Under the apt pseudonym of “A. Pendragon”, Isaacs captured the dynamic atmosphere of the colonial era in his writing, which ranged from plays to poetry and from journalism to prose. But he did not fit comfortably into colonial society. Set apart by an unconventional private life, his Jewish heritage, his fierce intelligence and his willingness to speak and write his mind, he led a surprisingly varied life across two hemispheres and two Australian colonies. Isaacs was largely forgotten after his death. This chronological biography redresses this neglect by establishing the details of his life and writing. An Appendix provides a bibliography of his published and unpublished works. Opening chapters examine Isaacs’ youth in England, with an emphasis on his first precocious publication, his enthusiasm for antiques, his influential connections, his travels and his immigration to South Australia. Following chapters discuss Isaacs’ productive years in Australia, where, despite poverty, imprisonment and chronic ill-health, he visited the Victorian goldfields, wrote plays that were performed around the world, and had great influence in Gawler. There, he was a founder of the Humbug Society, influential in the Gawler Institute and responsible for an Australian anthem. One of Isaacs’ plays, based on Frankenstein, was possibly the first published science fiction in Australia. This opinionated man left a significant imprint on his society and its literature. He did not become famous or wealthy, but his activities and his writing provide a useful counterpoint to the conventional interpretation of a successful life. As an inaugural study, The Life and Work of George Isaacs contributes another strand to our knowledge of Australian colonial literature and provides a foundation for further research. Staff at the National Archives in Kew, England organized access to various useful legal documents, including the transcript that bears Isaacs’ birth date. THE TRIAL AND EXECUTION OF ELIZABETH WOOLCOCK IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA IN 1873 DAVID PLATER, JOANNA DUNCAN † AND SUE MILNE This article considers the trial and execution of Elizabeth Woolcock in 1873 for the alleged murder of her husband by poison. In examining the evidence adduced against her, notably the inconclusive scientific evidence, it is argued that Elizabeth was not the callous murderer presented by the prosecution but an ‘innocent victim of circumstance’ who was convicted and condemned to death, as much upon speculation and stereotype, as upon the tenuous strength of the prosecution case. Both Elizabeth’s trial and her eventual fate can be viewed in a wider context and illustrate the often polarised perception and treatment of female capital offenders during this period. Elizabeth’s already heinous crime in murdering her husband, further aggravated through her use of poison, and her purported liaison with another man, combined to brand her as ‘a devil incarnate’ and served to forfeit any claims to mercy on her behalf. Free-to-air channels would face competition from emerging digital TV players. Senator Coonan said the cross-media and foreign ownership restrictions would be removed by 2007 or 2012, but the Government would require at least five “commercial media groups” to remain in metropolitan markets and four in regional markets. Martineau, who had died the previous year, had published numerous sketches of the recently dead for the Daily News between 1852 and 1863, many of which were collected in Biographical Sketches (1869).1 For Morley, these were “masterpieces in the style of the vignette. Their conciseness, their clearness in fact, their definiteness in judgment, and above all the rightly-graduated impression of the writer’s own personality in the background, make them perfect in their kind.”2 In reviewing Martineau’s work, Morley was himself writing a biographical sketch, a genre that was widespread in periodical literature by the middle of the nineteenth century. Accounts of recently dead editors and contributors ranged from obituaries and memoirs to reviews of books (especially biographies, memoirs, and autobiographies), but many were simply brief sketches of recent or earlier nineteenth century journalistic figures.

On a hot December morning in 1894, a week before Christmas, the South Australian House of Assembly voted on the third reading of the Constitution Amendment Bill: ‘The Ayes were sonorous and cheery, the Noes despondent like muffled bells’. When the result was announced, thirty-one in favour and fourteen against, the House resounded to loud cheering as South Australia’s Parliament acknowledged its decision to give votes to women. The legislation made South Australia one of the first places in the world to admit women to the parliamentary suffrage; it was alone in giving them the right to stand for Parliament. Its passage caused elation, rejoicing and relief among those who had laboured to achieve it, for the Act opened the way for women’s political equality and their fuller participation in public life. Before this Act, one level of rights and responsibilities existed for men, another for women. These were determined under the Constitution of 1855-56, which allowed eligible men over twenty-one years to vote and to stand for election for the House of Assembly. Men over thirty years with further residential and property qualifications were eligible to vote and stand for election to the Legislative Council. The masculine gender only, or the word ‘person’, assumed to be male, was used in the Constitution. Women could neither vote nor stand for Parliament.
