Signed declaration_________________________________________ Date_____________________ 3 Abstract This thesis examines the development of campaigning writing in newspapers and periodicals between 1840 and 1875 and its relationship to concepts of Old and New Journalism. Campaigning is often regarded as characteristic of the New Journalism of the fin de siècle, particularly in the form associated with W. T. Stead at the Pall Mall Gazette in the 1880s. New Journalism was persuasive, opinionated, and sensational. It displayed characteristics of the American mass-circulation press, including eye-catching headlines on newspaper front pages. The period covered by this thesis begins in 1840, with the Chartist Northern Star as the hub of a campaign on behalf of the leaders of the Newport rising of November 1839. -

Dickens by Numbers: the Christmas Numbers of Household Words and All the Year Round Aine Helen McNicholas PhD University of York English May 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the short fiction that makes up the annual Christmas Numbers of Dickens’s journals, Household Words and All the Year Round. Through close reading and with reference to Dickens’s letters, contemporary reviews, and the work of his contributors, this thesis contends that the Christmas Numbers are one of the most remarkable and overlooked bodies of work of the second half of the nineteenth century. Dickens’s short fictions rarely receive sustained or close attention, despite the continuing commitment by critics to bring the whole range of Dickens’s career into focus, from his sketches and journalism, to his late public readings. Through readings of selected texts, this thesis will show that Dickens’s Christmas Number stories are particularly powerful and experimental examples of some of the deepest and most recurrent concerns of his work. They include, for example, three of his four uses of a child narrator and one of his few female narrators, and are concerned with childhood, memory, and the socially marginal figures and distinctive voices that are so characteristic of his longer work. But, crucially, they also go further than his longer work to thematise the very questions raised by their production, including anonymity, authorship, collaboration, and annual return. This thesis takes Dickens’s works as its primary focus, but it will also draw throughout on the work of his contributors, which appeared alongside Dickens’s stories in these Christmas issues. -

INTRODUCTION Proem In a sermon preached in 1850, Cardinal Newman noted the "extreme influence of periodical publications" on the mass reading public, teaching them what to think and say.1 The quali ty of the periodicals the public relied upon for ideas and enter tainment varied considerably, but there is no question that die best writers and statesmen of Victorian England were con tributing articles to the leading magazines where formerly they might have written books or pamphlets.2 W. F. Poole said that "every question in literature, religion, politics, social science, political economy . finds its freshest interpretation in the current periodicals" and "is read before the month is ended in every country in Europe."3 As a consequence, Victorian newspapers and periodicals provide an enormous quantity of raw material about Victorian culture. Walter Houghton lists several reasons why they are valuable to modern scholars: The importance of Victorian periodicals to modern scholars can scarcely be exaggerated. In scores of journals and thousands of articles there is a remarkable record of contemporary thought in every field, with a full range of opinion on every question—a range exceeding what could be found, in many cases, in books. Also, because reviews and magazines reflect the current situation, they are indispensable for the study of opinion at a given moment or in a short span of years. Charles Dickens' career as contributor, editor and publish er also testifies to the significance of Victorian periodical litera ture. His weekly journals, Household Words, 1850 to 1859, and All the Year Round, 1859 to 1870, absorbed his time and thought, and required his arduous labor for twenty continuous years. -

This dissertation does not exceed the regulation length, including footnotes, references, and appendices but excluding the bibliography. iv Abstract Whether as a counter-cultural phenomenon or a sociological myth, Bohemia has long eluded concrete definitions. In the last thirty years, however, there has been a noticeable contrast between the ambitious theoretical concerns of cultural historians of nineteenth- century Continental Bohemianism and the more staunchly biographical approaches of critics concerned with Bohemian writers in mid-Victorian England. In the absence of the Latin Quarter, attempts to define the English Bohemianism of Thackeray‘s era have been somewhat reductive, revolving around London establishments such as the Garrick Club and disparate groupings such as the metropolitan novelists, journalists, and playwrights who are sometimes pigeonholed as ‗Dickens‘s Young Men‘. This thesis uses the work of William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–63) to argue that such readings have lost sight of the profound impact which mid-Victorian ideas of Bohemianism had on a far wider section of middle-class Englishmen. Chapter 1 explores the pivotal role which Thackeray played in the translation of Bohemian behavioural ideals from France to England. Beginning and ending with his seminal Bohemian protagonist in Vanity Fair (1847–48), it surveys his engagement with the still-evolving ideas of Bohemianism at home and on the Continent. -

George Augustus Sala: The Daily Telegraph’s Greatest Special Correspondent — Dr. Peter Blake, Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton Early Years Making His Name: Dickens’ The young George Augustus Sala was a precocious literary Household Words, 1851–1856 talent. In 1841, at the age of 13, he wrote his first novel entitled But in the same year as the Great Exhibition Sala finally came Jemmy Jenkins; or the Adventures of a Sweep. Abstract the Thesis Analyses the Sensation Novels of Edmund Yates
Abstract The thesis analyses the sensation novels of Edmund Yates and Wilkie Collins with emphasis on the representation of devotion within the texts. The thesis examines the depictions of four distinct types of character, the wife, the female friend, the disabled male and the servant, and identifies a trend within the novels of Yates and Collins whereby characters defy the conventional power structures of class and gender, obtaining agency via acts of devotion that nevertheless also perform and reinforce conventional social structures. The devotion between characters can therefore be understood as a force that ‘queers’ identity, reconfiguring relationships in ways that unsettle the bounds of heteronormativity. The sensational devotion of Yates and Collins is analysed in the context of the periodical press with which both Yates and Collins were closely involved. By using periodical articles as indicators of contemporary opinion and argument, the thesis explores Yates’s and Collins’s divergence from cultural norms, a divergence that opens up new possibilities for the sensation genre.
