Rosen Received: 29 February 2016; Accepted: 13 May 2016; Published: 21 May 2016 Abstract: Recurrent haze in Southeast Asian countries including Singapore is largely attributable to rampant forest fires in Indonesia due to, for example, extensive slash-and-burn (S & B) culture. Drawing on the “treadmill of production” and environmental governance approach, we examine causes and consequences of this culture. We found that, despite some perceived benefits, its environmental consequences include deforestation, soil erosion and degradation, global warming, threats to biodiversity, and trans-boundary haze pollution, while the societal consequences comprise regional tension, health risks, economic and productivity losses, as well as food insecurity. We propose sustainability through a plural coexistence framework of governance for targeting S & B that incorporates strategies of incentives, education and community resource management. Breathing smoke can shorten lives and cause heart attacks, asthma attacks and other dangerous health effects. Even healthy adults can risk coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Preparation for wildfires Coordinating Partners: Before a wildfire occurs Preparation is key to protecting your family, especially if you live where wildfire risk is high. Here are some steps to take: • Know how you will get alerts and health warnings about high fire risk or an active fire. Contact your local authorities how to sign up for alerts. • Before fire season begins, make sure you have extra food, water, and medications on hand to last for several days so that you don’t need to go out during the event. • Designate a clean room in your home. That room may need a properly-sized air purifier with a HEPA filter to further reduce particles coming from the outside. • Understand what plans your workplace, or your child’s school or day care center has in place when wildfires occur. • If you think you’ll need to be outside during the fire, consider getting disposable respirator masks that are rated as N95 or higher to help reduce inhalation of particle pollution. These masks must fit securely to work. They do not work for children or people with beards. Do not use dust masks or surgical masks because they do not filter out harmful particles. Las soluciones del modelo tridimensional proporcionan las superficies de reflexión dentro de las cuales los granos pueden quedar confinados. As a result, local air pollution officials are issuing a health cautionary statement effective today (10/25) through Monday (10/26) for San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, and Fresno Counties. In addition, the SQF Complex Fire in Tulare County, Creek Fire in Madera/Fresno counties and other California wildfires continue to generate smoke, which contains particulate matter pollution (PM2.5). Smoke impacts are expected to continue until the fires are extinguished. Exposure to particulate matter pollution can trigger asthma attacks, aggravate chronic bronchitis, and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Individuals with heart or lung disease should follow their doctors’ advice for dealing with episodes of PM exposure. Those with existing respiratory conditions, including COVID-19, young children and the elderly, are especially susceptible to the health effects from this form of pollution. Anyone experiencing poor air quality due to wildfire smoke should move indoors, to a filtered, air-conditioned environment with windows closed. The habitat diversity, structural simplicity, totipotency, rapid rate of multiplication and high metal accumulation capacity make bryophytes an ideal organism for pollution studies. The decline and absence of bryophyte populations especially epiphytes is a phenomenon primarily induced by air pollution caused by gaseous and particulate pollutants. Bryophytes are reliable indicators and monitors of air pollution as they are easy to handle and show a vast range of specific sensitivity and visible symptoms to pollutants greatly exceeding that of higher plants. The microenvironment inside the mobile machine may cause exposure to strongly polluted mine air, which adversely affects the health and working performance of the operator. Harmful pollutants may access the cabin together with the ventilation air delivered from the machine’s surroundings. This work proposes a solution that is able to ensure that the air for the machine operator is of proper quality. The proposal emerged from an analysis of the compliance of cabins of mobile machines working underground in mines with occupational health and safety (H&S) standards. An analytical model of air quality in a well-mixed zone was utilized for this purpose. The cabin atmosphere was investigated with regard to the concentration of gaseous species in the surrounding air, the cabin ventilation rate, and human breathing parameters. The analysis showed that if currently available ventilation approaches are used, compliance with multiple H&S standards cannot be attained inside the cabin if standards are exceeded in the surroundings of the machine. -
