Advocate Ram Jethmalani – Jagran Lakecity University Chair for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice

School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University Bhopal had the utmost honor of associating with renowned Senior Advocate and former Union Minister, Ministry of Law, Government of India, Advocate Ram Jathmalani as he signed an MoU with the Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal to establish

Advocate Mr. Ram Jethmalani with Honorable Chancellor Shri Hari Mohan Gupta, Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Anoop Swarup and Prof. (Dr.) Yogendra Shrivastava while presenting the MoU.

‘Advocate Ram Jethmalani – Jagran Lakecity University Chair for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice’ (under School of Law) in which various academic, research, and development activities shall be planned at national level. School of Law has already proposed one year programme of LL.M. in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice under this chair.

9 Annual Report 2016-17|School of Law| Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal A brief Introduction of ‘Advocate Ram Jethmalani – Jagran Lakecity University Chair for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice’ To honor the valuable contributions by legendary jurist Mr. Ram Jethmalani in the field of criminal law and jurisprudence, School of Law is proposing to establish Chair of Criminal Law by the name JAGRAN LAKECITY UNIVERSITY CHAIR ON CRIMINAL LAW (JLUCCL). Criminal law and criminal justice have always been the fields of practice and research. Law is needed to keep pace with the rapid changes in the society. Various dimensions of crime have emerged in the past few decades. JLUCCL aims to ensure continuous growth in the area of criminal law and to establish a common platform for those who have stake in the criminal justice system of the country. It also aspires to create a bridge between the vulnerable and underprivileged section of the society and criminal justice system. OBJECTIVES  promote comprehensive research on criminal law and criminal justice system  promote the study of interplay of criminal law with other sectors of study  enrich the members of the criminal law field with insights on recent developments  conduct training programs for advocates, judges and academicians  coordinate with the government regarding the required amendments in the criminal law system  work on providing access to justice to the unrepresented and under- represented section the society  work on the development of the ADR mechanism in the field of criminal law  provide free legal aid to the vulnerable and underprivileged section of the society

Honorable Justice Balakrishnan, former CJI with Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Anoop Swarup and Prof. (Dr.) Yogendra Shrivastava.

Balakrishanan, Konakuppakatil Gopinathan, B.Sc., LL.M, born on 12-05-1945. Got enrolled as an Advocate of the Kerala Bar Council on 16-03-1968. Practiced on both on Civil and Criminal sides at Erinakulam. Appointed as a Munsif in the Kerala Judicial Service on 10-01-1973 and later resigned from service and resumed practice as an Advocate in the Kerala High Court. On 26-09-1985 - appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court. On 24-11-1997 transferred to Gujarat High Court.

On 16-07-1998 became the Chief Justice of the High Court of Gujarat and was transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Madras and assumed charge there as Chief Justice on 09-09-1999.

On 08-06-2000 elevated as the Judge, Supreme Court. Appointed as The Chief Justice of India in the forenoon of 14.01.2007. 11 Annual Report 2016-17|School of Law| Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal 1. Academic Activities

1.1. JLU National Moot Court Competition

The much awaited event of the year, first JLU National Moot Court Competition took place from February 17 to February 19, 2017. This competition of great scale and magnitude fetched attention of the entire nation towards School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University. Grand opening of the JLU National Moot Court Competition by the living legend, Advocate Ram Jethmalani

The event was inaugurated with grandeur by Mr. Ram Jethmalani, former Law Minister and senior advocate, Supreme Court of India. In his address of more than 90 minutes, he urged students to choose litigation as a career path and also shed light on the scope and opportunities of the field. He opined that the law profession is one of dignity and honor and earning money is secondary. He also lauded the efforts of School of Law for organizing a national level competition in its nascent stage.

12 Annual Report 2016-17|School of Law| Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal Honorable Chancellor, JLU Bhopal Shri Hari Mohan Gupta quoted the vision statement of the University “There’s no greater divine power than knowledge” to emphasize the value of competition where bright minds compete with each other and also enrich the gathering with information. He asked students to build a competitive attitude to excel in all dimensions of the life and most importantly to accept any result as a value addition to their lifelong experience.

Prof. (Dr.) Anoop Swarup, Vice Chancellor, JLU Bhopal impressed upon the right alignment of education with practice in the industry. He explained how the exercise of Moot Court is bringing budding lawyers one step closer to their future ambition to excel in the profession of legal practice. He also suggested students discover their real potential through testing themselves in such events where feedback is received instantly.

