INRODUCTION As Brahma Maanasa Putras of Sanaka-Sanandana-Sanaatana-Sanat Kumaras were interrupted by Vaikuntha Dwaara Palakaas of Jaya Vijayas, the Kumaras cursed to be born in ten sucessive births of Evil Energies of the Time Cycle. Hence Maha Vishnu was necessitated to assume Ten ‘Avataaraas’ to vindicate Dharma and Nyaaya again and again. An ‘Avatara’ (Incarnation) is like the lighting of a lamp from another lamp; like-wise, Bhagavan is a manifestation suited to specific purpose and end-use. Among such Avatars of Vishnu, the first well-known manifestation of Matsya the Fish which retrieved the Sacred Vedas stolen from Brahma by Makarasura. The temptation to Danavas to obtain ‘Amrit’, ‘Samudra Mathana’was set as Manthara Mountain as the churning rod, Maha Sarpa Vasuki was the string with which to tie up the Mountain and Bhagavan himself as balancing Shakti as the Avatar of Kurma to ensure that the Meru Mountain would be made stable and steady. As Hiranyaakasha, the mighty son of Devi Diti pulled up Bhu Devi and dragged her into the depths of the Ocean down to the ‘atholokas’, Lord Vishnu assumed the incarnation of Maha Varaha and killed himas Devi Prithvi heaved a great sigh of relief. Hiranyakashipu got on to his wits’ end, when his own son Prahlada was forced to show that Narayana any where, say in a Pillar, he broke it with his mace and there emerged the fierce Man-Lion, Narasimha, who had half-body as a giant Lion roaring and killed the demon. Bhagavan agreed to be born to Aditi and Kashyapa as Vamana the foremost human as dwaf; grew up as a Brahmachari, learnt Vedas, sporting ‘Mriga Charma’, Danda and wooden footwear appeared at the Yagna by daanava Bali Chakravarti and asked for a charity of three feet of land.Vamana then assumed a sky body and measured one foot as Earth, Samudras, Parvatas; second foot as Sky, Nakshtras, Planets, Deva- Brahmaaadi lokas. Even as the second foot still fell short of the required size , Vaamana had to push Bali’s head down to ‘Rasatala’. As Manu prayed to Vishnu as his son, the Lord agreed for Preservation of Dharma and affirmed: Paritra naaya Sadhunaam Vinaasaaya cha Dushkrutaam, Dharma samsthaapanaarthaaya sambhavaami yuge yugey! (I shall no doubt take human birth to revive Dharma and punish Evil from time to time). As promised by Vishnu, Swayambhu was born as King Dasaratha and gave Shri Rama in Treta Yuga. Being a human, Rama was subject to the weaknesses of kama-krodha-mohas but being an ideal most specimen of humanity he was prone to cryings and wailings, bursts of anger and anguish, high possessiveness and frustrastion, passion and compassion. But, all rolled in yet covered by supreme and unique qualities of idealism, virtue and justice, devotion and veneration overshadowed by the single motivation of ‘Pitru Vaakya Paripalana’. All these traits were at display in the current series of Essence of Vaaklmiki Ramayana, especially in the instant Aranya Ramaayana, since the Baala and Ayodhya series had since seen attempted. As I approached with humility with a request to translate Ramayana, HH Vijayendra Saraswati of ‘Kanchi Peetha’ had spontaneously instructed : ‘ Try Vaalmiki Ramayana, but with vishleshanas’. It is that command which has generated ready inspiration and determination, quite apart from the innate power of the directive itself. For over a decade and half He has inspired me to take to translations of the essence of Ashtaadasha Puranas, Ashtaadasha Upanishads, Dharma Sindhu, Brahma Sutras, Manu Smriti, Soundarya Lahari, Bhagavad Gita, and scripts on Lakshmi-Sarasvati- Gayatri- Surya-Chandras etc. My earnest prostrations to Him by the self and family with all humility, faith and dedication. Introduction In Western civilization, the prefix ‘Ur’ is often used as metaphor to refer to a primitive, seminal, or prototypical example of an artistic representation, concept or idea. The associations of the word can be traced back to Sumerian sources and the origins of Indo- European civilization. Ur is considered by many to be the city of Ur-Kasdim mentioned in the Book of Genesis as the birthplace of the patriarch Abram (Abraham). The existence of cities can be traced back in antiquity to the important role of communities such as Memphis, Babylon, Thebes, Athens, Sparta, Mohenjodaro