    82 NATIONAL COLLEGIATE Water Polo NATIONAL COLLEGIATE 2001 Championship Highlights Make It Eight: On his final day at the helm of the Stanford men’s water polo team, Dante Dettamanti claimed one final record that had eluded him: an eighth national title. The Cardinal squad beat UCLA, 8-5, December 2 in front of a home crowd to give its 25-year head coach a tie for the most NCAA titles by any coach. Dettamanti, who ends his collegiate coaching career with 666-208-6 record, tied California’s Pete Cutino with eight NCAA championships in a career. Stanford had won its most recent title in 1994 and had lost two title games since. Stanford defeated UCLA, 8-5, behind two goals by Tony Azevedo and eight saves by Nick Ellis. Marshall was the winner of the Golden Bear Coaches Award, and Sharf and junior Brian Bacharach were the recipients of the Academic Achievement Award. Tyrrell and Monsees received the Peter J. Cutino Water Polo Trophy as the team’s most improved players. Monsees finished the 2005 campaign with 16 goals in 27 matches, and Tyrrell tallied 11 goals in 27 contests, including two goals in the Bears’ 9-7 victory over UC Irvine in the MPSF third- place match. Marshall is the third-ever recipient of the Golden Bear Coaches’ Award after competing in six matches last fall, notching goals against Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz. UCLA, winner of the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation tournament, dropped to 24-5. The Bru- ins were led by a pair of goals from junior Josh Samuels. UCLA defeated Southern California in the MPSF title game in sudden death, 10-9. In the championship match, UCLA’s Samuels scored fi rst on a fi ve-meter penalty shot with 3:05 left in the opening period, but then the Trojans ran off fi ve consecutive goals -- from Michael Rosenthal, Connor Virjee, Nikola Vavic, Stephen Siri and Mace Rapsey -- before Samuels was able to score again with 2:29 left in the half. From there, Southern California controlled the contest with tight defense as Dennerley was able to block several of the Bruins’ shot attempts.     Water Polo 2012 NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S Highlights It’s a Five-Peat for Southern California: In its home pool, Southern California pulled off a dramatic 11-10 come-from-behind victory over rival UCLA for its fi fth straight NCAA title December 2 at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium in Los Angeles. Michael Rosenthal scored a team-high three goals in the championship match to earn Most Valuable Player honors while leading the Trojans (29-0) to an undefeated season.
