The most significant result of these developments was a revival of democratic optimism, not only across the African continent but also around the world. One of the areas where the democratic changes have spawned visible changes has been in the media landscape. There has been an unprecedented increase in the number, type and diversity of mass media on the continent.1 The last decade has seen the emergence of various private newspapers and radio stations which offer alternative views on issues, even though some countries, such as Zimbabwe, refuse to ease state control of the electronic media. In Ghana, for example, there has been an increase in private radio and television stations from zero each in 1993 to 13 and two respectively, in 1999. -

Joy: A Stubborn Promise Isaiah 35:1-10 Rev. Dr. Benjamin J. Broadbent The Community Church of Sebastopol United Church of Christ 3rd Sunday in Advent – December 11, 2016 I. Why is it that joy, our theme for this third Sunday in the season of Advent, is so hard to come by? When I say “joy is hard to come by,” I mean the kind of joy that can’t be faked or fabricated. That kind of joy is organic and overwhelming and – can I say this in a sermon? – sometimes even orgasmic. (I guess I just did.) Joy in the Christian tradition is not just another word for happiness or contentment. Joy is a full body, full mind, full heart, full soul state of being. And joy in the Bible is never simply an individual’s experience. It is always related to the well-being of the larger community of people. Even Mary’s song found in the first chapter of Luke isn’t just the song of young woman who finds herself to be unexpectedly pregnant. Mary’s Magnificat was first sung generations before Mary by women like Hannah. It was a song passed down through a community of women spanning centuries. When Mary sings it, she does so in community with her relative Elizabeth. This is not the song of an individual’s private joy, but the song of expectant women overwhelmed by the promise of new life. And the content of Mary’s song addresses the well-being of the wider community. More specifically, her song introduces a series of reversals: • instead of rewarding those who are shrewd and conniving, God scatters them; • those who sit in board rooms at the top of their towers are forced onto the street so that those with no power can move on up; • those who starve in a besieged city are treated to a banquet of fresh and sustainably produced food, while those who’ve never known hunger are forced to fast awhile. -

An Interdisciplinary Conference June 2 – 3, 2020 Minneapolis, MN Conference Presenters and Abstracts Hosted by The School of Arts and Media, University of Salford, UK Organized by Dr. Kirsty Fairclough, School of Arts and Media, University of Salford Kristen Zschomler, Minneapolis-based historian and writer, Sound History, LLC Chris Aguilar-Garcia Independent Scholar, USA Dirty Mind and Controversy: Creating a Queer Icon Sex and sexuality were key elements of the Prince persona and catalog from the release of his debut album and first single, “Soft and Wet.” While his early releases were essentially heteronormative and barely transgressive, particularly at the tail end of the sexually liberated disco era, in 1980’s “Dirty Mind,” we see the beginnings of a queer sensibility. Beyond what critic Ken Tucker termed a “liberating lewdness” in his Rolling Stone review, the album also included Prince’s first songs of outright social commentary with “Uptown,” and “Partyup.” In “Uptown,” Prince is pegged as gay because of his clothes and hair, and in “Partyup,” the 30- minute album closes out to the defiant chant “You’re gonna have to fight your own damn war / ‘Cause we don’t wanna fight no more!” A year later, in the title track to 1981’s Controversy, Prince ponders, “Am I straight or gay?,” a bold question at a time fellow Queer icons Elton John and Freddie Mercury were not publicly out. In “Sexuality,” Prince goes on to proclaim the Second Coming not as the return of Christ, but the dawn of an “anything goes” sexual revolution free of segregation. Within the framework of these two definitive albums, Prince solidly planted himself in the pantheon of Queer icons, laying the groundwork for a blockbuster career that relentlessly defied social and industry norms. -

This piece was first published within those looser strictures and efforts have been made to identity quoted sources. It's the tally of "my lusts and my little ideas," wrote nineteen-year-old Sylvia Plath in her journals, where she confessed her thoughts, her "test tube infatuations," her story notes, her cake baking, her jealousies, her dreams and her fears from the age of twelve until days before her death by her own hand at the age of 30 (103, 144). Not merely coy in retrospect, Plath's characterization of her journal stands in stunning contrast to the monumentally revealing document that she created. Her journals amount to more than a thousand pages scattered through various handwritten notebooks, diaries, fragments, and typed sheets, the sum of it an extraordinary record of what she called the "forging of a soul," the creation of a writer and a woman whose many veils and guises have succeeded in forestalling anyone from knowing who she really was, despite her lifelong frenetic, fanatical quest to discover the answer for herself (230). "You walked in, laughing, tears, welling confused, mingling in your throat. How can you be so many women to so many people, oh you strange girl?" (137). Plath asked herself in the summer of 1952 when she was about to enter her junior year at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. -
