Sun Emits an X-Class Flare On August 9, 2011 An X-class flare began at 3:48 AM EDT on August 9, 2011 and peaked at 4:05 AM. (Credit: NASA) ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2011) — Solar flares are giant explosions on the sun that send energy, light and high speed particles into space. These flares are often associated with solar magnetic storms known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The number of solar flares increases approximately every 11 years, and the sun is currently moving towards another solar maximum, likely in 2013. That means more flares will be coming, some small and some big enough to send their radiation all the way to Earth. The biggest flares are known as "X-class flares" based on a classification system that divides solar flares according to their strength. The smallest ones are A-class (near background levels), followed by B, C, M and X. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a 10-fold increase in energy output. So an X is ten times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class there is a finer scale from 1 to 9. C-class and smaller flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts. And then come the X-class flares. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go higher than 9. The most powerful flare measured with modern methods was in 2003, during the last solar maximum, and it was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. The sensors cut out at X28. The biggest X-class flares are by far the largest explosions in the solar system and are awesome to watch. Loops tens of times the size of Earth leap up off the sun's surface when the sun's magnetic fields cross over each other and reconnect. In the biggest events, this reconnection process can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs. If they're directed at Earth, such flares and associated CMEs can create long lasting radiation storms that can harm satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies and power grids. X-class flares on December 5 and December 6, 2006, for example, triggered a CME that interfered with GPS signals being sent to ground-based receivers. 3 Infoteca’s E-Journal No. 167 September 2011 Sistema de Infotecas Centrales Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila NASA and NOAA -- as well as the US Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) and others -- keep a constant watch on the sun to monitor for X-class flares and their associated magnetic storms. With advance warning many satellites and spacecraft can be protected from the worst effects. On August 9, 2011 at 3:48 a.m. EDT, the sun emitted an Earth-directed X6.9 flare, as measured by the NOAA GOES satellite. These gigantic bursts of radiation cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to harm humans on the ground, however they can disrupt the atmosphere and disrupt GPS and communications signals. In this case, it appears the flare is strong enough to potentially cause some radio communication blackouts. It also produced increased solar energetic proton radiation -- enough to affect humans in space if they do not protect themselves. There was also a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with this flare. CMEs are another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth. However, this CME is not traveling toward and Earth so no Earth-bound effects are expected. Parts of the book relate to current controversies over standardized testing and the Advanced Placement Program. (Other parts are more focused on K-12.) Wainer is critical of the movement to make the SAT optional in college admissions, and argues that students who don't submit SAT scores perform worse in college than do those who submit the scores.

This price can be approached by either reducing the overall system cost or increasing system efficiency. The focus of this paper is on increasing both cell and module efficiency through application of nanotechnology and by numeral modeling. The first portion of this dissertation will focus on the production and characterization of zinc oxide urchin-like nanostructures. These nanostructures have a very high surface area to volume ratio. Such nanostructures could be appropriate for dye sensitized solar cells, an emergent PV technology. The second portion focuses on improving a solar module’s anti- reflective properties. In a traditional glass-encapsulated solar module at least 4% of the incoming light is lost to reflections off of the first optical interface alone. This in turn lower system efficiency and increases the levelized cost of energy. The power loss can be reduced greatly by thin film or gradient index anti-reflective coatings. An in-depth review of the current options for mathematical modeling of the optics of anti- reflective coatings is presented. The following chapter describes a numerical approach to anti-reflective interface design and a comparison between the finite- difference time-domain and the transfer matrix method of optical modeling.

Penumbra became the first four door solar car in the United States to compete in the World Solar Challenge. Before going to the World Solar Challenge, Penumbra and a large variety of team members traveled to every county in Iowa sharing our passions for sustainable energy sources Penumbra Unveiled and education. Shortly after, Penumbra made her way to the land down under. Penumbra was PrISUm’s first car to make it to Australia and compete in the cruiser class. Now looking forward to PrISUm’s upcoming year, the team has two priorities. Now that Penumbra is back, members of the mechanical and electrical teams are working towards prepping the car for Formula Sun Grand Prix and the American Solar Challenge in July. The team members who aren’t working on Penny (and even most of them who are) are looking towards the next cycle. That’s right! PrISUm has started design work for the 15th car. No details are being released on the 15th car at this moment, but the team has learned a lot of helpful knowledge both from Penumbra’s design and build process, but also by learning from industry partners and other competitors. Outreach PrISUm prides itself in doing meaningful outreach to everyone in our community: young, less young, student, life long learner, and anyone in between. While SunRun was a great way to reach out to hundreds of thousands of people, it’s not the only time to see the car and team out and about.

