Signature: …………………………………………………Peter John Bunten. Abstract The nature writings of Henry Williamson deserve revaluation. The qualities of Williamson’s work have never been fully acknowledged, in part because of the disproportionate attention given to the flawed and uneven novel sequence A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight (1951–1969). His controversial involvement with extreme right-wing politics has also adversely affected his reputation. This thesis will suggest that Williamson’s nature writings, in particular his animal biographies – Tarka the Otter (1927), Salar the Salmon (1935) and The Phasian Bird (1948) – represent his greatest literary achievement, and that these three major works merit a prominent place in any critical survey of the development of the twentieth-century English novel. Williamson’s use of the novel form to represent the lives of animals involves the complex task of conveying the experience and consciousness of non-human subjects. The degree to which this necessarily leads to an anthropomorphic approach will be addressed. In addition, it will be argued that his writings represent an early, and often ground-breaking, example of how narrative fiction can draw attention to environmental issues.

    EVELYN WAUGH NEWSLETrER AND STUDIES Volume 30, Number 1 Spring, 1996 EVELYN WAUGH AS A FICTIONAL CHARACTER By Jeffrey A. Manley There can be little doubt that Evelyn Waugh was the direct inspiration for a fictional character in the works of the English writer, Henry Williamson (1895-1977). He appears as the young novelist Anthony Crull in Williamson's novel sequence "A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight." Anthony Crull and his wife (Virginia) figure as secondary characters in The Power of the Pead (London, 1963). This is the eleventh volume in Williamson's 15 volume cycle, which covers the period from the 1890's until the late 1940's. Williamson's "Chronicle" is relatively little known in the United States, having failed to find a publisher in this country. 1 He is known best here for his wildlife novels, such as Tarka The Otter and Salar The Salmon, as well as for his earlier tetralogy "The Flax of Dreams."2 Williamson's quite overt and unapologetic support for Sir Oswald Mosley and Adolf Hitler, who Williamson seriously believed would save Europe from another devastating war, probably contributed to his failure to find a U.S. publisher for the "Chronicle" and goes a long way toward explaining his loss of popularity even in England, where he enjoyed a relative success until the late 1930's. Williamson's use of Evelyn Waugh as the basis for the character Tony Crull is fairly well known among Williamson scholars and fans.3 Perhaps because of Williamson's relative obscurity after the 1930's, this characterization appears to have been little remarked by Waugh scholars.

Luke LeCras i ABSTRACT Fascist and extreme right-wing political movements in Britain have been the subject of enduring interest to historians since 1945, with the majority of works centring on the British Union of Fascists (BUF), a political party founded and led by Sir Oswald Mosley between 1932 and 1940. Despite the BUF’s failure to achieve levels of support on par with many fascist movements in continental Europe, there is now a sizeable body of historiography dealing with the party as a minor case within the study of European fascism and as a unique phenomenon of radical politics in interwar Britain. By comparison, little interest has been devoted to aspects of British fascism not connected to Mosley or the BUF. Moreover, extreme right movements operating in Britain since 1945 have largely been characterized as either a direct legacy of the interwar movement or an attempt to reform British fascism under a different guise. This thesis re-examines the continuity between the interwar and the post-war iterations of the extreme right in Britain by focusing on the ideas and activism of Arthur Kenneth (A.K) Chesterton. A high-ranking member of the BUF who made substantial contributions to the party’s propaganda, Chesterton split with Mosley in 1938 to pursue an independent career in extreme right-wing politics that persisted until his death in 1973.
