An evidentiary hearing on the motion was held on May 21, 2012. The vehicle which defendant Campbell was driving was stopped for speeding on Interstate 26 in Washington County, Tennessee at approximately 12:24 p.m., on December 8, 2011, by Trooper William Shelton of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. This was not a pretextual traffic stop, but was based solely upon the fact that Trooper Shelton ascertained by his radar that the defendant’s vehicle was driving in excess of the posted speed. Defendant does not argue otherwise. However, defendant asserts that the traffic stop was unreasonable in scope and thus violative of the 4th Amendment. He argues that the original purpose of the traffic stop was satisfied, and that defendant was unlawfully detained without Trooper Shelton having “obtained additional information amounting to reasonable suspicion to believe that criminal activity [was] afoot.” The Court has reviewed the video recording taken by the camera in Trooper Shelton’s cruiser.     NOWLIN, JOHN W., Ph.D. The Geography of Wine in North Carolina: Terroir, Site Selection Efficacy, and Implications for Pierce’s Disease Resistant Grape Varieties in the Southeastern U.S. (2017) Directed by Dr. Rick Bunch 138 pp. North Carolina has a broad range of physical environments that produce wine from a breadth of grape species/varietals. Its wine industry has grown rapidly for over a decade and the nature of its climates, soils, and topography are varied and unique in the wine world, yet North Carolina remains relatively unknown outside of the Southeastern portion of the United States. In this study, North Carolina’s vineyards and their specific site characteristics were considered both on the basis of their terroir and the extent to which they followed extension agency advice on site selection. One characteristic risk of growing grapes in the Southeastern U.S. is a plant illness known as Pierce's Disease, which is deadly to the vines of Vitis vinifera parentage. This research used a novel method to reveal the dividing line between V. vinifera and Pierce’s Disease resistant grape variety suitability zones across the Southeast. The quantification of the physical elements of terroir and test of the effectiveness of vineyard site selection has revealed the character of North Carolina’s wine regions and commercial vineyards.     Rough in the Bunch: Appalachia's Rayon Girls Fight for the Right to Strike Emma Grace Thompson Senior Division Individual Documentary 1 I first learned about the rayon girls through an Appalachian History class. I chose this topic because it sparked my interest in relaying a narrative that transcends gender barriers and is both empowering and inspiring to anyone who feels like an underdog. My research included reviewing oral history accounts of the Bemberg and Glanzstoff plant employees at the University of North Carolina’s Oral Histories of the South archive. At the McClung Collection Archives, I found articles on the strike from local and statewide newspapers. The Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University and the Tennessee State Library and Archives allowed me to view photographs and video footage of the strike. Through the Library of Congress Digital Archives I found period correct videos of the rayon-making process along with footage of suffrage rallies and labor meetings. At the East Tennessee Historical Society I found primary and secondary sources on the history of women’s rights in Tennessee. I created my project in Final Cut Pro X using primary source photos and footage and a soundtrack of relevant music including a modern track that gave a succinct interpretation of the importance of the way the women dressed for the strike. I was able to create a narrative of modernity that this topic requires. My project relates to the NHD theme by identifying the right of the Elizabethton female textile workers—rayon girls—to strike. This right is juxtaposed with the responsibility of the textile mill owners to provide a safe work environment and to pay a fair wage.
