Thus my being asked to become the chair of the Committee at this year’s AGM was, from my perspective, rather rapid promotion! Now I have been given the great honour of writing this foreword to the Friends’ latest publication, a survey and guide to sources of information on every aspect of life in Highland Perthshire as encapsulated in the collections of the Archive. In it you will find a comprehensive overview of the huge range of collections relevant to this topic including history, genealogy, industry, settlements, estates and anything else you may be interested in. Some of the material is “official”, like local authority documents, police and Justice of the Peace records. However, there is also guidance on exploring community-based collections put together by local people who were determined their “story” would live on and be accessible to anyone who was interested. There are also many illustrations of documents of different types with informative notes beside each one. These are, of course, merely a glimpse of the rich and varied sources which exist and can be explored with the help of the staff of the Archive. A feature which we hope will be seen as innovative, and was the brainchild of the authors, is a specimen analysis of a document which is designed to show you what you can learn from it whether you are a family, house or local historian, or just interested in maximising the information that a document can provide.

    RURAL ECOMOMY AND CONNECTIVTY COMMITTEE DRAFT BUDGET 2017-18; BROADBAND SUBMISSION FROM COLIN ROSS This submission describes: • practical effects of poor connectivity on local people, businesses and visitors • exclusion of families, keen to live here, from activities taken to be normal elsewhere • loss of productivity for small businesses and the tourism industry • political and organisational failure to deliver a proven technical solution in the area • inhibition on real progress caused by contractual arrangements with BT • broadband as a key element in a sustainable future for rural communities I write as Chair of Blair Atholl and Struan Community Council. Our community sits at the geometric centre of Scotland, astride one of Scotland’s principal road and rail arteries, yet many of us receive broadband signal strengths that, at often less than 0.5Mbps, are totally inadequate to meet either the demands of external information sources or our reasonable expectations to communicate effectively. We are part of a major tourist area with attractions as diverse as Blair Castle and the House of Bruar yet visitors must lose their accustomed connectivity as the price of their stay with us and the hotels and boarding houses they wish to stay in struggle to present the fast, comprehensive on- line offer that is expected.. It is not possible to open or interact with some websites, downloading large documents is absurdly time consuming (and, therefore, costly for business) and data streaming belongs in dreamland. Simple tasks such as upgrading the operating system of a mobile phone can require a ninety mile round trip to Perth. New small businesses do start up here, as a welcome counterweight to relentless population decline.

BACKGROUND 2.1 ‘Following the Public Pound’ means ensuring that there is proper accountability for public funds used in delivering services and providing social benefits, irrespective of the means of delivering them. 2.2 Each Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that there is clear public accountability for public funds which are provided from their Service budgets to outside organisations. 2.3 In common with other local authorities, the Council uses a number of external organisations to assist in the provision of its services. These external organisations include both private and voluntary sector providers. 2.4 Many of these arrangements are established through a commercial tendering process which results in formal contracts. The Council also enters into partnerships with service providers, particularly in the voluntary sector, and manages these through Service Level Agreements. 2.5 The Council developed a code of guidance based on the Code of Guidance on Funding External Bodies and Following the Public Pound issued by the Accounts Commission in co-operation with COSLA.

In Alyth there will be 9 artists exhibiting at three locations. All venues are open 10-5pm every day. Venue 9 and 10 at 3 Hazel Court: Lesley Garside has been working with glass for over 25 years. She produces both decorative and functional fused and stained glass pieces from her Alyth workshop using several traditional techniques but with a contemporary twist: nature inspires much of her work. Jonathan Mitchell, who is a graduate of Duncan and Jordanstone, paints beautiful scenes of rural and urban Scotland. Kerstin Robb works mainly with liquid clay. Her work is inspired by nature. She has a new collection for 2017. Liz Watson, who is also a graduate of Duncan and Jordanstone uses light tone and colour in her work. She paints coastal subject, cats, still lifes and semi abstracts. Venue 11 at The Willow House, 6 St. Andrew Street: Maria Nordgren makes unique, functional pottery, thrown or hand built in porcelain and stoneware. Rachel Bower is a willow weaver producing baskets with a contemporary edge. Rachel and Maria also create collaborative pieces, combining potter and basketry. There will be willow weaving and clay throwing demonstrations during the week, and raku firings at the weekend. Venue 12 at Norwood, Losset Road. Jane Wilkinson of Special Branch baskets takes a unique look at a traditional craft, making coracles, baskets and fences from willow.

    ROBERTSON OF STRUAN CONAN OF GLENEROCHIE, was a younger son of Henry, Earl of Atholl, and to whom his father assigned the lands of Glenerochie. He made a grant of the woods of these lands to the monks at Coupar Angus in around 1240x45, in which charter he is styled “Conan son of Henry, Earl of Atholl,”1 and granted the dead wood of his lands of Tulyhen to the Abbey of Lindores in 1240x1245.2 He was father of : 1. Ewen of Glenerochie, (see below). 2. A daughter who m. Hath, son of Gilbrid. He is styled “genero” to Conan when witness to a charter by Conan to the Abbey of Lindores.3 EWEN OF GLENEROCHIE, styled as son of Conan when witness to a charter by his father to the Abbey of Lindores in around 1240x1245.4 He granted his lands of Calziebrochan to the Monks of Coupar Angus Abbey in 1282 to be held by them of Ewan and his daughters and their respective husbands as superiors. He m. Muriel, daughter of Conghal, grandson of Malise, Steward of Strathearn, and d. without male issue prior to 1284. Although his daughters were his heirs in certain parts of his lands such as those of Calziebrochan, he was ultimately succeeded in his lands of Glenerochie by the Robertsons of Struan as heirs male. ANDREW DE ATHOLIA, OF GLENEROCHIE, is the first ancestor of the Clan Donnachaidh for whom there is positive proof. He is styled as father to Duncan de Atholia and grandfather to Robert de Atholia in several documents executed in the first half of the 14th century.
