The Las Vegas Strip the early years by Pam Goertler assisted by Brian Cashman El Rancho Vegas The first hotel on the Strip In the 1930’s there was no Las Vegas “Strip”. Las Vegas was a railroad town, built to house the railroad workers and their families. The clubs, casinos, stores, schools, hotels, professional offices, and railroad station were all downtown. Highway 91 (now the Strip) went from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, passing through Las Vegas. Scattered along the highway, leading into Las Vegas, were some small clubs, but they were few and far between. his new hotel. Mrs. Jessie Hunt owned the proper- As the legend goes…in 1938 Tommy Hull and ty, and Tommy began negotiations with her. Mrs. a friend were driving along highway 91. I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture. -

Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92263 Re: Tahquitz Plaza by architect Hugh Kaptur, Tahquitz Canyon and Calle El Segundo To the Planning Commission: I am writing as an architect, historian, and author of nineteen books on Modern architecture to express my support for the preservation of the Tahquitz Plaza office complex because of its historical significance to Palm Springs and California architecture. Please share this letter with the Planning Commissioners prior to their February 25, 2015 meeting. I have written two books on Palm Springs architecture (Julius Shulman: Palm Springs, Rizzoli International, 2008, and Palm Springs Weekend, Chronicle Books, 2001) and can say that these buildings, and the work of architect Hugh Kaptur, play an important role in what is now identified as Palm Springs Modernism. I am also a consultant on architectural history for the current City of Palm Springs architectural survey. I have already unequivocally recommended Tahquitz Plaza as a significant building in that survey. My resume is attached. I have written on architecture for the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Architect’s Newspaper, The Los Angeles Times, Architectural Digest, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, and other journals. I have been the architecture critic of the San Jose Mercury News since 1986, received a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and was a National Arts Journalism Fellow at Columbia University. -

Preserving Los Angeles's Googie: An Analysis of a Commercial Style, Change, and Preservation Abstract "Inspired by the imposing forms of planes, ships, and sleek futuristic technology, Googie gave Los Angeles’s commercial architecture “wings, angles, texture, color, and just about anything else that would catch the eye and lure a passing motorist.” Like its Programmatic precursor, Googie was cultivated in a vernacular commercial landscape geared towards advertisement. The style defied tradition with its glossary of dramatic angles; its ostentatious color palette; and its use of steel, chrome, and neon. Notably, it saw extensive use in the most vernacular of commercial structures, lending character to bowling alleys, motels, car washes, gas stations, and restaurants. By the 1960s Googie architecture had spread beyond the Southern California boundaries, dotting the country with corresponding roadside designs. However, by the 1980s the style’s popularity had waned, and stiff competition in the commercial landscape coupled with a pressure to maximize the profitability of prime real-estate locations, resulted in the demolition of significant Googie structures. -
