Notes from the Chapter Chair RETIRED PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION, INC. CENTRAL NEW YORK CHAPTER NEWS & NOTES APRIL, 2019 NOTES FROM THE CHAPTER CHAIR If you missed our Holiday Party on December 3RD, you missed a good time. Over 100 in attendance, great guitar music and singing by Mohawk Valley Chapter member, LINDA LADUC and lots of giveaways. I want to thank our Steering Commit- tee for all of their help in preparing for this event and for their extensive help during the party itself. We couldn’t have done this without all of their help and help from members JUDY BARTON, TERI RISLEY, and Mohawk Valley Chap- ter member, PAT JORDAN for their help in selling raffle tickets. Thank you, everyone! Approximately 15 pounds of travel size personal toiletries were collected for FRANCIS HOUSE, a home in Syracuse for the terminally ill. We also collected about five pounds of regular sized toiletries which were given to VERA HOUSE, which, in part, is a shelter for those suffering from domestic violence. We also collected 30 pairs of glasses which will be donated so new glasses can be made for those who can’t oth- erwise afford them. Each meeting we have donation jars on the tables. December is usually a food pantry and this year we collected $241 and distributed a matching amount to each food pantry – ST. LUCY’S (Onondaga County), CALVARY FOOD PANTRY (Cayuga County), FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (Oswego County) and PREBLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH (upper Cortland County). Several of these food pan- tries are supported exclusively by donations. Thank you for your donations! Our 50/50 raffle of $121 was won by MICHAELE WENDELL. Our Money Tree (consisting of cash and lottery tickets), with a value of $100 - and a small artificial tree, was won by PETER RUSZCZAK. Many individuals and companies donated either gift baskets, items for gift baskets, gift certificates or door prizes. We want to acknowl- edge and thank all of them for their generosity: ALL MIXED UP, AVICOLLI’S RESTAURANT, CANALE’S RESTAURANT, CAROL BRAUND, COLEMAN’S RESTAURANT, COPPERTOP RESTAURANT, DAWN BENNETT, DIANE DWIRE, DINOSAUR BAR-B-QUE, JUST HAIR & SALON, LASCA’S RESTAURANT, LILIE WELYCH, MAN IN THE MOON CANDIES, MARY & PETE KLEMENTOWSKI, MARY NORTON, MIKE RODDA, MOTHER’S CUPBOARD RESTAURANT, NICHOLS GROCERY, ORIGINAL ITALIAN PIZZA (OIP), ROSE D’AGOSTINO, SACRED MEL- ODY GIFTS, SYRACUSE METS BASEBALL, TULLY’S RESTAURANT, WITTY WICKS CANDLES. We cer- tainly couldn’t have done it without all of this help. The lucky recipients of our many gift baskets were: DAWN BENNETT, ROBIN BOUCHARD, SALLY GRAY, BRENDA HOLLIDAY, DONNA HOLLIDAY, LEIGH HUNT, PAT JORDAN, CHET JUSTIAN, PAUL LEISE, ANDREA LOTEMPIO, BOBBI MACDONALD, BILLY PIERCE, TERI RISLEY, B. MICHAEL RODDA, JO ANN ROSS, TOM SMITH, ANN WALTER, TOM WALTER, MARIA WEDE, ANN WOLSLEY. We also had about 50 door prizes that were given away consisting of gift cards, gift certificates, candy and other items. Notes From The Chapter Chair, (Continued on Page 2) PAGE 2 CENTRAL NEW YORK CHAPTER NEWS & NOTES APRIL 2019 Notes From The Chapter Chair, (Continued from Page 1) As a member suggested a while ago, TANIA ANDERSON, Chief Executive Officer from ARISE AT THE FARM will be the guest speaker at our April meeting. ARISE is an accessible, inclusive recreation center located on a 77-acre working horse farm in Chittenango, NY, focused on the needs and interests of in- dividuals with disabilities in the Central New York region. Perhaps you know of someone who could use a referral. In December we were supposed to have someone from CLEAR CAPTIONS, a phone for those hearing im- paired, but apparently, there was a mix up in communication. If you did come to the December meeting to speak with the representative and to see this demonstrated, I apologize for the inconvenience. If you are still interested, I’m going to ask you to either call or e-mail JAMES SKJEVELAND who is with Sprint Captioned Telephone. This is a free service that makes it easy for those with hearing loss to stay in touch. Contact Jim at [email protected] or 317-500-6200 or 410-953-7418. If he has enough interest, he will come to our April meeting. We again will be collecting glasses or lens from eyeglasses. They can be regular glasses or sunglasses (prescription). No cases. Stay tuned for a new and different bus trip later this year. Also, advance notice of two potential trips for 2020. Ireland/Scotland in May 2020 and Alaska land and cruise in July or August 2020. We will have information out as soon as it is available