A's News Clips, Thursday, March 3, 2011 A's Outfielder Coco Crisp
A’s News Clips, Thursday, March 3, 2011 A's outfielder Coco Crisp arrested on suspicion of DUI By Joe Stiglich Oakland Tribune A's center fielder Coco Crisp was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday morning, according to an A's news release. Crisp was detained and taken to City of Scottsdale Jail before being released Wednesday morning. He showed up to Phoenix Municipal Stadium on time to join the team for pre-game drills and was in uniform -- but not in the lineup -- for a game against the Cleveland Indians. Crisp declined to comment when asked about the situation, saying he would address the media "in due time." "The A's are aware of the situation and take such matters seriously," the A's statement read. "The team and Coco will have no further comment until further details are available." Crisp, 31, is in his second season with the A's and is slated to play center field and be the leadoff hitter. Ironically, the A's held a security meeting with Major League Baseball officials before taking the field Wednesday. A message that is stressed in the annual meeting is having awareness of the off-field dangers that exist for professional athletes. Crisp signed with the A's as a free agent in December 2009. He hit .279 with eight homers and 38 RBIs last season but played in just 75 games because of a fractured pinkie and strained rib cage muscle. Crisp posts frequently on his Twitter account and often makes reference to his nighttime socializing. -

Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again?
Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. ARTICLES It’s Not About the Money: THE ROLE OF PREFERENCES, COGNITIVE BIASES, AND HEURISTICS AMONG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES Michael A. McCann† I. INTRODUCTION Professional athletes are often regarded as selfish, greedy, and out-of-touch with regular people. They hire agents who are vilified for negotiating employment contracts that occasionally yield compensation in excess of national gross domestic products.1 Professional athletes are thus commonly assumed to most value economic remuneration, rather than the “love of the game” or some other intangible, romanticized inclination. Lending credibility to this intuition is the rational actor model; a law and economic precept which presupposes that when individuals are presented with a set of choices, they rationally weigh costs and benefits, and select the course of † Assistant Professor of Law, Mississippi College School of Law; LL.M., Harvard Law School; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law; B.A., Georgetown University. SHOULD YANKEE LETTER STAY PRIVATE? | Page 1
SHOULD YANKEE LETTER STAY PRIVATE? | Page 1 SHOULD YANKEE LETTER STAY PRIVATE? By: Jack Greiner on December 16, 2020 on graydon.law The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is considering whether a letter from Rob Manfred to New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman should be sealed. The letter was part of a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York filed by fantasy baseball players who contended that the league and the teams should be liable for the losses of those who bet on games that may have been tainted by electronic sign-stealing. The trial court threw out the lawsuit, but before it did, it ruled the letter was irrelevant. But the trial court ruled that the letter could be released to the public. And the Yankees are not happy about it, evidenced by their suit in the Second Circuit. The Yankees argue that because the court ruled the letter irrelevant, it’s none of the public’s business. The fantasy players argued that Manfred’s letter, which concerned a 2015 incident where MLB fined Boston for illegally using an Apple watch to relay signs to players. In the fantasy players’ view, the letter showed that MLB knew the cheating was occurring, didn’t stop it and let bettors to wager money without knowing the results were tainted. We’ll see if the Yankees have any success with this. But they are confusing two concepts. While the letter may be irrelevant for purposes of the lawsuit, that ruling doesn’t put it off limits to the public. -
