The traffic survey of Mortimer Lewis Drive was conducted in late 2011 and the results were presented to the meet- ing by Mr. Gill. He outlined plans for a footpath on the northern side of Mortimer Lewis Drive.

Mrs. Flint said residents have raised many complaints over the years about the lack of footpaths in their suburb, with residents of all ages having to walk on the road in all weather conditions, risking their safety and security.

Attendees advised Tony Gill of a number of road design faults and drainage prob- lems including flooding in Bibb Place. They also highlighted a ‖blind curve‖ at a section of Mortimer Lewis Drive creating serious driveway exit safety problems. Speeding and ―hooning‖ were also com- mon in Mortimer Lewis Drive, according to some residents.

Mrs. Flint said residents also pointed to the need for a "No Through Road‖ sign for De Little Circuit, a ―One Way‖ sign for John Young Crescent and ―No Right Turn‖ sign for the southern end of Morti- mer Lewis Drive onto the Tuggeranong Parkway. ―A footpath for De Little Circuit and John Young Crescent was also raised and discussed,‖ she said.

when turning at intersections. This means that any driver who fails to give way to a pedestrian is guilty of an of- fence.

In 2010 there were 47 pedestrian colli- sions in the ACT, and an unknown num- ber of cases where pedestrians man- aged to avoid drivers who failed to give way to them. Ten of these people were admitted to hospital, and another 31re- ceived medical treatment.

Based on Ms Burch's advice, you might expect that the ACT Police issued more than 47 traffic infringement notices for failing to give way to pedestrians. They actually issued only 33.

Drivers who fail to give way to pedestri- ans are highly unlikely to be booked, provided the pedestrians either jump out of the way or are not injured seriously enough to need medical treatment.

―The southside landslide proves that members love it in the south. MPs have voted with their feet, and their staff as well.‖

―However, there are tens of thousands of other people who choose to live in the Canberra electorate and, with that in mind, I am launching the 'South Side Rocks' campaign—an initiative to open your mind to the benefits of life in the south, via tales from the locals them- selves,‖ Ms Brodtmann said.

―Asking MPs why they live where they do can be pretty predictable stuff, but if you talk to the people of Canberra you will really get to know why the south side rocks.

So I urge all southsiders to write to me. Tell me why you choose to live in the southern suburbs and where you like to go.

―Southside residents: take a stand. We cannot let those in the north delude themselves into thinking they have got it better than we do.‖

―I urge all members living on the south to stay vigilant. Do not be sucked in by the member for Fraser's voodoo. Stay south and prosper,‖ she concluded.

Cost of living statement

Shadow Treasurer and Member for Brindabella, Brendan Smyth, will intro- duce a Bill into the Assembly requiring the ACT Government to include a cost of living statement in the annual ACT Budget.

Mr Smyth said Canberrans need to be aware, not only of the decisions which are contained in the annual Budget, but of the implications of those decisions on individuals and families and their costs of living.

―It is important that governments are as open and accountable to their electorate as possible, and the provision of an analysis of the cost of living effects of the annual Budget will provide even greater transparency of each government‘s deci- sions on fiscal policy,‖ Mr Smyth said.
