Prices are in Sterling and Payment will be debited in Sterling. All Books are normally octavo size and in original cloth binding, unless otherwise described. Minor inscriptions & private library labels have been usually been ignored.

Postage is extra and will be added to the Invoice at cost. Books will be sent by the most economical means possible, unless I am instructed to the contrary. All Books are comprehensively described and all faults detailed, (in fact any faults may be considered to be overemphasized if anything); however should any book be considered to have been wrongly described, or in any way faulty, it may be returned within 7 days of receipt, at my expense. Note: All Books ordered remain the property of Hugh Ashley Rayner, until full payment is received

The books listed below are mainly recent acquisitions and are just a part of my constantly changing stock of rare and unusual Books, Maps and Early Photographs of India, South & Central Asia. I have a modest book room; stocked with circa 6,000 Books, Maps & Early Photographs, of India and South Asia. Visitors to Bath are always most welcome to call in and browse, at almost any time (9am-9pm, 7 days a week), but please phone first, to ensure that someone will be there to welcome you.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that this catalogue, number 50, will be the last list of general Antiquarian Books on India that I will issue. With effect from the 1st April 2010, I am radically changing the nature of this business, and I will in future be expanding Pagoda Tree Press, and specializing in the publication, importation and distribution of new books on India & South Asia, with a strong bias towards the History of Photography in India and Himalayan Travel & Exploration. Although I will cease to deal in antiquarian books altogether, except for a few limited early titles relating to the History of Photography in India; I will, however, continue to stock a wide range of fine Early Photographs from India & South Asia. If there are any book titles in this list, or listed on my web site, that you wish to order; please do so before the end of April 2010, as after that time, they will no longer be available. The www.indiabooks.co.uk web site will, shortly after that date, become solely dedicated to early Indian Photography.

PAGODA TREE PRESS; NEW PUBLICATIONS AND IMPORTS

Pagoda Tree Press has been developed to publish a range of new books on the History of India, Tibet and the Himalayas; with a particular emphasis on the History of Photography in that region; and also to republish a variety of rare and unusual historical works on that region; early Guide books & Pamphlets, useful historical & reference works, together with long out of print travel writing from the Himalayan region. By taking advantage of the latest printing techniques; it is now possible to produce short print runs of some very obscure works, that would previously have been totally uneconomical to republish. It is our intention to continually add to this catalogue of works; all of which which should remain in print indefinitely, and to build up over the years a substantial back catalogue of rare books on the region. Pagoda Tree Press also distributes a range of new publications on India & Asia; specially imported from India and elsewhere. Some of these are limited quantities of otherwise out of print books.

PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEYS IN THE HIMALAYAS 1863 - 1866 by Samuel Bourne.

Edited & compiled by Hugh Rayner. Samuel Bourne was perhaps the most influential landscape and architectural photographer active in India during the Nineteenth Century, and this book collects together for the first time, the complete texts of his most important photographic writings. Most important are the four series of letters he wrote to the British Journal of Photography, which were first published between 1863 and 1870. They document his arrival in India and the 3 Himalayan Photographic Expeditions that he subsequently undertook; firstly to Kinnaur in 1863, to the Kangra Valley & Kashmir in 1864, & his six month expedition to Kulu, Spiti & Lahoul in 1866. Also included are the full texts of two of his earlier lectures: ‘On Some of the Requisites Necessary for the Production of a Good Photograph’; given by Bourne before Nottingham Photographic Society in 1860, and “The Original Fothergill Process,” first published in the B.J.P. in 1862. This material has now all been collected into one volume; complete with a catalogue of the nearly 2,200 photographs, made by Bourne in India, and provides a fascinating and rare glimpse into the life and work of a 19th century photographer in India, and is a unique and invaluable reference work for all collectors of his photographs.

This new, revised and enlarged, 3rd edition, contains an additional Bourne lecture from 1862, on the Fothergill Process; new maps and photographs, including previously unidentified photographs of him during his travels, an enlarged bibliography and other new material, including some fragments of Samuel Bourne’s own poetry. Format: A5 soft covers; 230 pages, with 45 b/w illustrations.

March 2010 15 REMINISCENCES OF THE RESIDENCIES OF THE COMMANDERS-IN-CHIEF IN INDIA. By Field Marshal SIR W. R. Birdwood. Originally privately published and printed at the Army Press Simla, 1930 This new edition is published in 2006 by Pagoda Tree Press. This slim volume of Reminiscence and Anecdote about the Residences of the Commanders-in-Chief of the Indian Army, (primarily ‘Snowdon’, in Simla,) was compiled by Field Marshal Sir William. Birdwood in 1930; just as he came to the end of his long career in India. It was privately printed for him at the Army Press in Simla and distributed just to a few friends, and for the use of his successors in office. The original is an exceeding rare document; reprinted here for the first time. He was uniquely placed to record the finer details of the history of these houses, as not only had he lived in them as Commander-in-Chief; but in his much earlier capacity, as ADC to Lord Kitchener, he had been responsible for overseeing much of the re-modelling work done on both Snowdon and Treasury Gate during the 1900’s. It provides a wealth of fascinating information both for students of Simla and Indian Army history; covering the acquisition of Snowdon by Lord Roberts in the 1870’s, and its substantial remodelling by Kitchener in the 1900’s. It documents as well, the history of other Commander-in-Chief’s houses in Calcutta & Delhi and provides much detail about the construction of the final house at New Delhi, which was undertaken in the late 1920’s by Field Marshal Birdwood himself. ISBN: 1-904289-23-1 A5 booklet. pp: 35 b/w illust. Price: £8.00

