It is the oldest of the European political institutions and has forty-three member states,1 including the fifteen members of the European Union. It is the widest intergovernmental and inter-parliamentary grouping in Europe, and has its headquarters in the French city of Strasbourg. Only questions related to national defence are excluded from the Council of Europe's work, and the Organisation has activities in the following areas: democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms; media and communication; social and economic affairs; education, culture, heritage and sport; youth; health; environment and regional planning; local democracy and legal co-operation. The European Cultural Convention was opened for signature in 1954. This international treaty is also open to European countries that are not members of the Council of Europe, enabling them to take part in the Organisation's Programmes on education, culture, sport and youth. So far, forty-seven states have acceded to the European Cultural Convention: the Council of Europe's forty-three member states plus Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Holy See and Monaco. The Council for Cultural Co-operation (the CDCC) is responsible for the Council of Europe's work on education and culture. Four specialised committees - the Education Committee, the Higher Education and Research Committee, the Culture Committee and the Cultural Heritage Committee - help the CDCC to carry out its tasks under the European Cultural Convention. -

The Los Angeles Times April 30, 1995 Travel Section Destination: Amsterdam By Daniel Akst Fifty years after her death in a Nazi camp, diarist Anne Frank's 'Secret Annex ' still haunts its many visitors AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — You've read the book. Maybe you've even seen the movie. But nothing quite prepares you for your first glimpse of the bookcase. The bookcase, in Amsterdam, is the one that served to disguise the entrance to what Anne Frank called the "Secret Annex" deep within Prinsengracht 263, a four-story brick row house on a quiet canal in the heart of the city. It was in a cramped warren of half a dozen rooms behind this bookcase that Anne, her sister, her parents and four other Jews hid for more than two years in an ultimately futile attempt to escape the Nazis. Pass behind the bookcase--empty now, save for a few yellowing account books--and you pass into the eye of that long-ago storm. Here, young Anne maintained the chronicle that survived the Nazis to become one of the most remarkable--and widely read--literary documents of the 20th Century, the work officially known as "The Diary of a Young Girl." Last month, when I visited Amsterdam, was the 50th anniversary of Anne's death from typhus at age 15, in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The occasion has been marked in the United States by a significant literary event: publication of a newly translated expanded edition of Anne's diary. The original version--which sold more than 25 million copies in 55 languages and later became a Broadway play and popular film-- was edited by her father, Otto, the only survivor of the group that hid in the annex. -

Before my work, the figure of the child in the context of Holocaust representation had not been adequately researched at the academic level, despite its prominent presence in Holocaust representation since the immediate post-war years, starting with the popularity of Anne Frank’s diary. In order to adequately observe the child figure phenomenon, I investigate each medium of Holocaust representation and conduct close readings of popular or well-known representations using Hayden White’s concept of the middle voice and Alison Landsberg’s work in memory studies in order to illustrate how the child’s constructed innocence can impact a work.
