The restaurant was opened by husband and wife George and Rena Poulos in 1958 and is still operated by the Poulos family as of 2011. It is also known for its neon sign,Googie architecture, and 1950s decor. Pann's is located at the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and La Tijera Boulevard in Westchester, Los Angeles. The building and its iconic neon sign were designed by architects Eldon Davis and Helen Liu Fong of the Armet & Davis architectural firm. Pann's remains one of the best preserved examples of Davis' Googie designs, according to the Los Angeles Times. Despite claims made on the restaurant's website, it was not, in fact, used as a filming location in the movie Pulp Fiction Like many coffee shops it serves breakfast all day and night. The restaurant also serves "blue-plate specials," complete meals that vary daily. Pann's includes an angular edifice and large plate glass windows and has been described as having "the classic coffee shop architecture". It was designed by Helen Liu Fong, who also designed the Holiday Bowl, Johnie's coffee shop, and the original Norms Restaurant. She included tropical landscaping in the design, and was part of the firm of Armet & Davis that one commentator refers to as "the Frank Lloyd Wright of 1950s coffee shops." Pann's is currently owned by Rena Poulos and son Jim Poulos.Ed Begley told a story about running into César Chávez at Pann's in the 1980s. -

Las Vegas was a railroad town, built to house the railroad workers and their families. The clubs, casinos, stores, schools, hotels, professional offices, and railroad station were all downtown. Highway 91 (now the Strip) went from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, passing through Las Vegas. Scattered along the highway, leading into Las Vegas, were some small clubs, but they were few and far between. his new hotel. I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture. -

The designation shall include the detached guest house built in 1938. This recommendation is based on the following findings: 1. The resource embodies the distinctive characteristics through the retention of character defining features of Spanish Eclectic architecture and retains a very good level of architectural integrity from its 1930-38 period of significance. 2. As part of the scope of work, a site visit was conducted and relevant archival material on the subject property was collected and reviewed. This assessment includes a succinct discussion of the survey methodology used, a summarized property description, a brief historic context, and a concise preliminary evaluation for potential individual historical significance. Relevant supporting material has also been included, as applicable. In concluding the preliminary assessment it appears the subject property possess sufficient historical importance and architectural merit to recommend further consideration as a potential City of Santa Monica Landmark. Because of its rare Googie architectural qualities and association with noted master architects Armet & Davis the property may satisfy criteria associated with historical architecture. It is also recommended that as part of any additional investigation of the property’s landmark potential, the status of its historical integrity and a more extensive comparative analysis of extant Googie style coffee shop restaurants remaining in the City be completed. Methodology For this preliminary assessment a site inspection, a review of building permits and tax assessor records, and site-specific research were completed to document the property’s existing condition, develop an appropriate themed-based historic context, and assist in evaluating the residence for potential historical significance. -

Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92263 Re: Tahquitz Plaza by architect Hugh Kaptur, Tahquitz Canyon and Calle El Segundo To the Planning Commission: I am writing as an architect, historian, and author of nineteen books on Modern architecture to express my support for the preservation of the Tahquitz Plaza office complex because of its historical significance to Palm Springs and California architecture. Please share this letter with the Planning Commissioners prior to their February 25, 2015 meeting. I have written two books on Palm Springs architecture (Julius Shulman: Palm Springs, Rizzoli International, 2008, and Palm Springs Weekend, Chronicle Books, 2001) and can say that these buildings, and the work of architect Hugh Kaptur, play an important role in what is now identified as Palm Springs Modernism. I am also a consultant on architectural history for the current City of Palm Springs architectural survey. I have already unequivocally recommended Tahquitz Plaza as a significant building in that survey. My resume is attached. I have written on architecture for the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Architect’s Newspaper, The Los Angeles Times, Architectural Digest, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, and other journals. I have been the architecture critic of the San Jose Mercury News since 1986, received a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and was a National Arts Journalism Fellow at Columbia University.
