Austria: Judenburg The Pine Needle Project – Year 2013 (Baltic Sea Project / UNESCO) Like every year pine needle samples were collected from the polluted area in Pöls und from the unpolluted area Amering. These pine needle samples were send to Pori in Finland, where the total sulphur content was determined. The total sulphur quantity of the pine needles is generally used as an indicator when the sulphur deposition is studied. The deposition can be dry or wet. The dry deposition falls as gaseous sulphur dioxide (SO2) and wet as sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Because the wet deposition is acid, it influences the construction and action of the whole needle largely. We must remember that single values of total sulphur do not tell us everything. Winter temperatures, wind conditions, rainfall and other abiotic factors can cause significant variation between separate results. In addition, the state of a needle can be fairly different even in different sides and height of a tree. The sulphate ion is also a compound, which pines take from the soil, so not all of the total sulphur is due to deposition. It has been estimated that without human influence the total sulphur of pine needles in Northern Europe would be about 600 – 800 parts per million (ppm = mg/kg). This year we had no samples with that low value, but Austrian needles were quite good: Amering (Judenburg 1): 850 ppm; Pöls (Judenburg 2): 880 ppm. This year the most non-sulphuric areas were located in Austria, Sweden (Timra) and Finland (Pori). The highest values were found in Russia (Monchegorsk: 1650 ppm), Poland (Katowice: 1420 ppm) and Denmark (Sönderborg: 1290 ppm). Austria: Judenburg The clean sample is from Amering, which is a small place surrounded by hills and meadows in the altitude of 1160 meters. There is hardly any traffic, the air should be very clean. The polluted sample is collected from Pöls, which is situated nearby a big paper mill. In the year 2013 the mean value of sulphur has increased little (850 till 870 ppm). Together with the know-how partner "Bioenergie Wärmeservice Gmbh” from Köflach, an expert for district heating and waste heat recovery systems, a joint venture was formed into the company “Biowärme Aichfeld Gmbh”. The objective was to use the waste heat sensibly, in combination with an existing biomass heating plant and a storage solution with large-district- pressure reservoirs. The result allows for a sustainable, environmentally friendly and regional heat supply for more than 15,000 households in the greater Aichfeld area. For this purpose, the joint venture partners invested € 18 million and laid over 18 km of piping for the district heating project. This is a heat grid infrastructure project, to connect the cities, business and industrials parks in the region. The cities, business and industrial parks are served by ESCOS, which take over the heat from the infrastructure heat grid, and distribute the heat to the customers.     BOOSTEE-CE Newsletter BOOSTING ENERGY EFFICIENCY March 2018 IN CENTRAL EUROPEAN CITIES Issue #2 THROUGH SMART ENERGY MANAGEMENT STATUS AND RESULTS FIRST 3D BUILDING MODELS Work Package T1 is devoted to the creation of 3D building models of the pilot areas. These 3D geometries will be used to perform a comprehensive analysis and visualization of the energy audits, support the increase of energy efficiency in public buildings and improve quality of life in these respects. The generation of 3D geometries is based on geospatial data collected by project partners (building footprints, LiDAR point clouds, etc.), and state-of-the-art methods. These 3D models were created at sufficient levels of detail (LOD1) for the aims of BOOSTEE-CE. The first 3D building models were produced for the pilot areas of Velenje (Slovenia), Bologna (Italy), Koprivnica (Croatia), Judenburg (Austria) and Zlin (Czech Republic). ONLINE VIEWER To present the Pilot Actions of the BOOSTEE-CE project, an online viewer (Story Map) was realized with the pilot locations and information about the build-up areas. The viewer is useful to disseminate pilot information and it will be used to test the OnePlace platform.     Chapter One _________ A History of Model League of Nations in the United States The origin of intercollegiate simulations of international organizations in the United States can be traced back more than 90 years ago when Australian-born Professor Hessel Duncan Hall of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University organized a two-day Model Assembly of the League of Nations on April 29-30, 1927.1 According to Professor Hall, the simulation of the Assembly of the League of Nations was “the first time that a Model League Assembly, participated in by a number of universities, has been held in the United States.”2 The New York Times reported that the precedents of the 1927 Model Assembly of the League of Nations at Syracuse University were similar conferences held previously in Great Britain and Japan.3 According to one report, the Oxford University branch of the League of Nations Union (LNU) organized a “model assembly” of the League of Nations in 1921. Foreign students studying at Oxford University participated in the “model assembly” as representatives of some 34 countries, including Australia and India.4 Another report indicated that thirteen student branches of the Japanese League of Nations Association “conceived the idea of holding in Tokyo a public session of a Model League of Nations” in 1925.5 The purposes of the Model Assembly of the League of Nations held at Syracuse University in 1927 were to “enable American and foreign students in New York State to meet for a frank discussion of urgent problems of international relations” and to “give them an opportunity of seeing in action the most important organization for world cooperation ever established.”6 The League of Nations organization, the predecessor of the modern United Nations (U.N.) organization, was established by the allied powers at the end of the First World War.
