NEWS ITEMS: ! A ‘base jumper’ may face trespassing charges after his attempt to leap from a 1,064 ft tower in St. Louis County, Missouri went wrong on October 30. His parachute got caught up in one of the tower’s guy wires leaving him dangling 120 feet off the ground. The unidentified man eventually helped rescuers free him by cutting himself free from the parachute after more than two hours. The tower is used by WIL-FM 92.3 St. Louis and WXOS 101.1 East St. Louis, which both switched to their backup site during the rescue.

! The Wall Street Journal Radio Network will cease operating the end of this year. This includes their WSJ Business Report hosted by Gordon Deal, but a similar program will debut on the Compass Media Network. The program serves as an intro to morning drive on more than 250 mostly news and talk stations, with many affiliates also airing a weekend edition.

! Tribune Media will pull the plug on sports WGWG-LP 87.7 Chicago (‘The Game 87.7') on December 31. Launched in February, the station failed to catch fire in the ratings against two 50,000 Watt AMers with similar sports talk formats.

In the first photo is a Channel Master P7 UHF parabolic and an Antennacraft CS-1100 VHF antenna on a 40 ft. tower.

Next, inside the shack we see a Sanyo PP19241 TV/Monitor (with WMC-5 displayed on the screen), a Zenith DTT-901 DTV box, and an Alliance HD73 rotor box.

The Editor’s Note

We lost one of the DX legends in November with the passing of K1MOD, Jeff Kadet. If there was a Mt. Rushmore of DXers, Jeff would most certainly be amongst it. There is only so much “credit” one can take for DX they receive – after all, it is the equipment that is pulling in the signals, and there is all sorts of luck and variance that come into producing favorable conditions. Of course a factor above all is one’s location. But as any seasoned DX’er will tell you, there are exponentially more days in a calendar year where no DX is observed versus anything notable (see the year 2014 for evidence), and a high level of determination is needed to actually be in place to receive the stations that keep us coming back for more. In that category, Jeff was second to none.

Being an admitted degenerate, I often like to peruse through old WTFDA VUDs and note some of the more obscure loggings. A couple of my favorites from Jeff’s catalog include seeing multiple UHF stations from Denver via tropo on 7/30/95 (an unheard of path with Denver’s usually arid climate), along with receiving WLVI-56 from Boston in tropo on 9/4/90 (1015 miles, difficult enough getting tropo over the Appalachians, let alone well into New England). The latter must have been a thrill for Jeff, being originally from the Bay State. ______

As for the season it had its ups and downs but E-skip was scarce. Trops was generally good 7/5/14 E-skip in September especially in late September when it was great. During the last week of September CKSA-2, CHVD-2, Cuba, Mexico E-skip trops was close to non-stop out to 400 miles and making into Ohio, , , Illinois, 7/11/14 E-skip Wisconsin. On one occasion I went to a hilltop spot and DXed from my vehicle with an RCA 7 inch Florida, Alabama (channel 2 only) monitor TV using car battery with small antenna on an 8 foot pole with all night amazing results. Band 9/1/14 to 9/20/14 was full with some stations in for 12 hours non- stop. Also there is a new digital station out of Good trops on several days mostly Toledo, Buffalo (low power) WBXZ-56 (also ID’ing as COZT Michigan (central, western), many Canadians 56 with sub channels 56-2, 56-3-4-5-6 decoding (Ontario) down to 17-1 17-2-3-4-5-6). Also WDTB-39 (Daystar) is on from Hamburg, NY which I receive 9/20/14 to 9/30/14 daily. Now to my report: Trops daily non-stop, also all night – Toldedo 11, 5/11/14 E-skip 13, 30; Detroit 7, 21, 44, 45, 62; Lansing; Jackson; CIII2-9 (new); CKWL7-6 (new); Canadians 22, 28, XEFE-2, XEFB-2, WDVZ-2, CMBA-2 31, 35, 36, 40, 41, 42, 47, 48, 51, 57, 69, also Canadian analogs 2, 5, 6, 8 (2), 11, 42; WEYI-25; 5/26/14 E-skip Flint 12, 28; WNEM-22; WLFI-11 (new); WLUK-11 (new); WDTV-20; WLAJ-51; WHRM-24 (new); Florida, Alabama, WSBT-22; WKAR-40; WSMH-16 (new); WCMV-17 (new); CITO-3 (new); CKVR-3; WNIT-35; also 6/1/14 E-skip Chicago DTVs, Milwaukee, Kalamazoo DTV breaking in at hills location only but was difficult as Canadian analogs band was full of stations with high level signal

Also seeing Canadian analogs lately on Santa Barbara, CA 93105-2523 channels 6, 11, 22 on daily basis but all weak. This past spring I upgraded to the ELAD FDM-S2 SDR from the combination of the Perseus SDR w/ FM+ Downconverter. The main reason for the switch was the ability to record and playback 6 mhz of bandwidth vs 2 mhz for the Perseus. The price of the ELAD is about half of that of the Perseus alone (without the FM+). The overall performance of the ELAD even without the additional bandwidth is better than the Perseus on FM and at the least the equal to the Perseus on MW and HF.

I'm still in the process of reviewing my Eskip recordings from this summer. I have about 20% of the overall recordings to review but here are my logs to date. I have not reviewed the list for new catches but an early guess would be 30-40% listed are new.
