FEBRUARY 11, 2020 GUINNESS OPEN GATE BREWERY EVENING SCHEDULE 5:00 – 6:00 COCKTAILS 6:00 – 9:00 AWARDS / DINNER ABOUT THE TROPHIES When the best of Maryland racing and breeding is celebrated this evening at the third annual Renaissance Awards, the recipients will be handed a trophy – a striking bronze of an exquisite Thoroughbred head – specifically created by artist Peggy Kauffman. Kauffman (left), an accomplished horsewoman, has been a portrait artist of more than 30 years who works in bronze sculpture and pastel painting. In addition to her portraiture, she has created trophies that are presented at Fair Hill Races, and for horse show events in New York. MHBA Executive Director Cricket Goodall had seen the work of Kauffman on display at a benefit and reached out to her about creating a Renaissance Awards trophy. 1 The bronze is approximately 11 inches long, 3 ⁄2 inches wide and 1 8 ⁄2 inches high, though a 2-inch base adds to its height. Kauffman has her bronzes cast at New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, which uses the lost wax casing process. It can take months from the time a piece of art in its clay form arrives at the foundry until the bronze is finished. Design and size are among the factors. Kauffman, who made the six-hour trip to Baltimore from her home in Millerton, N.Y., to oversee much of the process, launched her career as an artist by first going to art school in New York before taking courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art, but noted her main education was “when I worked and rode for a (show) horse dealer in New York state for years.” She had competed professionally with show and event horses.

  • Maryland Lawmakers Have an Ambitious Plan to Renovate Pimlico and Laurel Racecourses
MARYLAND LAWMAKERS HAVE AN AMBITIOUS PLAN TO RENOVATE PIMLICO AND LAUREL RACECOURSES By Pamela Wood: Baltimore Sun: Feb. 25,th, 2020: 5:59pm Maryland lawmakers are considering a $375 million plan to renovate Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore and Laurel Park in Anne Arundel County. This rendering shows what the Preakness Stakes race might look like at a renovated Pimlico. Maryland lawmakers are considering an ambitious $389 million plan to renovate Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park, two historic horse racing tracks. Here are key elements of the plan. Two tracks would be overhauled Laurel would be renovated first, and would continue to be the focus of year-round thoroughbred horse racing in Maryland. It would get new track surfaces, a new clubhouse, improved stables and better housing for track workers. While Laurel is renovated from 2021 to 2023, all racing would be held at Pimlico in Baltimore. Then Pimlico would get an overhaul in 2023 and 2024. And instead of a racing-focused facility, Pimlico would be renovated into a multiuse facility that would be used most of the year for youth sports events, festivals and the like. Each spring, the Maryland Jockey Club would use Pimlico to run a short racing meet with the Preakness Stakes as the centerpiece. The Maryland Jockey Club would build temporary seating and tents each year to accommodate the large Preakness crowd. The first Preakness at the rebuilt Pimlico would be held in May 2024. The Stronach Group, which owns the jockey club and the tracks, would give up ownership of Pimlico by turning it over to Baltimore City or an entity designated by the city.

mpi sc szn-i-iHi MARYLAND HISTORICAL MAGAZINE VOL. XXXVI DECEMBER, 1941 No. 4 JOSHUA BARNEY AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION By BERNARD MAYO When William Wirt was writing his biography of Patrick Henry and having difficulty in finding material on his subject, St. George Tucker commiserated with him on the indifference of Virginians to their great men. It seemed to Tucker that even Socrates would have been soon forgotten in the Ancient Dominion.1 This same sort of indifference has obscured the merits of a num- ber of Maryland's distinguished sons, and among them until recently has been Joshua Barney of Baltimore. To most Americans his name, if it meant anything at all, vaguely recalled the gallant defense of Washington in 1814 made by Barney's marines and flotilla-men at William Wirt's home town of Bladensburg. Yet this was but one of the Marylander's many exploits and public services. Happily he has now been rescued from an undeserved obscurity by Mr. Hulbert Footner's robust and stirring biography. Sailor of Fortune: The Life and Adventures of Commodore Barney, U. S. N.2 It is not the purpose here to recount what Mr. Footner has already told, but rather to throw a little additional light on one phase of Joshua Barney's career. In editing for the American Historical Association a volume comprising the instructions sent by the British foreign secretaries to Britain's envoys in America from 1791 to 1812, several items have been discovered which are pertinent to the man. The Foreign Office archives reveal that 1St.

  • Creating Opportunity in Northwest Baltimore Northwest Baltimore Faces a Pivotal Moment for Its Future
Creating Opportunity in Northwest Baltimore Northwest Baltimore faces a pivotal moment for its future. The General Assembly is considering legislation that promises to bring a renaissance of economic opportunities and resources to the NW community. The legislative plan to redevelop Pimlico Race Course ensures the historic Preakness Stakes stays in Baltimore, offers a clear vision for horse racing’s future in Maryland, and creates the kind of momentum that is critical for redeveloping and strengthening Central Park Heights and beyond. The redevelopment of the Pimlico site is an extraordinary job-creating opportunity during construction and the many years that follow. What is Senate Bill 987/ House Bill 1056 (SB987/HB1056) – Racing and Community Development Act of 2020 (Senator Guzzone and Speaker Jones)? The plan – carefully negotiated by city leaders, the owners of the Maryland Jockey Club, and horse racing industry stakeholders – lays out a vision for a redesigned and rebuilt track that offers modernized facilities for the Preakness, as well as ways to use the property year-round — athletic fields in the infield; spaces for community meetings, arts festivals, concerts and banquets; and parcels for mixed-use commercial, retail and residential development, such as a supermarket, family and senior housing, office space and more. The plan would also provide for a new clubhouse, training facilities, stables and housing for track workers at Laurel Park, and donate the Bowie Training Center to government and education entities for primarily recreational uses. Why is SB987/HB1056 Good for Maryland and the Jewish Community? The Jewish community has long believed that Pimlico and the Preakness play critical roles in the economic vitality of both the nearby neighborhoods of Northwest Baltimore and greater Baltimore City.
