Hero Motosports Team Rally Keeps It Steady in Stage 3 of the Dakar Rally Wadi Ad-Dawasir, Saudi Arabia, January 5, 2021 HERO MOTOSPORTS TEAM RALLY KEEPS IT STEADY IN STAGE 3 OF THE DAKAR RALLY Continuing their sound run in the 2021 Dakar Rally, the rider trio from Hero MotoSports Team Rally turned in another good performance in the third stage of the rally today. Joaquim Rodrigues finished the stage in the 20th place, Sebastian Buhler came in 21st and Santosh closed the stage in the 36th place. Joaquim Rodrigues led the team standings today as well, continuing to grow in confidence. In a predominantly sandy stage, he retained his Top 20 position in the overall rankings at the end of Stage 3. Sebastian Buhler also kept it steady throughout the stage to retain his 24th position in the overall rankings while C S Santosh tackled another long stage really well to gain a couple of positions in the overall rankings. He now stands at the 34th position. It is still early days in the Dakar 2021 but the growing confidence of JRod, consistency of Buhler and determination of Santosh coupled with the flawless performance of the new Hero 450 Rally bike bodes well for the team’s prospects in the upcoming stages. Up next, the rally will move out of the Wadi Ad-Dawasir to the capital city of Riyadh for the longest stage of the rally covering 813 kms, including the transport section. The timed special will be relatively shorter at 337 kms. Joaquim Rodrigues (Competitor No. 27) said, “Today was a lonely stage for me as I was riding alone for most part of it. It was quite windy as well and the tracks kept getting covered so I decided to slow down and concentrate on my navigation. Overall, I am happy to get my bike to the finish safely and see the back of one more stage.” C S Santosh (Competitor No. 50) said, “Today’s was another long and fast stage. It was mostly about sitting back and opening the full throttle. Because of the wind, the visibility was not that great so it was tough to go full gas all the way. It wasn’t very enjoyable for me but I am happy to have put in a good stage today and also probably the best three days in the Dakar.” Page 1 of 2 Sebastian Buhler (Competitor No. 24) said, “Today’s stage was very good as it was similar to what we did yesterday with nice open sandy tracks and some stones in between. After 9,000km of brutal racing across Peru, Bolivia and Argentina the competitors finally crossed the finish line of the 2018 Dakar Rally in Córdoba. Carlos Sainz, Matthias Walkner, Ignacio Casale and Eduard Nikolaev all carried big leads heading into the final 120km special stage around the home of rallying in Argentina and were not to be denied. For Walkner it was a maiden victory in the toughest rally raid on the planet, a second for Sainz and Casale while Nikolaev now has a hat-trick of truck titles. For full detailed results, click HERE. Car Experience was the name of the game for Carlos Sainz claiming a second Dakar victory and his first since 2010. The Spaniard had it all to lose going into the final few stages but kept his cool and controlled the race perfectly. Sainz, 55, said: “I am extremely happy for me and everyone behind the victory. It was hard when you have such a big lead as it is easy to start making mistakes. This was the hardest Dakar I have ever done, including the ones in Africa.” Nasser Al-Attiyah enjoyed four stage wins in 2018 to finish second overall, while final stage winner Giniel de Villiers edged Mr Dakar Stéphane Peterhansel to the final podium spot. Peterhansel said: “We did two big mistakes and lost a lot of time. This is the race though. At the end, I still don’t know if I will continue, I need time to think about it.” Bike Matthias Walkner created a little bit of history in Argentina by becoming the first Austrian to ever win the bike category of the Dakar Rally.

    Just who is Matthias Walkner? A fact-file on the first Austrian to ever become a Dakar Rally bike champion. Matthias Walkner hasn’t always had it easy when it comes to the Dakar Rally. But one year after finishing second behind teammate Sam Sunderland and at just his fourth attempt, he climbed onto the top step of the podium in Argentina to win his first Dakar title. The 31-year-old has been Mr Consistent in the 40th edition of the legendary rally raid race, calmly navigating his way across Peru, Bolivia and Argentina to cross the finish line first in Córdoba. Here are some things you may not know about the man born just outside Salzburg. Did you know? - Surprisingly, he is not the first Austrian to ever triumph at the Dakar after compatriot Peter Reif won the truck category in 1997. - He is however the first Austrian rider to take part in the Dakar since Heinz Kinigader, who fittingly acts as Walkner’s mentor. - From the age of 16 (back in 2002), he worked in a motorcycle shop to improve his mechanical skills and understanding of how a bike works. - He first joined KTM in 2004. - On his first Dakar in 2015, he shadowed defending champion Marc Coma but had to retire from the event with illness. - In 2016, he again failed to make the finish after breaking his femur in a crash on stage seven. It took him 12 hours to get him to hospital in La Paz after the crash. - In his rehab, he did 30 hours a week for 24 weeks at Red Bull’s therapy centre.