Various dignitaries of the University including the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, CEO, Dean (Academics), etc. were also present at the ceremony. The welcome address was delivered by the Dean (Academics).

Four teams i.e. Christ University, Bangalore, Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur, School of Excellence in Law, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai, and campus law centre I, Delhi university contested in the semi-finals. The grand finale of the competition was between Christ University, Bangalore and HNLU, Raipur.

In the valedictory ceremony of the 1st JLU National Moot Court Competition, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India and Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission), Justice Ved Prakash Sharma (Judge, M.P. High Court, Indore Bench) presented the Winner trophy and cash prize of 1.5 Lacs to the HNLU Raipur team. Mr. V. Sridharan, Senior Advocate and founder of the famous law firm Laxmikumaran Sridharan and Mr. Vipin Jain, Senior Advocate and co-founder of TSC Legal, presented the runners-up with trophy and cash prize of 1 Lac. The cash prize for these awards was Rs. 25,000 each. In the valedictory ceremony, Justice Balakrishnan while congratulating the participants motivated them to join the prestigious profession of law.

He also urged the students to focus their study on the emerging sectors like Cyber Law, Competition law, Corporate Law, etc.

1.2.1. One Day National Brainstorming Session on Language and Soft Skills for Legal Professionals - October 5, 2016.

School of Law took a unique initiative in legal education by conducting a Brain-Storming exercise with a theme of Language and Soft Skills for Legal Professionals. The aim of the session was to provide intensive training sessions to the participants and polish their behavioral and interpersonal skills so as to accelerate their growth in the profession. In various subject-specific technical sessions, trained professionals from across the country interacted with the participants regarding different aspects and attributes of personality development and professional growth.

Prof. (Dr.) Yogendra Shrivastava, Director, School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal delivered the welcome address followed by the theme address by Prof. (Dr.) C.A. Gurudath , Dean - Academics, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal. Shri. Manu Shrivastava, Principal Secretary, Department of Renewable Energy, Govt. of MP delivered the Keynote address.

Core session of Brain storming session started with the aim to provide a day of intensive training sessions to the participants and polish their behavioral and interpersonal skills so as to accelerate their growth in the profession. In various subject-specific technical sessions, trained professionals from across the country interacted with the participants regarding different aspects and attributes of personality development and professional growth. The entire session was moderated by Mr. Shivender Rahul, Lecturer of English, and School of Law. Each resource person was allotted 30 minutes to speak, followed by the question answers round by the students. The highlights of the session are mentioned below:

 Dr. Madhusri Shrivastava , Associate Professor , IIM Indore in her impressive talk on Communication and Interpersonal Skills (Verbal ability and Listening) urged students to see beyond the set norms and take cognizance of local traditions and work culture while communicating. She emphasized on the progressive outlook towards the art of communication and advised students to read as much literature as they can from variety of themes.  Prof. Diwakar Shukla, Director, School of Media & Communication, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal who possesses an illustrious and versatile career in Media, Corporate world and Academia, shared his experience with the gathering. His theme was Workplace Ethics, Body-language and Working with Superiors. He categorized various levels of professional communication and what it takes to groom such skills while grasping from the surrounding environment.

25 Annual Report 2016-17|School of Law| Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal  Prof. Rajesh P. Khambayat, Head, Department of Education & Research, National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training & Research, Bhopal delivered a session on Personality Development, Positive Attitude and Confidence building. In his impeccable and thoroughly planned presentation, Prof. Khambayat used various real life examples  Ms.Jaya Arya , Renowned Personality Development & Life Skills Trainer interacted with students on the topic of Work-Life Balance, Managing Stress and Time Personality development & Tips for being successful in life. She shared examples from her own life while dealing with stress and also keeping emotional intelligence while taking any professional decision.  Mr. Shahroz Aafridi , Eminent Journalist explained how important it is for a student to focus on Interviews and Group discussion skills in the current perspective. Mr. Aafridi mentioned about world leaders and how they manage their public image while interacting with media and society. He emphasized the versatile role a lawyer plays in the society.