or Anuradhapura, among others. Rome was perhaps the first city to reach a population of one million around the time of Christ. Only in 1800 did London become the second city to reach this size. At that time only two percent of the world’s population was urbanized. Communities are not just defined in political and economic terms: cultural issues, perceptions, and foci contribute to give identity to the community, whether a village, a city, or a nation. Mirrors of cultural change, artistic representations offer insights into the way humans have transformed their living spaces. Works by artists, poets, novelists, visual artists, etc., helps unveil the distinctiveness in the way communities are viewed. The term mindscape, used to refer to human communities, refers to structures for thinking about human spaces built on conceptualisations of their physical landscape, whether urban or rural, and more recently virtual, as well as on their images as transported through cultural representation, memory, and imagination in different media formats.

    Many Stories, Many Lessons: The Plurality of Draupadi, Sita and Ahalya Benu Verma Assistant Professor, USHSS Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Dwarka, Delhi Abstract: The relationship between life and literature is a dialogic one. Life inspires literature and literature in turn influences life. Various genres in which literature is manifested reflect on the orientation, significance as well as the place of the text in its social environment. Mikhail Bakhtin proposes that genres dictate the reception of a text. Yet the same text could be interpreted differently in different times and contexts and be rewritten to reflect the aspirations of the author and her/his times. The many life stories of the feminine figures from the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata assert not only the inconclusive nature of myth and the potency of these epics, they also tell us that with changing political and social milieu the authors reinterpret and record anew given stories to contribute to the literature of their times. Draupadi as the epic heroine of Mahabharata has been written about popularly and widely and in each version with a new take on the major milestones of her life like her five husbands and her birth from fire. The motifs of her disrobing and her hair have been employed variedly to tell various stories, sometimes of oppression and at others of liberation, each belonging to a different time and space. Each story reflected the political stance and aspiration of its author and read by readers differently as per their times and contexts. Through an examination of various literary renditions of the feminine figures from the epics, like Draupadi, Sita, and Ahalya, this paper discusses the relationship between life and literature and how changing times call for changing forms of literature.

XVI (2014) 10.12797/CIS.16.2014.16.06 Shingo Einoo [email protected] (University of Tokyo) Vedic Predecessors of One Type of Tantric Ritual SUMMARY: Verses 9–16 of the Parātriṃśikā prescribe a ritual application of the hr̥ dayabīja mantra ‘sauḥ’. In this case the mantra ‘sauḥ’ has different effects according to durations of the mental recitation of it. This is a very simple example of one type of tantric ritual where a limited number of mantras of a certain deity are used in different ways to accomplish a variety of efficacy by changing ritual elements of them. In Hindu tantric texts we find more similar cases. In the newest layer of Vedic texts such as the Ṛgvidhāna, Sāmavidhāna Brāhmaṇa and the Atharvavedapariśiṣṭa there are some similar examples of this kind. The Taittirīyasaṃhitā describes in two succeeding chapters various applications of two mantras called rāṣṭrabhr̥ t and devikāhavis respectively. In this paper I examine more Vedic examples and elucidate the basic idea underlying this type of ritual. KEYWORDS: Vedic ritual, Tantric ritual, ritual application, ritual variation 1. Introduction 1-0 Both Vedic studies and Tantric studies have their own vast fields of research, namely the corpus of Vedic and Tantric texts. But by choosing some specific topics it may be possible to investigate Vedic and Tantric texts in some detail.
