Steinway is the official piano of Merkin Hall KaufmanMusicCenter.org/MH | 212 501 3330 About the Artists Montreal’s fabled avant-garde outfit Bell Orchestre comes together in the beautiful Canadian woodlands to create a unique performance film. The group consists of six musical mavericks, including Arcade Fire members Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry, who continue to shift the boundaries of instrumental music with their highly anticipated new record House Music — an immersive ecosystem of an album to be released March 19 on Erased Tapes. With the legacies of improvisation-exploring greats like Talk Talk, The Orb, Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis and the late Ennio Morricone in mind, on House Music, Bell Orchestre captures the impulsive, connective, mysterious poetics of musical invention happening in real-time. Both the album and this visual counterpart, directed by band member Kaveh Nabatian, unfold as one long piece, a recorded-then-sculpted improvisation that vastly expands their work, coalescing classical and electronic instrumentation in the creation of genre-defying musical worlds. A SCENE WITHOUT A NAME: INDIE CLASSICAL AND AMERICAN NEW MUSIC IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY William Robin A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Mark Katz Andrea Bohlman Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter Benjamin Piekut © 2016 William Robin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT WILLIAM ROBIN: A Scene Without a Name: Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation represents the first study of indie classical, a significant subset of new music in the twenty-first century United States. The definition of “indie classical” has been a point of controversy among musicians: I thus examine the phrase in its multiplicity, providing a framework to understand its many meanings and practices. Indie classical offers a lens through which to study the social: the web of relations through which new music is structured, comprised in a heterogeneous array of actors, from composers and performers to journalists and publicists to blog posts and music venues. This study reveals the mechanisms through which a musical movement establishes itself in American cultural life; demonstrates how intermediaries such as performers, administrators, critics, and publicists fundamentally shape artistic discourses; and offers a model for analyzing institutional identity and understanding the essential role of institutions in new music. Three chapters each consider indie classical through a different set of practices: as a young generation of musicians that constructed itself in shared institutional backgrounds and performative acts of grouping; as an identity for New Amsterdam Records that powerfully shaped the record label’s music and its dissemination; and as a collaboration between the ensemble yMusic and Duke University that sheds light on the twenty-first century status of the new-music ensemble and the composition PhD program.

NATIONAL DANCE PROJECT august 2015 the new england foundation for the arts (nefa) launched the national dance Project (NDP) in 1996 to support the creation and touring of new dance works throughout the United States. NDP has distributed more than $28 million in funding to enhance partnerships between artists and presenters and engage and expand audiences for dance. To date, NDP has supported the creation of over 350 new choreographic works that have toured to all 50 states, Washington, DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, reaching over 3.6 2 million audience members. Alongside grantmaking for creation and touring, NDP works through specific initiatives to 3 develop a strong infrastructure for dance. Currently these focus on production residencies that prepare work for tour, international exchange, a network of contemporary art centers 4 working at the intersection of performing and visual arts, and professional development for dance artists and presenters in regions across the United States through the Regional 5 Dance Development Initiative. NDP is approaching its 20th anniversary. This provides a timely opportunity to both 6 reflect on the program’s impact and to consider how NDP can best support artistic and presentation practices in the years to come. Over the next year, we are working with 7 Metris Arts Consulting and RMC Research to evaluate the comprehensive impact of NDP on the dance landscape in the United States. 8 This publication features 18 new projects awarded Production Grants in 2015 to support creation and touring over the next three years; one-third of these artists are receiving 9 NDP support for the first time.