1.6.1. National Pool Selection

Preliminary Round

The Preliminary rounds for the III National Pool Selection Moot Court Competition at School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University were held on August 5, 2016. The competition saw participation from 34 students across the II and III year. 14 students qualified the Preliminary rounds to appear in the Final Rounds which is the ranking round. The judges for the Preliminary rounds were:

These students will form part of the National Moot Pool and will represent the University in various Inter-University National Moot Court Competitions. 1.7.1. Mega National Lok Adalat Visit (at District Court, Bhopal) for the students of BBA,LL.B. (Hons.) IIIrd Semester and B.Com.,LL.B. IIIrd Semester – November 12, 2016 At the outset, inauguration of the Lok Adalat was done through Video Conferencing by Hon’ble Chief Justice, High Court of Madhya Pradesh. Afterwards, the faculty and group of students accompanied judges in the garland ceremony of statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Later, the students were addressed by Hon’ble Madam Giri Bala Singh, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bhopal. She briefly introduced students with basic concepts behind the introduction and implementation of Lok Adalat Proceedings, ADR mechanisms, i.e., Arbitration, Conciliation and Mediation techniques for speedy disposal of the cases. She explained that Lok Adalat is a system by which justice is dispensed speedily without entangling into the technicalities which reduces heavy burden on the Courts and provides relief to litigants. The students were divided into seven groups to attend Lok Adalat Proceedings on various matters related to public utilities, Electricity, Insurance, Family matters etc. The respective Hon'ble Judges explained students about various technical, procedural and social aspects behind the application of legal provisions. They suggested students to read latest journals and articles for better understanding on contemporary development in the profession of Law.

The objective of the visit was to create awareness among the girls about their legal rights. The students were divided into different groups to speak on topics like Right to free legal aid, domestic violence laws, laws related to sexual harassment, helpline available to women and other important matters related to health and sanitation. Students had an interactive session with the girls where they addressed the curiosity of girls regarding law as a subject. Sharing their knowledge with these girls was a great experience for the School of Law students.

A group of 12 students of B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) IIIrd & LL.B. IIIrd Semester of School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal, went to Rajiv Gandhi Government High-School, Machna Colony, Bhopal for a social sensitization programme under legal aid activity.

Under the banner of Legal Aid, students performed a skit in front of the student of primary and middle school. The skit was upon the general awareness of the consumer rights. The session was very interactive and the student from both the schools enjoyed a lot. A feedback was taken in form of question and answer session, the student were given a chocolate for every right answer. After the completion of the skit the students got informed about the rights which a consumer possesses. At the end of the whole session, sweets were distributed amongst all the students.

1.7.4. Visit to Old Age Home "Aasra" for Students of First Year

Students presented many cultural performances to entertain senior citizens which they enjoyed thoroughly. The show forayed with a warm introduction and a mellifluous group song. After this a game show “” was conducted by a student of B.Com.,LL.B. (Hons.) who imitated Mr. Amitabh Bachhan and asked several questions to the audience. Students also distributed beautiful hand-made cards to the people who answered the questions. Afterwards, another group of students gave an enthralling dance performance on some classic Hindi tracks. Few senior citizens also recited poems and shared their experiences among all the students present there. After an informal interaction, a comedy skit was performed by the students on the theme of ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’. The show ended with a beautiful retro-themed dance performance by the students. Students distributed snacks, some essential goods and first-aid kits. A sophisticated electronic blood pressure tracking machine was also presented to the senior citizens as a token of respect.

‘LITIGIUM’ (A Discussion, Deliberation and Argumentation - DDA Society): An initiative of the School of Law along the cultural lines of internationally recognized law institutes to provide an idea-sharing platform and to enhance the oratory and debating skills of the students.

Following activities were held to mark the beginning of Litigium:

Students of 2nd Year and 3rd Year (BBALLB/BCMLLB) participated in group discussion/debate.

1. The motion for the debate for 2nd year was “The Government Policy of keeping Shopping Malls open for business 24/7 is in general interest of the public.”

2. The motion for the debate for 3rd year was “The implementation of GST (Goods & Service Tax) will unify the taxation regime of India to ensure a better economy.”

The activity provided a well-moderated platform for the students to freely present their opinions in a professional manner. The response of the participants was overwhelming.

1.9.1. Orientation Programme - For Second and Third Year Students – July 4, 2016 School of Law invited Shri. Vijay Wate, Additional Director General of Police (Retd.), M.P. Police as the Chief Guest to interact with students. Shri Wate in his address discussed the prevailing situation of Law & Order in India and enlisted various flaws present in our legal system as it is more than 100 years old and some of laws have become obsolete and demanded the enactment of new laws. He, further, raised his concern on the grave issue of emerging public distrust in legal and political system of India and asserted that Truth is the soul of law. While replying to question on police reforms, raised by Ujjawal Tiwari, student of B.B.A.LL.B (Hons.) V semester, Shri Wate opined that police and even judicial reforms are indeed the need of the hour. He emphasized on the value based society.

