Many Stories, Many Lessons: The Plurality of Draupadi, Sita and Ahalya Benu Verma Assistant Professor, USHSS Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Dwarka, Delhi Abstract: The relationship between life and literature is a dialogic one. Life inspires literature and literature in turn influences life. Various genres in which literature is manifested reflect on the orientation, significance as well as the place of the text in its social environment. Mikhail Bakhtin proposes that genres dictate the reception of a text. Yet the same text could be interpreted differently in different times and contexts and be rewritten to reflect the aspirations of the author and her/his times. The many life stories of the feminine figures from the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata assert not only the inconclusive nature of myth and the potency of these epics, they also tell us that with changing political and social milieu the authors reinterpret and record anew given stories to contribute to the literature of their times. Draupadi as the epic heroine of Mahabharata has been written about popularly and widely and in each version with a new take on the major milestones of her life like her five husbands and her birth from fire. The motifs of her disrobing and her hair have been employed variedly to tell various stories, sometimes of oppression and at others of liberation, each belonging to a different time and space. Each story reflected the political stance and aspiration of its author and read by readers differently as per their times and contexts. Through an examination of various literary renditions of the feminine figures from the epics, like Draupadi, Sita, and Ahalya, this paper discusses the relationship between life and literature and how changing times call for changing forms of literature. -

The Aryans are the oldest race on earth and the most * advanced and the is their first ; Ramayana and grandest epic. The Eddas of Scandinavia, the Niebelungen Lied of Germany, the Iliad of Homer, the Enead of Virgil, the Inferno, the Purgatorio, and the Paradiso of Dante, the Paradise Lost of Milton, the Lusiad of Camcens, the Shah Nama of Firdausi are and no more the Epics ; Ramayana of Valmeeki is an Epic and much more. If any work can clam} to be the Bible of the Hindus, it is the Ramayana of Valmeeki. Professor MacDonell, the latest writer on Samskritha Literature, says : " The Epic contains the following verse foretelling its everlasting fame * As long as moynfain ranges stand And rivers flow upon the earth, So long will this Ramayana Survive upon the lips of men. This prophecy has been perhaps even more abundantly fulfilled than the well-known prediction of Horace. No pro- duct of Sanskrit Literature has enjoyed a greater popularity in India down to the present day than the Ramayana. Its story furnishes the subject of many other Sanskrit poems as well as plays and still delights, from the lips* of reciters, the hearts of the myriads of the Indian people, as at the 11 PREFACE great annual Rama-festival held at Benares. -

He sat there with his begging bowl in hand. Unlike most Sadhus, he had very high self- esteem. His eyes lit up when we bought him some ice-cream, he really enjoyed it. 38 Sand in Our Hands: The Little- known Stories of Vasai-Palghar Dr. Deepa Murdeshwar-Katre The word ‘indigenous’ originates in colonial references wherein the culture and literature of the colonizer was different from that of the native, and the literature of the latter came to be known as ‘indigenous’. It is the significant ‘Other’. Correspondingly, all literature in India as a colony of the British would have been considered ‘indigenous’. In the post- colonized scenario, the word indicates literature in English as against regional language literatures. It also refers to the ‘tribal’ as contrary to ‘urban’ or ‘mainstream’, which has been immensely influenced by the literature of the colonizers. However, in India, as Dr. G. N. Devy in the introduction to Painted Words: An Anthology of Tribal Literature states, “It is almost impossible to characterize all of India’s tribals in a single ethnographic or historic framework. In the Indian context, the term ‘tribal’ is too layered to be a synonym for ‘indigenous.” While most countries of the world have two types of literature, the ‘tribal’ and the ‘mainstream’, in India, there are broadly three types, viz., the ‘tribal’, ‘rural’ and ‘mainstream’ or ‘metropolitan’. Dr. Devy, in his observation on parampara in After Amnesia, broadly divides it into the “Marga - the metropolitan or mainstream tradition, and Desi - regional and subcultural traditions”(18). He thus includes the literature of the villages - the gramin (14) - in the second group - the important link between the two extremes of ‘tribal’ and ‘urban’. Many of the stories of these villages are intimately and intricately connected not only with the tribal but also mainstream literature of olden times. -

He says that Brahma, in the form of a boar caused the earth to rise from water and from Brahma is created the entire world. He recites the Genealogy of Rama's line. He informs that Aja and Suvrata were the two sons of Naabhaaga and it was Aja who begot the virtuous King Dasaratha; Rama's father. Vasishta also informs Rama that i the whole of Ikshvaku race, only the eldest son become the king. He requests Sri Rama not to violate this tradition and take over the reins of Ayodhya. Chapter [Sarga] 110 in Detail Recognizing that Rama has become angry, Vasistha spoke as follows: "Even Jabali is aware of the going and coming of this world." nivartayitu kaamah tu tvaam etad vaakyam abraviit | imaam loka samutpattim loka naatha nibodha me || 2-110-2 "He spoke in this manner, on account of his desire that you should return. O, Lord of the people! Learn from me of the creation of the world!" sarvam salilam eva aasiit prithivii yatra nirmitaa | tatah samabhavad brahmaa svayambhuur daivataih saha || 2-110-3 "All was water only in the beginning" from which element the earth was formed. After that, the self-existent Brahma with all the gods came into existence." sa varaahah tato bhuutvaa projjahaara vasumdharaam | asrijac ca jagat sarvam saha putraih krita aatmabhih || 2-110-4 "Thereafter, that Brahma, assuming the form of boar, caused the earth to rise from water and with his sons of pure soul, created the entire world."