He paints a vivid picture of the events during the 1857 Mutiny at Mhow, where he was a major participant, and of the actions the following year, of the Sarun Field Force (using the Crew of HMS Pearl), in a successful containing campaign against the Mutineers. The Diary also describes the Kingdom of Oude, both before and after its annexation by the East India Company. It documents the substantial changes from the relative slackness of the East India Companies Army, to the greater professionalism of the post-Mutiny Army. This is an important document for students of Indian Military History; here published for the first time, in a Limited Edition of 250 copies, casebound, 4to. 289 pages, illustrated. ISBN 1-904289-16-9. Price: £40.00 (plus £4.63 UK postage)

IN PURSUIT OF THE PAST. The Discovery of the Life & Work of A.T.W. Penn; pioneering Photographer of South India. By Christopher Penn. In November 2000, Christopher Penn discovered an old letter crumpled up behind the top drawer of his late father’s writing bureau. It led to the discovery of a family - his own - of which had been unaware, and knowledge of his great grandfather Albert Thomas Watson Penn, who had been one of the pioneering photographers of South India. He left home before he was twelve, and by 1865, the year in which he turned sixteen, had started work as a photographer in the hill station of Ootacamund in the Nilgiri Hills; initially in the local branch of Nicholas & Co. the Madras photographic studio; which he later bought out, and established as his own business for the next 40 years. Examples of his work are now held in all the major collections of early Indian Photography. Research for this fascinating book also uncovered information on the tragic life of Penn’s son (the author’s grandfather), who, having won the DCM for valour at the Battle of Omdurman, riding in the same squadron as Lt. Winston Churchill, and having won a fortune eleven years later in the Calcutta Derby Sweepstake, died a pauper and in disgrace. Published by C.F. Penn, Worplesden 2008 1st edition.Format: A5 PB . pp:293. with b/w illustrations. ISBN: 978-0-955945502. Price: £14.50

A MAN OF THE FRONTIER Sonam Wangfel Laden La (1876 - 1936) His Life & Times in Darjeeling and Tibet. by Nicholas & Deki Rhodes. Sonam Wangfel Laden La was a unique personality in the India Tibet frontier, during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Born into a Sikkimese Lama family, long established in Darjeeling; he was initially educated in the Nyingmapa Buddhist tradition as a novice monk at Pemayangtse Monastery in Sikkim. He was then sent to Darjeeling, to be educated by Christian Jesuit priests, alongside British boys. At the same time he was living at Ghum Monastery in Darjeeling, where he also studied in the Gelugpa Buddhist tradition. After a brief period working in the Tibetan Section of the Bengal Secretariat Press, he joined the Imperial Police; the first local boy in Darjeeling to be accorded officer rank. This education in two cultures, European and Tibetan, was probably a conscious effort by the British administrators to create a man who could not only be a local community leader in Darjeeling, but who could also act as an intermediary between the the British in India and the Tibetans across the Himalayas; a man who could to help break down the barriers in Trans-himalayan communication that had existed throughout the nineteenth century. ‘A Man of the Frontier’ is newly published (2006) in Calcutta, by Mira Bose at the Library of Numismatic Studies and is solely distributed in the UK by Pagoda Tree Press. ISBN:81-901867-S-2. Size: Large 8vo. pp126, with b/w & colour illustrations. UK Price: £14.00 17 HUGH ASHLEY RAYNER. Antiquarian Bookseller. CATALOGUE 50 INDIA & THE ORIENT. POOR RELATIONS. The Making of A Eurasian Community in British India 1773-1833. by Christopher Hawes. As early as the 1830’s, Eurasians (later called Anglo-Indians) of British birth already exceeded the number of British civilians in colonial India. At the time of India’s independence they out numbered all British residents, yet there has been little historical attention to the development of this mixed-race community, the problems which it faced (social, economic and attitudinal), nor to the questions which its rise posed to British authority. Sometimes these were hypothetical. Could, for instance, a large mixed-race population of British descent cause political danger to British interests in India, as had the colonists of America? Other questions raised by a fast growing mixed-race population which identified closely with its British fathers were practical. How to educate and employ them? Were they to be treated as British or Indians? The sixty years between 1773 and 1833 determined British paramountcy in India. Those years were formative too, for British Eurasians. By the 1820’s Eurasians were an identifiable and vocal community of significant numbers, particularly in the main Presidency towns. They were valuable to the administration of government, although barred in the main from higher office. The ambition of their educated elite was to be accepted as British subjects, not to be treated as native Indian; an aspiration which was finally rejected in the 1830’s. This study of the Eurasian Community in India is the first serious work on the subject and is an invaluable overview of a previously undocumented area of British Indian History. The author, Christopher Hawes is a graduate of St. John’s College Oxford, where he read modern history. His subsequent business career in marketing, advertising and the media included 20 years as a director of an Indian company. He was awarded his doctorate in 1993 as a post graduate of the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. Poor Relations was first published by Curzon Press in 1996, and only a limited number of copies are still available. pub. Curzon 1996. 1st ed. ppxv/217. b/w illust. SURVEYING AND MAPPING IN COLONIAL SRI LANKA 1800 - 1900. By Ian J. Barrow. A study of surveying and mapping is imperative for understanding the nature of colonialism in South Asia. It also sheds light on the island’s economy, environment and politics. This book is the first comprehensive history of surveying and mapping in colonial Sri Lanka. It provides a wide-ranging account of events, policies, and individuals shaping and animating the largest government department on the island. The volume discusses the founding of the survey department in 1800 and explains why it took them more than one hundred years to publish a map of the island based on new surveys. It also highlights the linkages between the department and the island’s ecology and economy and reviews how surveying affected colonial labour practices. Published by OUP, Delhi 2008. 1st edition.
