he Bay Area Bluegrass Association, (BABA) was organized in 1986 and incorporated in 1987 under the Non‐Profit Corporation Act. The primary purpose of BABA is to preserve, encourage, and promote Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel music as an American art form. BABA promotes Bluegrass through being active in community events, fund raisers, festivals, and monthly shows. The monthly show is free to the public and features Bluegrass from the local and national scene. The stage show begins at 6:30 p.m., but pickers are welcome to bring their instruments and come earlier. BABA’s kitchen provides tasty, inexpensive food and beverages (NO ALCOHOL). Prizes and donations are raffled off every show. Proceeds from the kitchen, raffles/donations, and memberships from individuals and businesses are used to present the monthly shows; publish the newsletter; pay for sound equipment; promote Bluegrass and for minor incidental expenses. Please help support Bluegrass. Join BABA today. Your membership will help us to meet our goals and objectives. See membership levels below. BABA is a 501(a) tax deductible organization. See any Director for information.

Well Hello there bluegrass buddies,

The year is winding down and the hot summer is giving way to the hot fall. We here at BABA aren’t ready to call it a year yet, so for the next few months we have some real treats for you.

Let’s start with Jim Hurst this month. If you had your choice of a guitar picker to do a workshop and show, I can’t think of a better one. Jim has played with everyone who is anyone and made them better. His skills are unsur- passed and we are happy to bring him to BABA.

Next month we keep it going with Daniel Carwile. The multi-award winning fiddle player will be doing a fiddle workshop and show for us.

Then, just for us on the last show of the year, we have a triple feature night with three of your favorite bands, White Dove, LoneStar and The Bluegrass Solution.

And we’re already working on next year, with Saltgrass starting off the year in true BABA fashion.

Remember, BABA works because of and for you. It’s your donations and membership that keep us going. Things cost more every day and we are doing all we can to keep the shows and jams free. Bring some friends and introduce them to the BABA bluegrass family. Become a BABA member. Volunteer to help out. We’re still looking for kitchen help and a sound tech to help out with the sound. That’s a really really tuff job. Roger and Mark have done a great job for the last few months but they need a rest every once in a while. If you’re a sound man or know one - we need you!

Keep on picking,

Rick Kirkland President

And the winner is………………..

Lisa Crawford of Deer Park, Tx.

Lisa was not at the Civic Center when her name was called as the winner of the Gibson Advanced Jumbo Guitar. Ed Fryday quickly reached her by phone and before we knew it, Lisa was there to claim her new guitar.

As you can see by the big smile on Lisa’s face, she was thrilled to be the proud owner of the Gibson. Lisa, thinking she wouldn’t have a chance of being the winner, was “talked into” buying one ticket in the raffle drawing.

There will be drawings in the future for instruments as well as other great prizes. There’s always a winner - maybe next time it’ll be you. Keep trying and keep supporting BABA.

Generously donated by Fuller’s Vintage Guitar, www.fullersguitar.com

14 The BABA Bulletin September 2010 The BABA Bulletin September 2010 15 A Shared Tribute to a Great Lady By Juanita Stockton

Many years after Juarez Grant’s death, Alan Munde gave praise to her an an IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award luncheon prior to presenting Bill Grant an award. To my knowledge, she never stepped on a festival stage other than to decorate the Grant Family’s stage at Hugo, Oklahoma. She simply stood in the audience among her many friends each summer when being recognized. A wise and supportive mate for 28 years, and a festival fellow-owner for twenty- odd years, she was warm and outgoing, reaching out to others - listening rather than talking about herself. Like Will Rogers, she, too, was a goodwill ambassador. Rogers said, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” Bluegrass music people changed the words to say, “I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Juarez.” What a beautiful tribute when she dealt with thousands and thousands. I still have a VCR tape of the festival following her death, on which, she was paid tribute. The words of Melvin Goins and the now late Don Wiley are a veritable treasure, as are the stories they tell in her daugh- ter Brenda Weatherford’s thirty year festival history Visions of the Past. It is early September, and it still seems as though I should be going to the once great - now forever gone - Hugo Festival and be greeted at the gate by Juarez, who is still remembered by many of us as one of the truly great ladies in Bluegrass. (The free verse poem A Recipe for Love is an excerpt from Brenda’s book. I wrote it from the heart, and I’d like to share it with you.)

A Recipe for Love

One heart big enough to love the world, One smile touch the hearts of all who felt its warmth, One family - all generations - scattered somewhere about, safe on Salt Creek Park Grounds, One hillside covered with Bluegrass and Old Time Music lovers (all friends, of course), Five days and evenings - and nights - of some of the finest music ever to be played under the sun, moon and stars -- or, sometimes, clouds, sending down the rain, One overflowing cup of very real “You all come back to see us next year.” Combine ingredients and mix well. No special topping is needed for this recipe for the Special Inner Beauty of One whose Presence permeated Salt Creek Park for twenty-four Wonderful Summers. Juanita

16 The BABA Bulletin September 2010 The BABA Bulletin Stptember 2010 17 Irish Humor Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O’Leary’s apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutched his chest, and dropped dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continued playing standing up. Michael O’Conner looked around and asked, “Oh, me boys, someone got’s to tell Paddy’s wife. Who will it be?” They drew straws. Paul Gallagher picked the short one. They told him to be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation any worse. “Discreet??? I’m the most discreet Irishman you’ll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me.” Gallagher went over to Murphy’s house and knocked on the door. Mrs. Murphy answered, and asked what he wanted. Gallagher declared, “Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home.” “Tell him to drop dead!” said Murphy’ wife. “I’ll go tell him.” said Gallagher. Contributed by Patrick Milligan