1.9.2. Orientation Programme - for first year students – July 19, 2016 The event commenced auspiciously with the lighting of the lamp and Saraswati Vandana followed by the welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Yogendra Srivastava, Director, School of Law. The distinguished dignitaries were welcomed with Tulasi saplings. The inaugural address was delivered by honorable Vice Chancellor. He talked about the importance of education, discipline and the role of lawyers in our country. He boosted the morale of the fresh students by taking their individual introductions wherein the student talked about their educational background and inspiration. 46 Annual Report 2016-17|School of Law| Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal Following the inaugural address, first among the dignitaries was honorable Justice N.K. Jain. He talked to the students about the key aspects of the judicial system of India. In his address, he quoted Justice Chawla who said that law is nothing but strong common sense. He talked about various issues and challenges the justice delivery system of the country if facing. He expressed that the legal system of India is overcrowded and fiercely competitive. He also mentioned the fact that there has been has gradual declination of the efficiency of the bar and bench and motivated the students to join the legal profession in the future. He recognized the School of Law as one of the premier law institutes of the country. Mr. S.K. Raut, DGP (Retd.), M.P. Police addressed the gathering. He emphasized the role of lawyers in the development of India. He impressively engaged the audience with his words. He gave an expansion to our SOL i.e. Self Organized Learning. He presented the concept of H2O (water) in the life of a law student which stands for honesty, hard-work and obedience. Mr. Raut recognized that our honorable Vice-Chancellor is a living example of true leadership. Afterwards, Mr. Ajay Gupta, Senior Advocate, M.P. High Court, interacted with the students and talked about the importance of law and its knowledge. He opined that every citizen should know the law. He also discussed about the numerous opportunities that present themselves in front of a law graduate. He asserted that litigation is the best sector for any law graduate as it offers a considerable degree of freedom and a chance of individual development. He also emphasized that law students during their course should utilize their free time by engaging themselves in practical work like internships, clerkships, court visits, etc. After Mr. Ajay Gupta, honorable Registrar Prof. Nesamoorthy addressed the gathering and explained various rules and regulations of the University. He extended his warm wishes to the fresh students. He was thoroughly impressed with the organization and management of the event and mentioned that it was the best orientation program he had ever witnessed. Finally, to formally conclude the ceremony, vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Shobha Bhardwaj, Associate Professor, School of Law. The second phase of the function started with the address of Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Khare, Dean (Student Welfare). He talked about house activities i.e. cultural, sports, literary and social activities of the University. He also discussed the regulations of the University pertaining to ragging and indiscipline. He also threw light on the placement and other career-oriented activities undertaken by the University. After Prof. Khare’s address, Mrs. Bharti Banerjee, Chief Librarian, JLU, explained to the students the library rules and regulations. She delivered an impressive address on the importance of library resources for a law student.

‘Elan-2016’ - was organized by the Jagran Lakecity University for more than 40 schools of Bhopal. Various competitions namely, Quiz, Debate, Extempore, Ad Mad and Poster-making were organized for the students of 12th standard. Mr. Alok Sanjar, Member of Parliament, Bhopal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. As Guests of Honor, Mrs. Jaishiri Kiyawat, Commissioner (Woman and Child Development, (Govt. of M.P.) and Mr. Neeraj Dubey, Commissioner, School Education (Govt. of M.P.), were also present and distributed trophies and certificates to the winners. Mr. Alok Sanjar, while interacting with the gathering, motivated the young students to choose and pursue the prime goal in life. He said that apart from the government, various educational institutions are also responsible for the academic and overall development of the students and these institutions can play a vital role in guiding the young generation toward a righteous path. The academic meet was highly praised by Mrs. Jaishri Kiyawat. She expressed great delight and said that such events are a unique blend of entertainment and learning for the students. Mr. Neeraj Dubey, while addressing the gathering, said that the students, instead of getting pressurized by their parents and relatives, should opt for the field of education of their interest and build their future in the same. 1.9.5. Manupatra Training The Department of Library at Jagran Lakecity University successfully hosted Hands-on Training Workshop of Manuptra on 30th August 2016. The Workshop was aimed at creating the awareness and thereby promoting the usage of the online learning resource “Manupatra” among the students of School of Law. Dr. Yogendra Srivastava, Director – School of Law, inaugurated the programme. The workshop followed an interactive learning module and was delivered by Mr. Chintansinh Jadeja, from Manuptra. Mr. Jadeja explained the students about the versatility and easy to use features of the platform. The students used the online resource in the presence of Mr. Jadeja and clarified their doubts about the usage and efficiency of the resource system.
