It is with great pleasure and excitement that I begin my term as the new president of the Society. It is a tall order to ftll the shoes of the past presidents of the Society, but with your help, I hope that we can continue to make the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society successful, fun, and educational. The President's Page, which will be a regular feat ure in The Longhunter, is my voice in providing addi tional information about the Society to all members. It is my hope that you enjoy the President's Page and that you will share your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and comments with me so that I may serve you and the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society more effectively.

Many of you attended the January program presented by Cheryl Denney. The portion of her program on newspaper preservation guidelines sparked an interesting discussion. I felt that the basic guidelines for preservation for newspapers printed on wood pulp would be worth sharing. A newspaper determined to be more that 10 years old should be immersed in distilled water for about 20 minutes. After drying thoroughly, spray the newspaper with acid-free spray. A newspaper less than 10 years old needs to be sprayed only, not immersed. If there is any doubt about the age of the newspaper or the wood pulp that was used to print it, immerse the newspaper in distilled water. Basically, immersing a newspaper in distilled water will not damage it, regardless of the age. Remember to try this process on a practice newspaper first and to use latex free gloves to handle the newspapers. Most newspapers printed up to about 1875 were printed on rag linen, not wood pulp. Ra g linen does not contain acid and does not need to have the acid removed from it. T he followin g are some interesting and informati ve web sites on newspaper preserva tion:

The best way to verify a source is to go to the original document, but some documents can be conveniently viewed online. Heritage Quest has digital images of the original United States census records ava ilable online for viewing, printing, or downloading in Adobe Acrobat format. T he Kentucky Histori cal Society offers access to this service as a benefit of membership. Along wi th this service, the Kentucky Historical Society offers many other benefits including online access to the Sanborn fire maps of Kentucky; a subscription to two quarterly newsletters; invitations to members-only events, exhi bit openings, and programs; and discounts on a variety of events, acti vi ties, and publications. I am personally pleased with the benefits of my membership and take pride in being a part of the Kentucky Historical Society. In this issue of The Lo1lghu1Iter, please pay special attention to the new scavenger hunt game. This should be fun , educational, and should help to encourage use of the Kentucky Library loca.ll y. Also, please consider attending SKY GEN 2004. This is a great opportunity to learn from Chuck Knuthsom, a nationally known professional. It should be a day which will motiva te us to try new things and allow li S to share ollr experiences with others who have common interests.

Mortality schedules were taken in conjunction with the population schedules for the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census in Kentucky. They reported the names of persons who died during the twelve months preceding June 1 of the census year. The Bowling Green Family History Center has all Kentucky mortality schedules in its collection.

The Last of Liquor in Logan County, 1888.

From the Russellville H earld, Russellville, Kentucky, 22 February 1888.

Gran Clark's saloon license expired Wednesday night at twelve o'clock, and with them the sale of liquor under the law in Logan County ceased. D. S. Rickets, who recently died, had license until March, but the court is of the opinion that whisky be cannot be retailed by Rickel's administrator under his license. Logan is now a prohibition county, and the old lopers will have to depend on the drugstores and jugs for their liquor. Prohibition is yet an experiment in this county, and it remains to be seen whether or not the law will be enforced so as to make it effective or throw all the profits of the trade into the pockets of a few individuals. Patricia Reid kept a card file, arranged alphabetically, with families that had been listed in the 1850 Simpson County, Kentucky census. She added to these cards information obtained from other sources. Even though the sources were not listed on the cards, the information may serve as a valuable clue to additional research avenues for people working on these families.
