Prayer for the Month: Prayer for Victims of Abortion

Lord Jesus Christ, You took our human nature upon
Yourself. You shared our life and death, our childhood and adulthood.
You also shared our time in the womb. While still God, while worshipped and adored by the angels, while Almighty and filling every part of the universe, You dwelt for nine months in the womb of Mary. You were our Redeemer in the womb, our God who has a preborn child.
Lord Jesus, we ask You to bless and protect the children who

today are in their mothers’ womb. Save them from the

danger of abortion. Give their mothers the grace to sacrifice themselves, in body and soul, for their children. Help all people to recognize in the preborn child a brother, a sister, saved by You, our Redeemer in the womb.

For our recently deceased family, friends and community members especially Samuel Bartlett, and Mrs. Rita Coyne.

“Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light

shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

Parish teams met during the summer to take a deep dive into the survey results and create goals in one or more of the three synod priority areas based on their parish strengths and opportunities. e Diocese has already begun to implement synod recommendations to help improve communication in the parishes. More than 30 parishes have converted to new websites through eCatholic, using a template designed to provide easy access to the information parishioners want most and to share diocesan news and updates. e rest of the parishes are scheduled to transition to the new platform over the next year and a half.
ere is an opportunity for growth in the areas of faith formation and evangelization for all ages.
Catholic Leadership Institute also noted that respondents who strongly recommended their pastors were nine times more likely to strongly recommend their parishes, and, overall, most respondents agreed that preaching was good at their parishes.
In addition, all the clergy are using uniform email addresses,

Series: What is Catholicism? — “Abraham”

Ascension Church, Georgia • 7 - 8:30 pm

Each Thursday from October 2019 through April 2020, Ascension Church will be hosting a talk exploring some topic of the Catholic faith. Lectures are low stress and designed for both the person who knows nothing as well as the person who knows quite a lot. Lectures will be around 40-50 minutes. There will be time for questions and fellowship afterwards. Talks will be given by Anthony Rosselli, PhD candidate. Abraham is considered the “father” — the first ancestor — of Jews and Christians. Indeed, a host of promises were made to Abraham and his family. Do these promises have anything to do with us today? And why, if God loves him so, did God ask Abraham to kill his son? What could this story possibly mean?

Canadian Martyrs Church officially blessed Half a country away, Midland, Ont., there is a shrine dedicated to eight Canadian Jesuit Martyrs killed between 1642 and 1649 by Iroquois natives. Now a new church at 5771 Granville Ave. in Richmond has been dedicated to the memory of Sts. Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brebeuf, Charles Garnier, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Noel Chabanel, John La Lande and Rene Goupil, Jesuit pioneering missionaries who brought the Gospel to the Huron and Iroquois in Canada and the U.S. All were priests except the Jesuit associates Rene Goupil, who was a surgeon, and John La Lande. They were beautified by Pope Pius XI on June 21, 1925, and canonized by the same Pontiff five years later. On March 2, nearly 1,000 jubilant parishioners crowded into the new church while an overflow audience watched the dedication Mass via a closed-circuit broadcast in the parish hall. Archbishop Adam Exner, OMI, exhorted Canadian Martyrs’parishioners to adhere to their sainted patrons’ legacy of “determination, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to building up the Kingdom of God here on earth.” The house, he said, is a witness of their faith to all who look upon it. “The parishioners of this parish, most of them, have come from faraway countries and have seen the need to build a new parish. After much searching, the land and the church were bought. Many of you were here for the blessing of the first church. Soon after, it became clear that the church was simply too small and that a new and larger church and parish facilities were needed.

Numbering over 1,172,000, Indigenous peoples represent approximately 3.8 per cent of the total Canadian population and speak 50 traditional languages. Of the three Indigenous groups in Canada, First Nations people have the largest population (698,025), followed by the Métis (389,780), and the Inuit (50,480). Approximately 54 per cent of Indigenous people live in the country's major metropolitan centres; the rest live in smaller communities in other parts of their traditional territories. Approximately 25 per cent of all Indigenous peoples in Canada identify themselves as Catholic, and they are found in every diocese across the country.1 The basic organizational structure of the Catholic Church is diocesan. Each diocese, under its own Bishop, is responsible for its own pastoral outreach and ministry, and each diocese is the essential and primary pastoral agent in the lives of all Catholics, including Indigenous peoples. It is the local Bishop who knows best the needs and situation of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis who may be in his diocese. In addition to the outreach and pastoral ministry by the local diocese, many Canadian Catholic religious communities, men and women, continue to work with Indigenous peoples.

Three were killed at Ossernenon, today’s Auriesville, near Albany, New York. Five were killed in Huron territory, about 150 km north of Toronto. The layman René Goupil had come to New France in 1640 as a donné (he was not bound to the Society of Jesus by religious vows, but by a contract to help the missionaries). He was with Father Isaac Jogues and about 40 Hurons when the group was attacked on Lake St-Pierre in the St. Lawrence River by Iroquois. Father Jogues was taken prisoner and tortured in Iroquois territory. René Goupil was killed at Ossernenon on September 29, 1642. Father Jogues was eventually held prisoner in Manhattan. With the help of the Dutch, he escaped and made his way to France and back to New France. On September 24, 1646, with the lay donné Jean de la Lande he left Trois-Rivières on a mission to evangelize the Iroquois. They were met with hostility when they arrived at Ossernenon because the Iroquois blamed the Blackrobes for the epidemic that had killed many people in their village. Father Jogues was killed by a hatchet blow on the head, on October 18, 1646.

215 Timothy G. Pearson the Prerequisites That Made It Possible for the Catholic Church to Proclaim a Person a Saint and a Martyr

book reviews 215 Timothy G. Pearson Becoming Holy in Early Canada [McGill-Queen’s Studies in the History of Religion 70]. McGill-Queen’s University Press, Montreal/London 2014, xvii + 295 pp. isbn 9780773544192. £21.99; cnd$32.95. The prerequisites that made it possible for the Catholic Church to proclaim a person a saint and a martyr were defined by the Council of Trent (1545–1563). Normally, a candidate for sainthood must go through a process of canonization that includes several stages—Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed, and, eventu- ally, Saint. Martyrdom was a special category that described men and women who sacrificed their life for the Faith before a persecutor whose main motiva- tion was hate of the martyr’s Faith. In its mandate, the Sacred Congregation of the Rites, established in 1588, included the verification of all prerequisites for sainthood and martyrdom and the process of canonization. In early Canada, an area that Canadian historian Timothy G. Pearson’s book describes as the Saint Lawrence Valley and neighbouring missions from 1607 to roughly 1763, 38 persons—23 men and fifteen women, including eleven Natives—were recognized by their community as saintly persons—or “holy persons,” as Pearson defines them. However, the Church canonized only twelve of them. Eight of these are also officially described as martyrs. (The latter are all Jesuits and are now popularly known as “Canadian Martyrs.”) The last two Canadian saints were officially proclaimed as late as 3 April 2014, when Pope Francis i bypassed the usual canonization process and declared the offi- cial sainthood of Marie Guyart-Martin, an Ursuline nun known in religion as Marie de l’Incarnation (1599–1672), and of François de Laval, vicar apostolic in Canada and then first bishop of Québec (1623–1708).
