  • Bryan Batt Talks Show Business
Tulane University Bryan Batt talks show business October 12, 2018 8:30 AM Tulane Today staff [email protected] Tulane alumnus Bryan Batt has made a name for himself in Hollywood. (Photo by Paula Burch- Celentano) ALONG FOR THE RIDE Actor Bryan Batt (A&S ’85) knows that a career in show business can have as many twists and turns as a carnival ride. “My career and life have been like a roller coaster, but considering my family, that’s just perfect, and I love it!,” said the native New Orleanian, whose inherent sunny outlook and fondness for thrills is heavily influenced by his childhood spent at Pontchartrain Beach, the iconic local amusement park owned and operated by his family from 1928 through 1983. “My maternal grandmother, Hazel, was a well-known dance teacher in New Orleans, and my paternal grandfather, Harry Batt Sr., founded Pontchartrain Beach. Somewhere down the line, I developed this same affinity for entertainment,” said Batt. After graduating from Tulane in 1985 with a bachelor of arts degree in theatre, Batt brought Big Easy charm to New York stages. Batt landed leading and principal roles in beloved Broadway standards like Sunset Boulevard, Cats and Beauty and the Beast. Tulane University | New Orleans | 504-865-5210 | [email protected] Tulane University He next plans to work on staging Dear Mr. Williams, a show that he wrote exclusively for the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival. Batt has also appeared on both the small screen and silver screen. His portrayal of Salvatore Romano on AMC’s lauded drama series “Mad Men” earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

  • Uses and Gratifications Within AMC's Mad
Uses and Gratifications within AMC’s Mad Men Arcadia University: Media & Communication Bryce Wadsworth Intro: In today’s society, we are consumers of all sorts of media- whether that be by reading books, watching a TV show or a movie, or even exploring social media sites. Media has become a part of our everyday lives, in both social and professional respects. The ways viewers use media to gratify desires has shown to be telling of an audience (even down to the individual viewer) and influence the way we live our lives. So, without a doubt, media platforms serve a purpose in the world, but we seldom question why and how we consume particular pieces of entertainment media, despite their relevance and importance in our lives. Theory Explanation: (U&G) Elihu Katz’s theory of ‘Uses and Gratifications’ is generally defined as ‘the practice of people using the media to their own advantage’. In other words, the viewers and consumers of media are actively picking what they view and choosing how to view it, despite other theories that describe media viewers as passive beings with no control over what they are exposed to. In Media Studies 101, a Creative Commons Textbook, U&G is explained as a behavior and display of power rather than a controlled happening within media studies. Which then implies that viewers make decisions and responses in order to find what best suits their personal needs and interests. This developing concept began to evolve as Herta Herzog started looking at the emotional needs of a viewer in 1944.

  • Gendered Identity and Fantasy in Mad Men
PREVIOUSLY ON “You gotta let them know what kind of guy you are, then they’ll know what kind of girl to be”: Gendered Identity and Fantasy in Mad Men Sarah French Matthew Weiner’s television series Mad Men (2007-) provides a contemporary critique of the gender politics of 1960s middle-class America. Focusing on the theme of fantasy, this chapter argues that the series reveals femininity and masculinity to be highly constructed, performative and mimetic categories that adhere to the coordinates of patriarchal fantasy. The characters’ constructions of gendered identity are situated within a rigid patriarchal ideological framework that imposes severe limitations upon their subjectivities, as a result of which each of the protagonists are shown to be inherently damaged, unstable or lacking in agency. The role of fantasy is ultimately to conceal and overcome this inherent instability through the construction of stable yet fantasmatic identities. In the title sequence that opens each episode of Mad Men a series of visual motifs are used to express this central theme of fantasy. The sequence depicts a silhouetted man who stands in for the series’ protagonist Don Draper (Jon Hamm). As he enters his corporate office, the objects and furniture lose their solidity and begin to fall through the floor. The office itself then disappears and the silhouetted man falls with the other objects towards the ground, passing the skyscrapers with their billboard advertisements of wholesome family life and sexually objectified women. The advertisements appear as mimetic fragments, simulacra of a life-world constructed on ideological fantasies. The falling objects and silhouette point to the illusory and impermanent nature of the world of Mad Men and Don Draper’s similarly illusory role within this world.

  • Reminder List of Productions Eligible for Awards
REMINDER LIST OF PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS All films that have qualified for consideration for 2009 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch mem - bers filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for . For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. Foreign Language films are eligible for awards in other categories provided they meet the requirements of Awards Rules Two and Three. Notes A ADAM Hugh Dancy. Rose Byrne. Frankie Faison.
