In 17 seasons (369-107, .775) Everist has led the Golden Bears to the pinnacle of the sport on three occasions, most recently a stirring 11-8 overtime win over USC in 2016 to give his alma mater its NCAA-record 14th national title. Everist also directed the Bears to an 8-6 win over USC in the 2007 title game and a thrilling 7-6 last-second national 5 championship victory over the Trojans in 2006. ncaa national championships (as a player & coach) A three-time All-American, 1988 NCAA Player of the Year and two-time United States Olympian, Everist earned 2002 MPSF Coach of the Year honors in his inaugural season when he guided Cal to the MPSF Tournament title and a national runner-up finish. Then in 2004, he was inducted into both the Cal Athletic and the USA Water Polo Halls of Fame. In 2006, Everist was selected USA Water Polo’s Elite Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to both the MPSF and NCAA titles. He also coached the United States’ World University Games team that competed in the summer of 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia, mentoring five Bears on the squad.     82 NATIONAL COLLEGIATE Water Polo NATIONAL COLLEGIATE 2001 Championship Highlights Make It Eight: On his final day at the helm of the Stanford men’s water polo team, Dante Dettamanti claimed one final record that had eluded him: an eighth national title. The Cardinal squad beat UCLA, 8-5, December 2 in front of a home crowd to give its 25-year head coach a tie for the most NCAA titles by any coach. Dettamanti, who ends his collegiate coaching career with 666-208-6 record, tied California’s Pete Cutino with eight NCAA championships in a career. Stanford had won its most recent title in 1994 and had lost two title games since. Stanford defeated UCLA, 8-5, behind two goals by Tony Azevedo and eight saves by Nick Ellis.
