This research work applies a composite indicator that has been developed as the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems Index to benchmark the performance of a new sample of 26 world cities. The sample advances the geographical diversity of previous samples and represents cities in the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy as well as the C40 initiative. The benchmarking results are analysed based on quartiles of city performance and Monte Carlo simulations. The results indicate the top three cities in the sample to be Copenhagen, which obtains a score of 36.038, followed by Helsinki and Gothenburg. -

AN ROMAN PERIOD SHIPWRECK WITH A CARGO OF AMPHORAE ROMaN PeRIOD ShIPWRecK IN The ČaVLIN ShaLLOWS There are several hundred Roman pe- riod shipwrecks in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, the majority of which are devastated, but about a dozen of which have survived the ravages of time and unethical looters. They have been preserved intact, or with only minor damage, which offers underwater archaeologists an oppor- tunity for complete research. The very large number of Roman ship- wrecks is not unexpected, but speaks rather of the intensity of trade and importance of navigation on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, and of the dangers our sea hides. Roman period shipwrecks can be dated either by the type of cargo they carried or by some further analysis (the age of the wood, for example), and the datings range from the 4th century BC to the 6th century. The cargos of these ships were varied: from fine pot- tery, vessels and plates, stone construction elements and brick to the most frequent cargo – amphorae. The amphora was used as packag- ing from the period of the Greece colonisation to the late Roman and the Byzantine supremacy. There are remains of shipwrecks with cargos of amphorae that can be researched on the seabed, covered by Archaeological underwater excavation with the aid of a water dredge protective iron cages, and there are those that, as per documentation, need to be raised to the surface and presented on land. -

However, in spite of a long interest encompassing more than a hundred years, numerous gaps remain in our herpetological knowledge. For this reason, the author wished to contribute to a better understanding by performing studies outlined below. Aims The first task was to map the distribution of amphibians and reptiles inhabiting the archipelago as data were lacking for several of the smaller islands and also the fauna of the bigger islands was insufficiently known. Subsequently, the faunistic information derived from the scientific literature and field surveys conducted by the author as well as available geological and paleogeological data were compared and analysed from a zoogeographic point of view. The author wished to identify regions of the islands boasting the greatest herpetofaunal diversity by creating dot maps based on collecting localities. To answer the question which snake species and which individuals are going to be a victim of the traffic snake roadkill and literature survey were used. The author also identified where are the areas where the most snakes are hit by a vehicle on Cres. By gathering road-killed snakes and comparing their locality data with published occurrences the author seeked to identify species most vulnerable to vehicular traffic and road sections posing the greatest threat to snakes on Cres Island. -

In this issue of the newsletter we take a look at the bioenergy landscape in our partner countries along the Danube. In this context, we set up an inventory of potential users for Danube logistics from the bioenergy industry by applying logistic criteria. We also would like to draw your attention already to the ENERGY BARGE online platform, whose first part with information on the biomass landscape will go online in June 2018. The online platform shall facilitate a cross-sector learning and contribute to a modal shift to Danube logistics. We hope you enjoy reading! The team of ENERGY BARGE ENERGY BARGE is co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF) Biomass and bioenergy company landscape in the Danube corridor The ENERGY BARGE team prepared a holistic and intuitive inventory on the biomass and bioenergy company landscape in the Danube corridor enabling identification of business partners along the bioenergy supply and value chain. Once integrated in the project’s online Danube biomass and bioenergy atlas, which will be launched in June 2018, it will serve as a business partner identification tool beyond the classical bioenergy value chain. The Danube biomass and bioenergy atlas will generate a sort of “yellow pages” of the biomass-bioenergy actor landscape in the Danube region and shall be at disposal for all business actors looking for new partners in their own country or other Danube region countries, as well as for logistics actors looking for potential customers. -

Petar bili su u antičkom razdoblju važne točke na plovnom putu duž istočne obale Jadrana što do- kazuju i starija podmorska istraživanja, osobito antičkog brodoloma u blizini Ilovika, ali i noviji nalaz brončane Oskulpture Apoksiomena. Tijekom svibnja 2009. godine vodila su se istraživanja kasnoantičke crkve na položaju Sv. Andrija (Sićadrija) na otoku Iloviku koja su dodatno potvrdila značaj tog prostora za pomorsku plovidbu. Osobito se ističe nalaz fragmentiranog nadgrobnog spomenika koji je sekundarno upotrijebljen prilikom izgradnje ove kasnoantičke crkve. U radu se osobita pažnja posvećuje upravo ovom nalazu te se analiziraju njegov epigrafski značaj i podrijetlo. S obzirom na to da je prilikom rekognosciranja Sv. Petra utvrđena veća količina antičkog materijala uz obalu kao i prisutnost mogućih antičkih zidova postavlja se pitanje važnosti otoka Sv. Petra u tom razdoblju kao i povezanost s trgovačkim centrima duž istočne obale Jadrana. Također se razmatraju potencijalni plovidbeni pravci koji su mogli prolaziti kanalom između Ilovika i Sv. Petra, a sukladno tome i razvoj ovih dvaju otoka tijekom antike i ranog srednjeg vijeka. Ključne riječi: otok Ilovik, otok Sv. Medicine, Split, Croatia *The first two authors contributed Methods In this registry-based study we used the official equally. mortality register data to analyze the mortality patterns on seven Croatian islands (Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo, Mljet, Šolta, and Vis) and Pelješac peninsula in the 1998-2013 pe- riod and calculated the average lifespan, life expectancy, and standardized mortality ratios (SMR). We compared the leading causes of death with those in the mainland popu- lation of two southernmost Croatian counties. Results The average lifespan of the island population was 3-10 years longer for men and 2-7 years longer for wom- en than that on the mainland. All-cause SMRs were signifi- cantly lower for both men and women on Korčula, Brač, Mljet, and Pelješac but significantly higher for women on Šolta (1.22; 95% confidence intervals 1.07-1.38). The lead- ing causes of death on the islands were cardiovascular dis- eases, with higher percentages in men and lower in wom- en in comparison with those on the mainland. -

Smart Islands Declaration
Smart Islands Declaration New pathways for European Islands to create smart, inclusive and thriving island societies for an innovative and sustainable Europe Forward Who we are We are European island local and regional authorities and actors representing our islands with the goal to promote the Smart Islands Initiative. The Smart Islands Initiative is a bottom-up effort spearheaded by island authorities and communities that communicates the need to tap the significant, yet largely unexploited potential of islands to function as laboratories for technological, social, environmental, economic and political innovation. The Smart Islands Initiative builds on years of collaboration between European islands and seeks to demonstrate that islands can host pilot projects and produce knowledge on smart and efficient resource and infrastructure management, which may be then transferred in mountainous, rural and generally geographically isolated areas but also scaled-up in big cities of continental Europe and beyond. The Smart Islands Initiative is inspired by the European Commission’s Smart Cities and Communities initiative, yet it goes one step further by extending the synergies beyond energy, transport and ICT to also include water and waste, directly addressing circularity in the economy. This holistic approach derives from insularity, the condition that forces island authorities to focus on how to ensure the optimal use and management of their resources and infrastructures, very often within island boundaries, in order to support sustainable and equitable economic development that fully taps into islands’ potential (geography, natural and human resources, products). Ultimately the Smart Islands Initiative advocates in favor of a place-based, transformative development agenda that makes the most out of islands’ competitive advantages, generates local growth and prosperity and contributes to EU policy goals in the fields of energy, climate mitigation and adaptation, innovation, circular economy, transport and mobility, blue growth, and the digital agenda.
