Its primary aim is to identify taboos which are observed in Akwamu traditional society and the philosophical explanations underpinning the practice of these taboos. It is also to examine how taboos affect ethical values in the daily lives of the people and their relevance in the maintenance of social order in contemporary Akwamu traditional society. A qualitative design and phenomenological approach were used in this study. The main instruments used in gathering relevant data for the study were interview, observation and relevant information from documentary sources. In all, forty respondents comprising family heads, chiefs, queen mothers, Christians and Muslims were purposively selected for the study based on their knowledge in Akwamu traditional philosophy and cultural practices. The key findings of the study showed that the practice of taboos among the people of Akwamu remains very strong because it reinforces the communal values of solidarity, identity and unity among the people. The study also disclosed that taboos have not been completely wiped out but have rather been either modified or toned down because of the significant roles they play in the preservation of lives among the people of Akwamu in contemporary times. The study recommended among other things that a concerted effort should be put in place by stakeholders, both government and all religious functionaries to increase people’s awareness of the relevance of taboos in contemporary Akwamu traditional society. The underlying theme that guided the conduct of this study was to reconstruct the lifeways of the past inhabitants of Obosomase using predominantly archaeologically sourced data. It was also to ascertain the existence or absence of continuity in the archeological record on the one hand and between the past and present-day inhabitants of Obosomase on the other. Datable archaeological materials clearly indicate that the excavated area of the site was occupied shortly after 1750 and continued to be occupied until the 20th century.

Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of national resources and government services, including the allocation of government funds among various regions, districts and other sub-national populations to education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users, especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, with district-level analytical reports based on the 2010 PHC data to facilitate their planning and decision-making. The District Analytical Report for the Akwapim South District is one of the 216 district census reports aimed at making data available to planners and decision makers at the district level. In addition to presenting the district profile, the report discusses the social and economic dimensions of demographic variables and their implications for policy formulation, planning and interventions. The conclusions and recommendations drawn from the district report are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence-based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programmes.

Art, especially the visual art can be said to be the only way of bringing out the philosophies and concepts of given society into physical form. Usually, it is these philosophies and concepts that become the norms and ethics which keep the society together. It can also help to educate people about the mindset of those who made it and the use it was intended for. Similarly, it can be used to teach others in the society to make art forms not just for its aesthetics but also as a way of preserving the culture of the people. Thus it could be realised that knowing the socio-cultural, educational as well as the philosophical importance of a particular work of art helps to tell others about the work, how it was made and what it is intended for. This helps in preserving the culture of a particular society for subsequent generations. It also helps the individuals in the society to have a common cultural identity. The quest by individual societies for a cultural identity is not just to prove to the world that, they are the most important but rather to have a stage of development that would make them fit into the dynamism of the ever growing world. Perhaps it is in line with the ever popular saying that “one needs to know where he is coming from to enable him know his ultimate destination”. This saying can also be linked to the Igbo proverb that “Onye na eweghi ihe arimama di ka onye nwuru anwu”, literally meaning “a person or people with no identity are as well as dead”.

This communal meal is celebrated during the main festivals of the people of Worawora namely the Akwntutenten, yam and rice festivals. The Akwntutenten, festival has however, become the major festival of the people of Worawora. The symbolic ritual meal is very significant since it is perceived as a means by which conflict resolution and reconciliation is achieved. This perception explains the importance attached to the eating of the Otor meal during their festivals which attract a large number of their citizens. The study investigated the religious and philosophical perception of mashed yams Otor in order to present to policy makers an alternative strategy for conflict resolution and reconciliation in African communities.

The civic infrastructure used as the building blocks of survey sampling in developed countries are mostly absent in rural Africa. The purpose of the study described in this paper was to pilot an innovative and cost-effective approach to household sampling designed to generate probability samples representative of the socio-economic diversity of the small town of Berekuso, in the Eastern Region of Ghana, without relying on existing census data, household registers, or a regular layout of roads and dwellings. Utilizing Google Earth images and a Graphical Information System (GIS) map of Berekuso, sampling units were defined as 15-degree wedge-shaped sectors radiating from the center of the original township. All households within randomly selected sectors were surveyed, and based on a household classification scheme, each household type was identified. Additional sectors were randomly selected and surveyed in sequence until no new household types were identified – a notion recognized by laboratory scientists as an ‘end point’.

NKRUMAH4 A comparative cross-sectional survey was undertaken in two populations, urban and rural, in southern Ghana to assess the impact ofurbanization on theprevalence ofmalaria parasitaemia and antibodies. At the same time, a survey ofantimalarial practices was con- ducted on sample populations in the two communities. The results showed a low parasite rate (1.6%o) and correspondingly low titres ofmalaria antibodies in a significantproportion ofthe urban community, particularly in children less than IOyears old. This was associated with widespread use in the urban community of antimalarial drugs, particularly chloro- quine, as prophylaxis. The parasite rate in the rural community was 22%, and 97%0o of the sample population over 1 -year of age had antibodies against Plasmodium falciparum. These results demonstrate that a substantial proportion of urban children are growing up with little exposure to malaria, even in a region considered endemic for malaria. The implications of these findings are discussed.
