The speaker asks to be let into every aspect of their lover’s life by listing the different mundane, everyday objects they want to replace. As well as asking to be needed and adored by their lover, the speaker demonstrates their devotion to their lover and the consistency of their affection. The exact relationship between the speaker and the object of their affection is unknown, but it is clear that the speaker wants to be closer to the person they are addressing. The poem is full of simplistic language, word play, and innuendo. Synopsis ● The speaker is talking directly to an unknown subject and we never hear their response to the speaker ● The speaker asks their lover if they will “let” them take the place of various everyday objects in their life ● The speaker makes it clear that their lover is in control ● The only thing the speaker desires is to belong to their lover ● The list of mundane objects continues as the speaker makes it clear that they want to make their lover’s life better and be with them everywhere ● The final stanza finishes with a grander, more metaphysical (deep) image than the mundane objects previously used to show the extent of the speaker’s devotion ● The speaker concludes by clarifying they want no one else other than the lover they are addressing in this poem Context John Cooper Clarke (1949 - present) John Cooper Clarke was born in Salford, Lancashire, in the north of England. -

A city with an atmosphere permeating with the smell of hatred and fear, security checkpoints marred the entrance to the city centre, while bombings and shootings were commonplace. At Inight the only people that dared to walk the city’s streets were the one’s that enforced the curfews and the ones that broke them— punks. It wasn’t London and it wasn’t New York. They weren’t the only cities to carve out their stake in the punk rock world. Welcome to Belfast, a city where punk rock came at a time when it really made sense. In Northern Ireland, punk rock was never simply a fashion piece to be gawked at. Punk rock came to Belfast at a time of Troubles, a time when the city was more comparable to a warzone than a Western metropolis. It came at a time of blown out buildings, shootings, tense security, intimidation, curfews, and hate. “It was a scary place to be, in the city centre at night,” said Aidan Murtagh of Protex. “People stayed in their own areas where they felt safe. The only people about town at nights were British army, police and punks. These tensions probably added to the way the music was played and performed by many of the bands.” Until the relatively recent release of the Good Vibrations movie, Northern Irish punk had largely been pushed to the background as writers and filmmakers rushed to document the rise of punk in cities like New ork,Y London and L.A. -

We’ve got a good selection of musical acts – the highly tipped Dublin songwriter Anderson who became famous for selling his album door-to-door, arrives for a solo show; Cork-born songwriter Mick Flannery presents his new album in another solo gig and we’ve opened up the auditorium for some tribute shows like Live Forever and Roadhouse Doors to give a more concert-type feel, so check these out on our brochure. Legendary Manchester poet John Cooper Clarke comes to visit us on May 4th; we have theatre with ‘The Corner Boys’, God Bless The Child’ and Brendan Balfe reminisces about the golden days of Irish radio in early June. Summer is a time for the kids and again we have a series of arts workshops and classes running over the summer months to keep them all occupied. Corey's Top 10 2014 Concerts As 2014 comes to a close I post my top concerts for the year about to end. I Guess I Made It, (borrowing the great Poco tune title) barely. Unlike the past year I did get one nice CD, Belly of the Beast (more on that later) and I finally got around to digitizing my Magical Mystery Tour LP into iTunes. I continue to enjoy my self-created iTunes Radio station, aptly titled, A Good Feelin' To Know. I continue to program as it plays deep cuts that I would only hear on the WNEW_FM 102.7 station that helped me finetune my musical tastes (Thank you Mr. Fornatale.). Interestingly, family visitations hindered any show close to Poco or Richie Furay this year. 2015 perhaps? 1) I can certainly recall some great multi-acts shows but this year included some the best. Going back to the two 1976 Stills-Young Band shows opened by Poco preceding by a late winter '76 show that had Peter Frampton opening for the Faces, John Sebastian preceding “Fab Four” Poco then Loggins & Messina, and then The Outlaws opening followed by Poco and The Doobies Brothers, and finally Hendrix opening for The Monkees in 1967, I just cannot think of shows where the results of the pairing so matched the promise. It starts with Jackson Browne OPENING for John Fogerty at Jones Beach. Jackson mixed faves and deep cuts. My highlight was Runnin' On Empty. Interestingly for those who recall his original steel flavored version, Jackson arranged Take It Easy so that if Glenn Frey jumped out, he'd not miss a beat.
