Of these 21,483 worked in Galway city. County Galway was the next most popular location (4,769), followed by Dublin city (232) and County Mayo (126). Of these 21,483 reside in Galway city and 18,712 reside in County Galway. County Mayo (1,196) and County Clare (496) were the next most popular locations for Galway city to draw workers from. Commuters to Galway: Tuam In 2016 there were 675 persons in the settlement of Tuam who commuted to Galway city and suburbs which equates to 20.6% of persons at work and living in Tuam. Of these commuters 370 are women and 305 are men. The average journey time of workers who commute from Tuam to Galway city and suburbs was 43 minutes and their average age was 40. Commuters to Galway: Athenry In 2016 there were 658 persons in the settlement of Athenry who commuted to Galway city and suburbs which equates to 34.8% of persons at work and living in Athenry. Of these commuters 359 are women and 299 are men. The average journey time of workers who commute from Athenry to Galway city and suburbs was 29 minutes and their average age was 39 Commuters to Galway: Bearna In 2016 there were 491 persons in the settlement of Bearna who commuted to Galway city and suburbs which equates to 57.2% of persons at work and living in Bearna. Of these commuters 270 are women and 221 are men. The average journey time of workers who commute from Bearna to Galway city and suburbs was 27 minutes and their average age was 45. Michael Davitt (1846-1906) Davitt, founder of the Land League, was the son of an evicted Mayo tenant. He was imprisoned for fifteen years in 1870 on charges of Fenian conspiracy in England. Released from Dartmoor prison in 1877 on ‘ticket of leave’, he returned to Ireland. He staged a mass meeting at Irishtown, Co. Mayo, on 20th April, 1879. This demonstration was called to protest against excessive rents and was attended by over 10,000. Other large meetings followed and the movement quickly spread from Mayo to Connaught and then throughout the country. The Irish National Land League was founded in Dublin on 21st October, 1879, with C. S. Parnell as its president. The objects of the Land League were 1) to reduce rack rents and 2) to obtain the ownership of the soil by its occupiers, i.e. tenant ownership. During the Land War (1879-82), Davitt wrote that the landlords were “a brood of cormorant vampires that has sucked the life blood out of the country.” The Land League was a non-violent mass movement but it used the methods of publicity, moral intimidation and boycott against landlords and land grabbers who broke the Land League code. This popular movement achieved a remarkable degree of success. Within a generation of its founding, by the early 20th century, most of the tenant farmers of Ireland had become owners of their farms and the landlord system, which had dominated Ireland for centuries, had been ended.

Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.2693 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY PETER HOWLEY, Limepark, Ardrahan, Co. Gaiway. I was born in Limepark in the parish of Peterswell on the 12th April, 18914, and was educated at Peterswell National School until I reached the age of about sixteen years. I then left school and went to work on my father's farm at Limepark about the year 1910. At that time conditions were very unsettled in my part of County Galway. Holdings were small and rents were very high There were many evictions for non-payment of rent. The landlords had little mercy on the tenants who could not afford to pay the high rents, and evictions were carried out with the assistance of the R.I.C., a most unpopular force for that reason. I remember that in the year 1909 my four brothers were working on my uncle's farm at Capard. One evening on their way home to Limepark from capard they stopped at the village of Peterswell for refreshments. On leaving Hayes's publichouse one of my brothers saw an R.I.C. man with his ear to the door in a listening attitude. My brother struck him and he ran to the barrack, which my brothers had to pass on their way home.

Answer: In 1906, from Queen’s College Galway (now NUIG), Alice Jacqueline Perry (1885-1969) became the first woman in Europe to graduate with a degree in Engineering (first class honours degree in Civil Engineering). Following her father James’ death the same year, she succeeded him temporarily as County Surveyor for Galway County Council - a post he had held since before her birth. Alice was an unsuccessful candidate when the permanent appointment was made. She still remains the only woman to have served as a County Surveyor (County Engineer) in Ireland. She died in Boston, USA, where she had been working within the Christian Science movement as a poetry editor and practitioner. In 2017 NUIG named their Engineering building in her honour. (Major Samuel Perry [1879-1945] was the only brother of Alice and her four sisters, Molly, Nettie, Agnes and Martha) 2. Where in Moycullen would you find Hangman’s Hill? Answer: The hill just behind Tullokyne school, along the esker road, is known as Cnoch an Crocadóir or Hangman’s Hill or also as Cnochán an Chrochta, the Hill of the Hanging. Local lore refers to a soldier being hung on the site. 3. David Davies OBE, retired BBC TV host and former Executive Director of the English Football Association (FA) had a Moycullen born mother, what was her name? Answer: Margaret (Madge) Morrison (1913-1999), born on the Kylebroughlan corner of the village crossroads.
