    Blackburn Cathedral The first verse of Once in Royal David’s City was sung, for the third year in succession, by Head Chorister William Fielding. He’s the best - for not only can he sing superbly, but he also plays the piano (lessons with Joy Fielding – no relation – and Martin Roscoe!), trumpet and cello, and he also plays the organ for his school assemblies and has begun to compose anthems in 9 vocal parts! Watch this young man – he will go far. December 2012 NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS by Candlelight BBC Radio Lancashire has been recording this service for exactly 40 years – and in charge of all those recordings was, and is, Gerald Jackson. Even though there were only 12 choristers (our 10 probationers would join the choir later) they made a wonderfully confident sound, backed by 18 choirmen, conducted, as ever so splendidly, by Samuel Hudson and accompanied, equally ‘as ever so splendidly’ by Shaun Turnbull. Deputy Head Chorister Harvey Finney set a high standard for reading of the lessons by his confident recounting of the story of Adam and Eve and the serpent!     Dear Friends, “Like the sun in the morning sky, the Saviour of the world will dawn. Like rain upon the meadows the Christ will come down upon us.” 2020 has been the hardest year many of us have ever experienced and as it draws to its close we still find ourselves living with anxiety and with difficult personal decisions. The strange and qualified relaxation of regulations over Christmas will have left many of you with challenging ethical decisions of what to do over Christmas, and this of course comes on top of the endless altering of arrangements you have had to make for Christmas worship, something which has not been helped by regulations being inconsistently applied in different parts of the county. But then of course it was in the midst of chaos, confusion and political wavering that the Christ came to be born two thousand years ago. As Christians we find our security and our identity not in the contingencies of an ever-changing world, but in the God who comes to us as a child in order to set us free for all eternity. In this strangest of Christmases, when so many will be fearful, preach the hope of the Incarnation like never before; with confidence, with joy and with conviction. The deeper the darkness, the more brilliant will be the radiant glory of the sun of righteousness, Christ the Lord. As we come to the end of the year, we want to say a huge, gold-plated THANK YOU for all you have done to lead your churches and live the Gospel in the most testing of circumstances.

    LANCASHIRE: A CHRONOLOGY OF FLASH FLOODING Introduction The past focus on the history of flooding has been mainly with respect to flooding from the overflow of rivers and with respect to the peak level that these floods have achieved. The Chronology of British Hydrological Events provides a reasonably comprehensive record of such events throughout Great Britain. Over the last 60 years the river gauging network provides a detailed record of the occurrence of river flows and peak levels and flows are summaried in HiflowsUK. However there has been recent recognition that much flooding of property occurs from surface water flooding, often far from rivers. Locally intense rainfall causes severe flooding of property and land as water concentrates and finds pathways along roads and depressions in the landscape. In addition, intense rainfall can also cause rapid rise in level and discharge in rivers causing a danger to the public even though the associated peak level is not critical. In extreme cases rapid rise in river level may be manifested as a ‘wall of water’ with near instantaneous rise in level of a metre or more. Such events are usually convective and may be accompanied by destructive hail or cause severe erosion of hillsides and agricultural land. There have been no previous compilations of historical records of such ‘flash floods’or even of more recent occurrences. It is therefore difficult to judge whether a recent event is unusual or even unique in terms of the level reached at a particular location or more broadly of regional severity. This chronology of flash floods is provided in order to enable comparisons to be made between recent and historical floods, to judge rarity and from a practical point of view to assess the adequacy of urban drainage networks.
