Studies were conducted for a period of 6 months Accepted: 26 August 2018 from July to December 2016. Focus group discussions (FGD), questionnaire interviews (QI) and key informant interviews (KII) were done to collect appropriate data from the local fishers and resource persons. A total of 62 species of fish and shellfish from 23 families were found in the river and 9 species disappeared in last 10 years. The species availability status was Keywords remarked in three categories and obtained as 14 species were commonly available, 28 species were moderately available and 20 species were rarely available. The highest percentage of Aquaculture Biodiversity fishes was catfishes (24.19%). There was a gradual reduction in the species diversity from Fishes and shellfishes previous 71 species to present 62 species with 12.68% declined by last 10 years. -

The dependence on advertising revenues is supposed to ensure financial and therefore political independence. Such market-driven media, however, are inadequate in fulfilling the goal of democracy because they show less interest in reporting the causes of the poor and other disadvantaged groups. An alternative model proposed is that of a partisan media system in a pluralistic market, affording a diversity of political views including those of marginalised groups. Although conceptually different, the partisan and the commercial models of the news media are known to co-exist in many societies. -

Read Full License Page 1/24 Abstract Oil spillage is one of the common pollution events of global water-soil ecosystems. A comprehensive investigation on heavy metals pollution of surface water and sediments was conducted after oil spill incident in Sela River and its tributaries of the Sundarbans mangrove forest ecosystems, Bangladesh. Water and sediment samples were collected from the preselected sampling points in Sela River, and the elemental (Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Fe, As, Hg, Mn, Zn, Ca, Mg, Na, and K) analysis was done using atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). This study revealed that the descending order for the average concentration of the studied elements were found to be Mg > Co > Na > Ni > K > Ca > Pb > Fe > Mn > Cr > Cd > Zn > Cu respectively, while As and Hg in water samples were found to be below detection limit (BDL). However, some of the toxic elements in the Sela River water samples were exceeded the permissible limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO) with a descending order of Co > Cd > Pb > Ni respectively. -

11 2013 Discussion Paper Series Salinity Progression at Khulna: Anthropogenic or Climate Change Induced? M. Rashed Jalal, M. Shahjahan Mondal, M. Shah Alam Khan, Uthpal Kumar, Rezaur Rahman and Hamidul Huq Surface water salinity, being accentuated by the reduction in the dry season upland flows, now reaches as far as Khulna – a coastal city of Bangladesh highly exposed to climate change impacts. The projected sea level rise due to climate change would further aggravate the situation with the probability of increased spatial coverage and temporal duration of salinity. Amidst the relative lack of studies attributing to causes of salinity intrusion, this study analytically assesses the role of regional anthropogenic interventions on one hand and global climate change induced sea level rise on the other as the causes of salinity progression in Khulna. Analysis of the long-term trends in tidal water level, upland flow and river water salinity, indicates that regional human interventions, both in and outside the country, have contributed more in hydro- morphological changes in the region than the climate change induced sea level rise leading to salinity intrusion in Khulna. This is one of a series of Discussion Papers from the Peri Urban Project of SaciWATERs. About the authors: Mohammad Rashed Jalal is a graduate student at the Institute of Water and Flood Management of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka. Mr. Jalal work as a Research Assistant of the Peri-Urban Water Security Project. Email: [email protected] 20 Abstract 21 Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) or river shad is an anadromous fish species widely distributed in 22 the North Indian Ocean, mainly in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Hilsa is the national fish of 23 Bangladesh and it contributes 10% of the total fish production of the country, with a market 24 value of $1.74 billion. Hilsa also holds a very important place in the economics of West 25 Bengal of India with 12.5% of the catch and also tops the marine capture in Myanmar. 26 During the last two decades Hilsa production from inland waters has been stable, whereas 27 marine yields in the BoB increased substantially. -

UNIT – I PHYSIOGRAPHIC DIVISIONS OF INDIA Geological Structure 1. THE ARCHAEAN FORMATIONS (PRE-CAMBRIAN) The Archaean Era is also known as the Precambrian Period. The division of geologic time scale from the formation of the Earth (about 4.6 billion years ago) to the beginning of the Cambrian Period of the Paleozoic Era (about 570 million years ago}. The Precambrian time constitutes about 86.7% of the Earth's history. The term 'Archaean', introduced by J.D. Dana in 1782, refers to the oldest rocks of the Earth's crust. The oldest known rocks of the Earth, the evolutionary atmosphere, the first chemosynthesis, the first photosynthesis, the life-supporting atmosphere and the Earth's modem atmosphere, were developed during the Precambrian Era (Archaean and Protozoic). Rocks of the Archaean System are devoid of any form of life. The Archaean rocks are all azoic or non fossiliferous. They are thoroughly crystalline, extremely contorted and faulted, and practically devoid of any sediment. They are largely intruded by plutonic intrusions and generally have a well-defined foliated structure. These rocks are known as the basement complex or fundamental gneisses. Cover two-thirds of Peninsular India. In the Peninsular region, the Archaean rocks are known to be of three well-defined types: a) The Bengal Gneiss occurs in the Eastern Ghats, Orissa (known as Khodoliles after Khond tribes in Koraput and Bolangir districts), stretching over Manbhum and Hazaribagh districts of Jharkhand, Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh and Salem district of Tamil Nadu. Occur in the Son Valley, Meghalaya Plateau and Mikir HiUs. Thinly foliated. -

Khayrul Hasan Accepted: 21-04-2021 Nayan and Saleha Jasmine Afia Zinat Mphil research fellow, Abstract Department of Fisheries, In the present study, phytoplankton community structure in relation to hydrological parameters were University of Rajshahi, studied based on three seasons over a period of 12 months from March 2020 to February 2021 in the Rajshahi, Bangladesh Pasur river estuary, Bangladesh. Water quality parameters namely water temperature, DO, pH, alkalinity, TDS and Salinity were determined between 23.05 to 32 °C, 4.93 to 8.78 mg/L, 7.12 to 7.99, 109 to 175 Md. Abu Sayed Jewel Professor, Department of mg/L and 6.20 to 14.68 ppt respectively. Concentrations of nutrients viz. nitrate (0.05 to 1.02 mg/L) and Fisheries, University of phosphate (0.03 to 0.85 mg/L) also fluctuated seasonally. A total 68 species of phytoplankton belonging Rajshahi, Bangladesh to 42 genera were identified with 40 belong to the class Bacillariophyceae, 12 to Dinophyceae, 8 to Cyanophyceae, 6 to Chlorophyceae and 2 to Euglenophyceae. Relatively higher total cell density of Bithy Khatun phytoplankton was observed during post-monsoon season (48.204 × 103 cells/L) and lower during Department of Fisheries, monsoon season (37.301 × 103 cells/L). -
