  • A Post-Caledonian Dolerite Dyke from Magerøy, North Norway: Age and Geochemistry
A post-Caledonian dolerite dyke from Magerøy, North Norway: age and geochemistry DAVID ROBERTS, JOHN G. MITCHELL & TORGEIR B. ANDERSEN Roberts. D., Mitchell, J. G. & Andersen, T. B.: A post-Caledonian dolerite dyke from Magerøy, North Norway: age and geochemistry. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 71, pp. 28294. Oslo 1991 . ISSN 0029-196X. A post-Caledonian, NW-SE trending, dolerite dyke on Magerøy has a geochemicalsignature comparable to that of continental tholeiites. Clinopyroxenes from three samples of the dolerite gave K-Ar ages of ca. 312, ca. 302 and ca. 266 Ma, suggesting a Perrno-Carboniferous age. In view of low K20 contents of the pyroxenes and the possible presence of excess argon, it is argued that the most reliable estimate of the emplacement age of the dyke is provided by the unweighted mean value, namely 293 ± 22 Ma. This Late Carboniferous age coincides with the later stages of a major phase of rifting and crustal extension in adjacent offshore areas. The dyke is emplaced along a NW-SE trending fault. Parallel or subparallel faults on Magerøy and in other parts of northem Finnmark may thus carry a component of Carboniferous crustal extension in their polyphase movement histories. NHC 64th Meeting NHC Virtual 20 + 21 April 2021 National Report NORWAY NATIONAL REPORT NORWAY Executive Summery This report gives the summary of the activities and events that have taken place within the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) since the last report given at the NHC63 Conference in Helsinki, April 2019. Some highlights: New organizational structure Pilot project for Marine Base Maps in Norway Digital Nautical Publications New Hydrographic Infrastructure Continued high activity in the Mareano project in both coastal and open sea arctic areas COVID-19 1. Hydrographic Office 2020 has been yet another eventful and challenging year for the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS), and indeed for the entire Norwegian Mapping Authority, of which we are a part. 2020 started as normal, but in March, Covid affected us in Norway as it did the rest of the world. As of March 13, we went in to a national lock down in Norway. At the NHS we were all sent home, our survey vessel M/S Hydrograf was ordered to port, and the crew sent home. The next few weeks were quite chaotic. Not all of our employees were able to work from home. Some of our production systems were not adapted to working online, and some of the data we handle are subject to restrictions making it illegal to work on them via the internet. Our IT department and some of our software suppliers worked around the clock, and within a matter of weeks our production line was operational again albeit at a slightly reduced rate. A gradual return to the office was planned for August, but due to a flare up in Covid cases after the summer holidays, the return was postponed, and as of October, most of our employees have again been working from home.

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 66, pp. 99-105. Oslo 1986. ISSN 0029-196X. An escarpment parallel to the coast off West Finnmark marks the boundary between the Scandina vian landmass of crystalline rocks and the overlying sedimentary succession offshore. Seaward-dip ping sedimentary rocks subcrop at an erosional unconformity which in turn is overlain by horizontally stratified sediment layers. The seaward dip of the sedimentary rocks is probably due to Cenozoic up lift of the landmass. The uplift was predominantly flexural but there is indication of concomitant ex tensional faulting. The erosional unconformity is probably a polycyclic and polygenetic erosional sur face initiated at the mid-Oligocene lowstand of the sea leve!. Three deltas up to 30 km wide, of sup posed glaciomarine origin, are located at the escarpment. The deltas must have been deposited by continental ice-sheet before the last Late Weichselian readvance onto the shelf. T. O. Vorren & K. Stig Hansen This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7557/5.3203 Introduction I would like to begin by explaining how I am able to speak to you about North Cape and its potential for business development, by giving you a little background information about myself and my involvement in the area. I was born and brought up in Honningsvåg, and have experienced changes which have, amongst other things, led to a reduction in the population of the area from over 5000 people to 3200 today. My work experience includes teaching, in primary and secondary schools, project leadership within the fishing industry, insurance advisor, business manager for North Cape Municipality, and Daily leader for North Cape Business Park. This last position I have held since 2007. We have 43 member businesses, locally and regionally. Our network includes both commercial industries and official institutions/organisations. Besides this, I lead the civic network of business managers in West Finnmark, and am leading the Business Park Network in Finnmark. I also work closely with the University in Tromsø, the High School in Finnmark, University in Trondheim (NTNU) and one of the most renowned research institutes in Norway, Sintef. As an active sportsman and a representative at the highest level of our local, 600 strong sports club, I feel I also have very good knowledge in this field. In this chapter I will comment on the current status and challenges within our main businesses of fishing, tourism, oil, and culture.
