Trip summary The trek to K2 Base Camp up the mighty Baltoro glacier is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest, passing through a savage, glittering tangle of granite spires, granitic peaks and gigantic glaciers. After flying from Islamabad to Skardu, you start your trek from the village of Askole, a brilliant splash of emerald-green in the otherwise stark landscape and gateway to some of the highest mountains in the world. You follow the route taken by expeditions for over a hundred years as they set out to conquer K2. As you head up the glacier into the heart of the Karakoram the snow-clad mountains soar high above the valley floor and each turn of the trail reveals more stupendous vistas. Cathedral Peak, Trango Towers, Masherburn and the twin summits of Broad Peak are just some of the renowned peaks that tower over the trail and make this trek such a classic. You gain altitude at a steady rate, aiding acclimatisation and helping to ensure that you can enjoy the incredible scenery. After several days of the most stunning trekking, you reach Concordia, 4,650m/15,255ft - the junction of the Baltoro Glacier and the Godwin-Austen Glacier. Clustered around this remarkable place are six peaks over 7,925m/26,000ft high including the awe-inspiring K2. For good reason this magnificent amphitheatre has become known as the ‘throne of the mountain gods’ and nowhere else on the planet will you find a more sensational setting for a campsite! Trekking out of Concordia, through a maze of moraines, you next reach the base camp of Broad Peak, 5,000m/16,450ft, where you will spend two nights, providing the best opportunity to successfully reach K2 Base Camp. Some other companies try to complete the trek from Concordia to K2 in just one day making for a very challenging and exhausting experience, but by spending the extra night at Broad Peak Base Camp you will enjoy a relatively easy hike to K2 and back with ample time to chat to the K2 climbers preparing for their attempt at conquering the ‘savage mountain’. Mountain Kingdoms started running trips to K2 Base Camp in 1991 and experience has shown us that the very best chance of achieving this goal is by having the last camp at the Broad Peak Base Camp. Trying to make it from a camp at Concordia is a tall order. It is a heck of a long way on very tiring terrain. Of course, it is more expensive to take the porters and all the kit to Broad Peak Base Camp but we feel it is well worth it. It gives you a much better chance of doing what you came to K2 for in the first place, and it gives you a night at the Broad Peak Base Camp as well. In addition, an expert local leader, working in conjunction with an experienced local trek crew, maximises the chances of a safe and successful trek. Special notes FCO Travel Advice for Pakistan We strongly recommend that you read the up-to-date Travel Advice from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO): https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/pakistan. The FCO changed their Travel Advice for Pakistan removing their “advice against all but essential travel” for Skardu, Gilgit and trekking in the Karakoram mountains. However, the FCO still advises against travel on the Karakoram Highway (KKH). We are hopeful that the FCO will downgrade this advice in the near future but, in the meantime, if the flight to or from Skardu is cancelled due to bad weather we plan to use a route that crosses that Babusar pass via Chilas and then picks up the KKH for the final 165 miles into Skardu. This is a very well-used and protected trade and transport route that our agents in Pakistan advise us is safe and secure. In these circumstances it is important that you are aware of the situation, are happy to travel and have adequate travel insurance. In such a case our public liability cover does not extend to include cover for claims arising out of war and terrorism risks.     