but if you don’t want to be left out, let me know of your interest. When filling out your reservation form for our luncheons (or any activity), please be sure to include ALL names. If you are the member, and your spouse is attending, please write their name down too. Also, please write all guest names on the reservation form. Reservations will be returned if they don’t have the information. In December three envelopes arrived not sealed. Fortunately, checks and res- ervation forms were still enclosed. Please make sure your envelopes are sealed. Also, make sure you send in your reservation in plenty of time before the deadline. Members receive information on the luncheons with at least one month notice … plenty of time to get reservations in on time. Deadlines are in place because the venue needs to know how many people to expect and how much food to buy. To ensure that we have a place to hold our luncheons, we must adhere to their rules. In December I had about a dozen people wanting to make a reservation after the deadline. Unfortunately, they had to be turned away. If there are any members out there who need a ride to and from our Membership Meetings, please let me know. We will try and find someone in your area to provide transportation. Those of you who will be coming to our April Membership Meeting, what a wonderful opportunity to offer to transport a neighbor who would not otherwise be able to attend and make a new friend in the process. Call me at 315-437-7464 or e-mail at [email protected]. We do have a couple of people who are regularly getting rides with other members. RPEA will again have a booth at the NEW YORK STATE FAIR, AUGUST 21- SEPTEMBER 1, 2019. I will start accepting volunteers after April 1ST when a few more details have been worked out. Those who have volunteered in the past will receive an e-mail with information. Others who are interested, let me know and I’ll add you to the list. This is a great opportunity to meet lots of other people and share why you are a member of RPEA. RPEA’s 50TH Anniversary is this year and we will be cele- brating at the Fair and throughout this year. Keep an eye out for these events. Ideas for speakers or for our donation jars (usually not-for-profits) can be put in our suggestion box at our meetings. We like donations that benefit our whole membership area (Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego and upper Cortland Counties) or a broad spectrum of it. Ideas for programs are also welcome. RETIRED PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION, INC. CENTRAL NEW YORK CHAPTER NEWS & NOTES APRIL, 2018 NOTES FROM THE CHAPTER CHAIR The Chapter held a Holiday Party on December 4TH with 111 in attendance. I think everyone enjoyed our entertainment of EDDIE FAGAN with a combination of Holiday music, old time favorites and sing-alongs. I want to thank our Steering Committee (as well as several husbands) for their help in preparing for this event and for their extensive help during the party itself. We couldn’t have done it without everyone helping! Plus, a thank you to members JUDY BARTON, TERI RISLEY and LILLIE WELYCH for their help in selling our raffle tickets. We have donation jars on tables at each of our meetings. In December we collected for a local food pantry- St. Lucy’s Church in Syracuse, NY. This pantry serves some of the poorest in our community. We have a Money Tree for our Holiday Party consisting of cash and lottery tickets with a value of $100 – plus a small artificial tree with whatever decorations are on it. We persevered through a pandemic and we could not have done it without the unwavering commitment from our Sport Management faculty and staff, the understanding and flexibility of our students, the guidance from Falk College and Syracuse University leadership, and the loyal support of our alumni and advisory council members. The locker room renovation was made possible via a substantial leadership gift from James C. Metzger ’83. The renovation included the installation of 48 new lockers, a remodel of the bathroom and shower area, and new carpeting and flooring. Hollman, Inc., a leading manufacturer of collegiate lockers, designed and installed the new custom lockers, constructed specifically for use with lacrosse as they feature space to hold multiple helmets, sticks and are equipped with a phone charging station and cushions for comfort. Milburn Flooring oversaw the installation of the new flooring. In addition to his profound gift, Metzger also led a matching gift campaign for alumni of the program to have one of the lockers named in their honor.
