December 2018 LEGION OF MARY MATER ECCLESIAE SENATUS OF HOUSTON December 9th 2018 www.legion -of-mary-houston.com The Immaculate Conception, December 8th The praesidium should without delay have a Mass offered for the soul of each one of its active members who may die; and each member of that praesidium should specially recite all the legion prayers, inclusive of the rosary, at least once for the same intention. But these duties do not extend to the deceased relatives of members. As many legionaries as possible, and not those of the particular praesidium alone, should attend the Mass and accompany the remains to burial. It is recommended that the rosary and other legion prayers should be recited while the interment is actually taking place. This could be done immediately after the official prayers of the Church. This practice, besides being of much benefit to the deceased, will be found to be a source of deep consolation to the sorrowing relatives, to the legionaries themselves, and to all the friends present. It is trusted that the same prayers will have been said more than once beside the remains during the period of laying out. Nor should the duty of remembrance be deemed then to cease. In the month of November each year, each praesidium shall have a Mass celebrated for the souls of the legionary dead, not of that praesidium alone but of all the world. In this, as on all other occasions where prayer is offered for departed legionaries, all grades of membership are comprised. “Purgatory forms part of the realm of Mary. There, too, are her children, who in a passing spell of pain await their birth to the glory which will never pass. St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Bernardine of Siena, Louis de Blois, as well as others, explicitly proclaim Mary to be Queen of Purgatory; and St. Louis-Marie de Montfort urges us to think and act in accordance with that Although the belief that Mary was sinless, or conceived belief. Alfie, as he was known, entered the Novitiate of the Irish Christian Brothers on September 8th, 1948. However he suffered fainting attacks and it was decided that he should return to his family in Tullamore for a time to see if he could build up his strength. Alfie was heartbroken. However, one evening in 1950, his brother Jack invited him to a meeting of the Legion of Mary. Alfie never looked back, eventually offering his services to the headquarters (the ‘Concilium’) of the Legion of Mary. On 11th February 1953, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Alfie received a letter from Concilium inviting him to work as a Legion envoy in South America. Although his mother would miss him dearly, Alfie accepted. • 7 Oct 2020 – Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
NO. 10 OCTOBER 2020 7 OCT 2020 – FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is an interesting one. In the 16th century Pope Pius V was having trouble with the Ottoman Turks, who were a real danger to Christianity. After months of disagreements and bickering, he was able to unite Spain, Venice, and the States of the Church in a naval expedition to fight the Turks. The two navies met in the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece on October 7, 1571. On the same day, the Rosary Confraternity of Rome was meeting at the Dominican headquarters there. The group recited the Rosary for the special intention of the Christians at battle. The Christians defeated the Turks in a spectacular victory and believed it was the intercessory power of the Blessed Virgin that won the victory. Pope Pius V dedicated the day as one of thanksgiving to Our Lady of Victory. Pope Gregory XIII later changed the name to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary focuses on the intercessory power of Mary. It shows that when Christians are in danger, they can go to Mary. And when an individual is in pain, discouraged, or having trouble accepting God’s will, he or she can also go to Mary. She will pray to her Son for anyone who calls on her. Anyone who prays to Mary no longer feels alone because she prays with them and for them.
