Just a few years later (in 1992) we took the first ever group of trekkers across the Gondogoro La. Since then we have successfully crossed this spectacular pass over thirty times. This is an exceptional and ambitious trekking adventure, which starts out with a spectacular flight from Islamabad to the town of Skardu in Baltistan. From here, we drive to the remote village of Askole and trek via the Baltoro Glacier, passing famous peaks such as the Trango and Cathedral groups, the Lobsang Spire and mighty Masherbrum, en route to Concordia. This is one of the most spectacular locations on the planet and we have the opportunity to trek up the Godwin Austin Glacier to K2 Basecamp, before continuing on the Upper Baltoro Glacier towards Chogolisa and the 'golden throne' peak of Baltoro Kangri. -

You will see breathtaking scenery of the Karakoram mountains towering over Baltoro glacier. The journey starts with a flight from Islamabad to Skardu in Gilgit Baltistan. From the plane you will see spectacular views of Karakoram including Nanga Parbat. After several nights in Skardu we take jeep transport to the road head of the trek at Askole. Mount K2 at an altitude of 8,611m is the second highest mountain in the world. It is a steep mountain and the climbing routes are technical. The first ascent was in 1954 by an Italian xpeditione following the Abruzzi spur. The trekking route up the Baltoro glacier has superb mountain views all the way up to Concordia. On our walk we will see the Trango Towers, Muztagh Tower, Masherbrum, K2 and Broad Peak among many others. Galen Rowell described Concordia in his book as the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods”. We camp at Concordia and will see its unique panorama of 7,000m and 8,000m mountains and impressive views of K2. Mitre Peak is the prominent peak near Concordia. Its length is about 500 km and this region has the most glaciers in the world outside the polar regions. Five of the fourteen 8,000 meters peaks exist on the earth, are in this range. With its altitude and hardness, the Karakorum is much less inhabited than the Himalayan mountain range is. European explorers first arrived in the early 19th century and later British surveyors in 1856. The Muztagh Pass was crossed in 1887 by an expedition headed by Colonel Francis Younghusband, and the valleys above the Hunza River were explored in 1892 by General Sir George K. Cockerill. In the period of 1910 and 1920 there were several explorations to get more knowledge on the region's geography. The Karakorum and the Himalayas are important for Earth research for some reasons. They are one of the world's most geologically active areas, they are in the area where two continents, Asia and the Indian subcontinent, connect. In addition, they are important for the study of tectonic plates due to the collision of the Eurasian and Indian plates. Mountain glaciers serve as indicators of -

Uli Biaho Trango Towers Group, Baltoro Muztagh, Pakistan the WOUNDED, but Surviving, Tiny Taxi Entered the Koritko Driveway in Rawalpindi Close to Midnight
AAC Publications The Obvious Line: Uli Biaho Trango Towers Group, Baltoro Muztagh, Pakistan THE WOUNDED, BUT surviving, tiny taxi entered the Koritko driveway in Rawalpindi close to midnight. Kim Schmitz, a tall, lean mountain guide from Lake Tahoe and I had hardly extricated ourselves before Andy, our host, slammed a cold Heineken into our hands and welcomed us to Pakistan. Hugs and kisses from Kathy, his wife, and their kids, confirmed the invitation. As we had planned months before, our teammates, Bill Forrest, owner of Forrest Mountaineering in Denver, and Ron Kauk, one of America’s top rock climbers, had already arrived. Our enjoyment was only temporary. For the next seven days, we turned Rawalpindi inside out to accomplish the numerous tasks each expedition must do before departing for its objective. Our Western impatience seemed a punishment as each of our assigned tasks took hours or days longer than necessary. Six of us boarded the crowded, camouflaged C-130 army transport prop-jet at the Islamabad airport just as the sun, a shimmering orange orb, slowly ascended, heating the already oily, early morning air. In addition to the four climbers, Kerry Koritko, Andy’s fifteen year old son and Captain Jubran Afzal, our proud, but competent liaison officer, would accompany the expedition to Base Camp. Skardu, breezy with clear skies, has changed little over the centuries. The single jeep track and copper telegraph line are the only indicators of subtle modernization. Along with three other expeditions, our team jeeped through downtown Skardu, a four-minute ride, and up the narrow, rocky road to our hotel.
