GTA TECH SESSION 1:2021 Herald 1147 Engine Reassembly By Jim Orr

On Saturday morning Jan 23rd, several had prepared, I learned that I could have GTA members were kind enough to brave done much better. the Covid-19 and help put my Herald engine back together. Many thanks for Next engine rebuild I’ll know better. I Mike Hurst , (AKA Mikie -our Membership learned right off the bat that I had much to coordinator and TECH Meistro), Neal learn. Turner, Jeff Smith and Ashford Little for giving up most of their Saturday to teach I had laid out all of the parts that I thought me how it’s done! we would need, like Crank, cam, bearings, engine assembly lube , pistons, rings etc. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time looking The engine block had been cleaned and for tools and supplies needed for the tech painted, and I had two complete gasket session – no matter how well I thought I sets in case we needed backups.

The day began with the inspection of the dislodge so that you can rebuild the Cam shaft. I opted for an uprated cam that engine all over again in short order. The should add 10 HP of raw power to the clip edge was inserted frst then the roughly 40 HP that the engine had when bearings were pressed by hand into new. I fgured 25% increase in power position until there was a light “click” would be noticeable, (I’ll let you know letting us know that they were home. about that later). We then installed the crank shaft after On frst glance it was thought that one heavily lubricating the upper bearing lobe was missing as there was a lobe that shells. was nearly gone. Once we looked at the old cam, we realized that lobe drove the Next, we proceeded to use Plasti-Gauge oil pump and all was well. This particular to check the rod bearing clearance. This is engine does not have cam Bearings – the achieved by placing a piece of Plasti- line bores where the cam rotates have Gauge onto the crank surface that will been hardened and the oil channels in the contact the bearing. The bearing cap is cam are designed to keep the area then installed and the rod bolts tightened lubricated, so inserting the cam was just a to spec torque, tightening them gradually matter of lubricating those contact and alternatively so that they will be evenly surfaces and feeding it through until the applied. The will be on either side of the bearing from each other , but on the same end.

Once torqued properly, the bearing caps are removed and the Plasti-gauge width is measured to determine if the clearance is within spec. Plasti-Gauge is a very thin piece of plastic that is mad to very exact tolerances. One measures the bearing Next we inserted the crank upper main clearance by measuring how wide the bearing shells into the three points in the squashed plastic becomes AFTER it is block that the crank shaft contacts while smashed to the proper torque. Our bearings were within spec, so we cleaned off the Plasti-Gauge residue, oiled up the lower main bearing caps and re- torqued them to spec. I DIDN’T KNOW that each piston had essentially 5 rings each, two compression Thrust washers were then installed and rings, two oil “scraper” rings, and an end play was checked to be sure that the expander ring that holds the two scraper movement of the crank was within proper rings apart while creating areas for oil to spec. Mike hurst made a contraption that would allow him to mark the timing gear at “0” when the piston was at top dead center. An engine timing degree wheel was used

Then came the balancing act installing the timing gear with chain in the proper position so that both crank and cam were in the correct orientation to each other. And fnally installation of the timing cover and timing chain tensioner took a few tries. I learned that a welding rod bent at 90 degrees or a length of fshing line would have been handy to withdraw the tensioner until the cover was in place, but we managed without either.

32 Volume 37, Issue 02 February 2021 Drive Your Triumph Day

Dear Fellow Triumph Owner,

One thing that has remained constant in this crazy pandemic year, is the pleasure to social distance by taking a drive in your Triumph. So, with that in mind, it’s time to plan a social distance activity for Drive Your Triumph Day, February 10, 2021.

My name is Rye Livingston and I'm with the Triumph Travelers Club in Northern California, which is celebrating our 62nd anniversary.

As you may remember a number of years ago, I encouraged members of our club to drive their Triumphs on February 10th, to celebrate Sir John Black's Birthday, the man who organized Standard's purchase of Triumph after the war, and went on to make the cars we enjoy driving today.

33 Volume 37, Issue 02 February 2021

Last year I received about 350 photos from all over the world: Scotland, Ireland, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Uruguay, Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, Canada, Holland, Czech Republic, and of course all over the USA. I’m hoping we can increase that number this year!

The concept is straightforward. On Wednesday, February 10th, go for a drive in your Triumph. Take a scenic drive on a country road or out to lunch, to the market, to work, wherever. Go for a drive alone or in a big group from your local Triumph Club. Take your spouse, buddy, child, grandchild or your dog; then take a photo. The photo is mainly of the car, and the owner if possible, ideally in front of a cool spot, landmark, scenic view or in your driveway. If it’s the middle of the winter where you live and your car is in hibernation, or in the middle of a restoration, take a photo of it anyway.

Next step is to email a high-resolution photo to [email protected], along with some basic information: owner’s name, year and model of car, and place photo was taken (city, state, country). The photos will then be published not only in our club newsletter, but also in USA’s national magazine: Vintage Triumph Registry, and on the Drive Your Triumph Day website: https://driveyourtriumphday.shutterfy.com

Please feel free to send this on to other Triumph Clubs you may know of, and your club Activities Chairman and Newsletter editor. Last year a few Standard Clubs joined in too, which is great.

Be sure to contact me with any questions you may have, and thank you in advance for getting the message out to your members and friends to Drive Their Triumphs on February 10th.

Regards, Rye Livingston Activities Chairman Triumph Travelers Sports Car Club Celebrating our 62nd Anniversary 1960 Triumph TR3A

2021 6-Pack TRials 2020 TRials Richmond, VA

SEP 30, 2021 AT 4 PM – OCT 3, 2021 AT 12 PM

Like all of you, we have been following the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the country. While it is reasonable to expect the country will be "open" come this fall, we don't think it is prudent for the club to assume the additional liability involved with a large gathering of individuals until we are certain there is a vaccine or at least a treatment. Therefore, TRials 2020 is delayed until September 30 - Oct 3, 2021. For those that have made hotel reservations, please handle your own cancellations. We will return deposit checks to those that have already sent them in. Once we have the new dates contracted we will update the website and Facebook page.

41 Volume 37, Issue 02 February 2021 like mad. I ordered a complete new wiring harness(s) from Rimmer Brothers. I had the mechanic come out to do the rewiring. We cut the old wiring harness out, and once he started to feed the new harness through the fre wall, he stopped, and told me that I had ordered the harness for a RHD, instead if for a LHD. The car has been garage kept since I have owned it.

Due to caring for elderly parents, the "back-burner project" kept getting pushed back farther and farther. So, I have reached a point where I would like to fnd "Lil' Red" a new home. I am asking $4500.00 , but would consider reasonable offers.

I can be reached at 678-266-7176 or at [email protected] .