British 1980 expedition to Baltoro Kangri Brian Hall The objective Baltoro Kangri, often referred to as the Golden Throne, is situated in the centre ofthe highest part of the Karakoram Himalaya in Pakistan. Unlike its illustrious, rocky neighbours, K2 and the Gasherbrums, Baltoro Kangri is an enormous dome ofsnow and ice capped with 5 summits, Baltoro Kangri I-V. Ofthe 5 peaks, V (7260m), IV (7230m approx.) and III (7280m), were climbed by a Tokyo University Expedition in 1963. In 1976, anotherJapanese expedition climbed Ill, Il (7220m) and I(7250m). Both expeditions used a base camp on the Duke ofAbruzzi Glacier and then climbed the mountain via the prominent col to the E of the mountain, called the Conway Saddle (6300m). Our aim was to climb Baltoro Kangri by the original]apanese route and then ski from the summit back to base camp. Ifsuccessful it would be the highest mountain in the world to be skied from its summit. The expedition would use lightweight techniques, doing away with conventional camps and fixed ropes as far as possible, and all gear and food would be carried by ourselves, using no high altitude porters or oxygen. The members, Dr Peter Alston, Keith Geddes, Ian Gray, Phil Ham, Brian Hall, Harry Rankin and]ess Stock (leader), were a mixture of climbers and skiers, a combination which would hopefully secure a successful outcome to the expedition.     AAC Publications Uli Biaho Tower (6,109m), south pillar, Speck Pakistan, Karakoram, Baltoro Muztagh On July 21, Italians Matteo Della Bordella and Luca Schiera, and Swiss Silvan Schupbach, completed a 40-year-old project by making the first ascent of the south pillar of Uli Biaho Tower. This spectacular granite column, west of the Trango Group, has captivated climbers ever since its photograph appeared in Eric Shipton's classic book of Karakoram exploration Blank on the Map. Subsequently, the remarkably few attempts, and even fewer ascents, have been misleading due to confused compass points. The tower was not attempted until 1974, the year the Baltoro region reopened after being off-limits since 1961. Three young French made a spirited attempt, approaching via steep snow and ice couloirs to reach the south pillar (they referred to it as northwest), which would give the shortest route to the summit. Pierre Béghin, Jean Frèhel, and Dominque Marquis climbed the pillar until hit by a fierce storm. At this point they estimated only 30m of aid separated them from moderate snow and mixed terrain rising ca 150m to the summit. To make the tower’s first ascent in 1979, Americans Bill Forrest, Ron Kauk, Jon Roskelley, and Kim Schmitz accessed the east pillar directly via a ca 800m, objectively dangerous couloir, overhung by large seracs and subject to the ever-present threat of rockfall. In 1988, Italians Maurizio Giordani, Rosanna Manfrini, Maurizio Venzo, and Kurt Walde climbed a far safer couloir, south of the American approach, from farther down the Trango Glacier. Traversing to the foot of the south face, they climbed the southeast buttress, right of the French attempt, to create a 600m route at 6b+ and A3.

    AAC Publications Gasherbrum I (8,086m), First Winter Ascent Asia, Pakistan, Baltoro Muztagh The Polish Winter Gasherbrum I expedition was organized by the Polish Alpine Association (PAA) and financed by the Ministry of Sports, as well as a group of commercial sponsors. The expedition was part of an important PAA program dubbed Polish Winter Himalaism 2010-2015, the goal being for the next generation of Polish mountaineers to make first winter ascents of the remaining 8,000m peaks. The expedition comprised four Poles. Agnieszka Bielecka (34) was base camp manager. Adam Bielecki (28, brother of Agnieszka) at 17 climbed Khan Tengri alone, has climbed more than 100 routes in the Tatras and Alps during summer and winter, and in 2011 summited Makalu without oxygen. Janusz Go??b (44), one of the most famous Polish alpinists, was very active in the 1990s, making the first winter ascent of Manitua and the second ascent of Extreme Dream, both on the Grandes Jorasses, a new route on the west face of the Petit Dru, the first winter ascent of Arch Wall (Troll Wall), new routes on Nalumasortoq (Greenland) and Bear’s Tooth (Alaska), a new line on the huge face of India’s Kedar Dome, but no ascents of 8,000ers. Artur Hajzer (49, expedition leader) was a partner of the legendary Jerzy Kukuczka, making new routes on Annapurna East, Manaslu, and Xixabangma, the first winter ascent of Annapurna, and more recently three other 8,000m peaks by standard routes, all without oxygen. The team was supported by two Pakistani climbers employed as high-altitude porters: Ali Sadpara and Shaheen Baig.
