  • In a Foreign Field – Memorials to the Missing
In a Foreign Field – Memorials to the Missing Many of Helensburgh’s soldiers died in battle and their remains were not recovered. Men were often buried in temporary battlefield cemeteries and after the Armistice the Imperial War Graves Commission, as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission was then known, carried out what was called a ‘concentration’. The mortal remains of the war dead were collected from the battlefield cemeteries and re-buried in the new Imperial War Grave cemeteries. In the beautifully maintained Commonwealth War Grave cemeteries the graves of all soldiers, regardless of rank, religion or country of origin are marked with a uniform headstone of white Portland limestone. However, some men were lost forever on the battlefields and at sea and have No Known Grave. These men, approximately 315,000 in France and Belgium alone, are remembered with honour on the great memorials built overseas to honour their sacrifice. The inscription on the Menin Gate in Ypres encapsulates the intention of these memorials, “Here are recorded names of officers and men who fell in Ypres Salient, but to whom the fortune of war denied the known and honoured burial given to their comrades in death”. The names of Helensburgh men with no known grave, 101 altogether, appear on twenty-six memorials to the missing. All images, unless stated, Courtesy of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. As we move into the final year of the centenary of the end of WW1 our head guide Paul Reed has created a selection of special anniversary event tours plus new tours covering some of the major final campaign battles. We also have an expanded collection of WW2 tours some of which cover historical events around the end of the war and the aftermath of the Cold War. Further afield we are pleased to introduce a brand new Vietnam tour covering the harrowing events of that long campaign. Ian Henry, Chief Executive, Leger Holidays Inspirational journeys of Remembrance and Discovery Visiting battlefields from the two World Wars remains a fascinating, rewarding and moving experience. A century after WW1 and some 75 years since WW2, the debt we owe to those generations remains strong and the legacy of Remembrance they have left us prompts many who travel on our Battlefield Tours to ask more: who is the solider in that faded photo at home? What was that name on the local war memorial? What did grandad do, and how did his war fit into the bigger picture? Villy La Ferté 1940 These are just the sort of questions Passchendaele is a good example myself and my team of dedicated of this: think of this battle and one Specialist Battlefield Guides (see imagines a lunar landscape of page 6) get asked on a typical water-filled shell holes on a rain Leger Battlefield Tour.

  • The Fallen of Bridgeton Calton, Camlachie, Dalmarnock & Mile-End
The Fallen of Bridgeton Calton, Camlachie, Dalmarnock & Mile-End In The Great War 1914-18 Transcribed and Researched by Bob Currie Bridgeton Library Local History Group Roll of Honour of The Fallen of Bridgeton, Calton, Camlachie, Dalmarnock & Mile-End In The Great War 1914-18 Transcribed and researched by Bob Currie (Bridgeton Library Local History Group) Preface This list of names of The Fallen of Glasgow’s East-end records some of the millions of victims of the bloodiest wars in world history. The names, extracted from ‘The City of Glasgow Roll of Honour of The Great War’ (1922) compiled by the late Kevin O’Neil, were subsequently checked against the CWGC site for date of death, grave reference and/or memorial panel reference and next of kin. Any errors or omissions are entirely mine. I need only add that I set myself an enormous task in extracting this list of names from the 18,000 recorded on The City of Glasgow Roll of Honour (1922). In striving for accuracy I have done my best. Having been born and bred in Bridgeton I was familiar with the street names and I must say I found it a poignant exercise one way and another, having walked many of those familiar streets in the distant past. Moreover, in remembering an Uncle, likewise raised in Bridgeton, who died at St. Julian during the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, the list became my personal tribute to the Fallen Heroes of Glasgow’s East-end. Their gallantry is commemorated in this Casualty List of names of sons, husbands’ fathers and brothers in localised clusters of death.

  • Middlesbrough War Memorial
Names on the Middlesbrough War Memorial The Middlesbrough Roll of Honour of the Great War Names “H” Compiled by Robert Coulson (1952 – 2008) In the years 1914-1918 thousands of Middlesbrough men and women served their country in a time of hardship, stress and suffering both for the troops on the battlefronts and those left at home. After the Armistice in November of 1918 handsome memorial tablets and plaques recalling the fallen were erected in the works, shops and churches of the Middlesbrough area. At this time a committee was formed to consider the question of a war memorial for the town as a whole to remember the citizens who had laid down their lives. In the words of the committee, “We recognise the splendid sacrifice made by our men and we desire that our children and our children’s’ children should hear the story and share in the inspiration which such sacrifice will always give”. The response of the townspeople resulted in the fine cenotaph of Aberdeen granite and the wall of Portland stone containing the bronze panels with the names of the fallen that we see today at the entrance to Albert Park. The memorial works were completed at a cost of approximately £17,000 and the people of the town attended in their thousands for the dedication and unveiling ceremony which took place on November 11th 1922. This roll of honour contains close to 3500 names of the fallen who are remembered on the memorial and also those whose names were put forward by their families after the unveiling ceremony.

This study looks in detail at those armed forces personnel from the Hillfoots towns of Clackmannanshire who died in the conflict. Over 550 fatalities with close links to the area have been identified so far. Of these, approximately 475 are commemorated on the local war memorials at Alva, Coalsnaughton, Dollar, Menstrie, Muckhart and Tillicoultry. The remaining seventy five or so may be commemorated elsewhere. In this study I have attempted to expand on the few details provided on the memorials to give a better understanding of the lives of those who died.