But not all sugars are bad for you. Consider fucose, an essential sugar the body needs. Without it, neurons can’t communicate, kidneys can’t filter blood, and skin can’t stay hydrated. Chemical biologist Carolyn • Bertozzi and her group are trying to learn more about the role of fucose in www.hhmi.org development. To do this, they injected modified versions of fucose into live, single-celled zebrafish embryos. As the embryos developed, the altered fucose molecules were incorporated into the sugars that coat cell surfaces. Using a simple chemical reaction, the team attached a labeled probe molecule to the altered fucose so they could visualize its location in the developing embryo.     Fifth-Year Assessment of Baylor University Major Strategic Proposal (MSP) “Research Initiative in Terrestrial Paleoclimatology”: Faculty and Student Research Accomplishments, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (partial) Executive Summary: The Terrestrial Paleoclimatology Research Initiative, an MSP initially funded by Baylor University beginning in 2007, that currently (October 29, 2012) consists of 6 Geology Faculty and one post-doc, has seen important growth and advancements of the initiative over the past 5 years, which are reported in detail in what follows. Especially noteworthy for this summary are the following: 1) Seven Ph.D. students (Drs. Ahr, Cleveland, Kahmann-Robinson, Mintz, Shunk, Stinchcomb, and Trendell) and two M.S. students (Bongino, Dhillon) have graduated, along with 12 B.S. Senior Thesis students. Three Ph.D. students (Jennings, Meier, and Michel) and two M.S. students (Culbertson and Felda) are anticipated to graduate in 2012-2013. There are currently 11 graduate students (3 M.S., 8 Ph.D.) and 4 B.S. students engaged in thesis research in the program. Three new graduate students (all Ph.D.) were recruited starting fall semester, 2012. 2) Faculty have published 97 total peer-reviewed journal articles (27 so far in 2012, 19 in 2011, 20 in 2010, 11 in 2009, 10 in 2008, and 10 in 2007), indicating a strong positive increase in research output. Of the peer-reviewed journal articles, 18 were first-authored by 7 Ph.D. students. Faculty and students gave 168 total presentations at professional meetings (24 in 2012 so far, 44 in 2011, 39 in 2010, 27 in 2009, 17 in 2008, and 17 in 2007), indicating a strong presence at professional presentations.

    Volume 10, Issue 2, Spring 2009 www.prisum.org Formula Sun Grand Prix 2009 Exciting news is abuzz around Team PrISUm’s facilities. After much budget forecasting and even more optimism and anticipation, the Iowa State solar car team is going to participate in For- mula Sun Grand Prix 2009! This event has historically been the qualifying event for the North American Solar Challenge (NASC) cross-country race, but has been split into its own event for the first time in history to allow for competition during off-race years. Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP) is held at the Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, TX. PrISUm’s Sol Invictus qualified on this same track for NASC ‘08 and performed well enough to be within one second of the fastest lap time, even after suffering multiple sys- tem shut downs during that lap! Our ninth car is especially well suited for track racing since it is the only four-wheel stance car competing and is much more stable when handling the twists and turns of the track. The end of the semester has proven to be a transition from designing P10 An aerial view of the track Sol (we don’t yet have a name for the new car, so we use P10) to preparing the team’s last car for its final race. We are all busy at work with finishing up school and making Sol Invictus ready. It takes a tremendous amount of work to get a car and team ready for a race, and we anticipate many nights without sleep in order to get the job done.

Although new standards emphasize critical reading and interpretation skills (CCSS, 2010; NGSS, 2013), students are rarely supported to learn from text in secondary classrooms (Greenleaf & Valencia, in press; Moje, Stockdill, Kim, & Kim, 2011). In science education, an emphasis on inquiry- and project-based learning tends to focus on building content knowledge with little attention to texts (Osborne, 2002). Research suggests teachers have little experience supporting text-based learning (Greenleaf et al., 2011). The purpose of this qualitative, comparative case study was to understand how teachers worked with texts in an AP Environmental Science course that had been redesigned to support text-based learning. This study was situated in a project-based learning approach developed to support students in under-resourced urban schools (Parker et al., 2011); previous findings indicated teachers in the course had previously worked around text with lectures and labs. In response, the course was redesigned with educative curriculum and aligned professional development.
