  • 1642 and 1649 by Iroquois Natives
Canadian Martyrs Church officially blessed Half a country away, Midland, Ont., there is a shrine dedicated to eight Canadian Jesuit Martyrs killed between 1642 and 1649 by Iroquois natives. Now a new church at 5771 Granville Ave. in Richmond has been dedicated to the memory of Sts. Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brebeuf, Charles Garnier, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Noel Chabanel, John La Lande and Rene Goupil, Jesuit pioneering missionaries who brought the Gospel to the Huron and Iroquois in Canada and the U.S. All were priests except the Jesuit associates Rene Goupil, who was a surgeon, and John La Lande. They were beautified by Pope Pius XI on June 21, 1925, and canonized by the same Pontiff five years later. On March 2, nearly 1,000 jubilant parishioners crowded into the new church while an overflow audience watched the dedication Mass via a closed-circuit broadcast in the parish hall. Archbishop Adam Exner, OMI, exhorted Canadian Martyrs’parishioners to adhere to their sainted patrons’ legacy of “determination, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to building up the Kingdom of God here on earth.” The house, he said, is a witness of their faith to all who look upon it. “The parishioners of this parish, most of them, have come from faraway countries and have seen the need to build a new parish. After much searching, the land and the church were bought. Many of you were here for the blessing of the first church. Soon after, it became clear that the church was simply too small and that a new and larger church and parish facilities were needed.

Alfie Lambe 1932 - 1959 From humble beginnings Alphonsus Lambe was born in Tullamore, County Offaly on June 24th 1932. Alfie, as he was known, entered the Novitiate of the Irish Christian Brothers on September 8th, 1948. However he suffered fainting attacks and it was decided that he should return to his family in Tullamore for a time to see if he could build up his strength. Alfie was heartbroken. However, one evening in 1950, his brother Jack invited him to a meeting of the Legion of Mary. Alfie never looked back, eventually offering his services to the headquarters (the ‘Concilium’) of the Legion of Mary. On 11th February 1953, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Alfie received a letter from Concilium inviting him to work as a Legion envoy in South America. Although his mother would miss him dearly, Alfie accepted. Kathleen, Joe, Alfie & Mary Lambe 1941 “My mother, in replying to my letter in which I told her the news, says that she does not like to see me going so far away, but that I must go because that Alfie, The Abbot of Roscrea and is what Our Lady wants. She reminds me that Our Seamus prior to departure to South America, July 1953 Blessed Lady’s wishes must always come first.” Late on 15th July 1953, Alfie boarded a plane to Colombia. Within 6 months he had “I tell them that my mastered the Spanish language and went on native language is the to work in the countries of Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Brazil.

Numbering over 1,172,000, Indigenous peoples represent approximately 3.8 per cent of the total Canadian population and speak 50 traditional languages. Of the three Indigenous groups in Canada, First Nations people have the largest population (698,025), followed by the Métis (389,780), and the Inuit (50,480). Approximately 54 per cent of Indigenous people live in the country's major metropolitan centres; the rest live in smaller communities in other parts of their traditional territories. Approximately 25 per cent of all Indigenous peoples in Canada identify themselves as Catholic, and they are found in every diocese across the country.1 The basic organizational structure of the Catholic Church is diocesan. Each diocese, under its own Bishop, is responsible for its own pastoral outreach and ministry, and each diocese is the essential and primary pastoral agent in the lives of all Catholics, including Indigenous peoples. It is the local Bishop who knows best the needs and situation of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis who may be in his diocese. In addition to the outreach and pastoral ministry by the local diocese, many Canadian Catholic religious communities, men and women, continue to work with Indigenous peoples.

LEGION OF MARY MATER ECCLESIAE SENATUS OF HOUSTON December 9th 2018 www.legion -of-mary-houston.com The Immaculate Conception, December 8th The praesidium should without delay have a Mass offered for the soul of each one of its active members who may die; and each member of that praesidium should specially recite all the legion prayers, inclusive of the rosary, at least once for the same intention. But these duties do not extend to the deceased relatives of members. As many legionaries as possible, and not those of the particular praesidium alone, should attend the Mass and accompany the remains to burial. It is recommended that the rosary and other legion prayers should be recited while the interment is actually taking place. This could be done immediately after the official prayers of the Church. This practice, besides being of much benefit to the deceased, will be found to be a source of deep consolation to the sorrowing relatives, to the legionaries themselves, and to all the friends present. It is trusted that the same prayers will have been said more than once beside the remains during the period of laying out. Nor should the duty of remembrance be deemed then to cease. In the month of November each year, each praesidium shall have a Mass celebrated for the souls of the legionary dead, not of that praesidium alone but of all the world. In this, as on all other occasions where prayer is offered for departed legionaries, all grades of membership are comprised. “Purgatory forms part of the realm of Mary.
