Water Polo NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S Highlights Southern California tops UCLA, wins seventh title: Bolstered by the play of tournament MVP Joel Dennerley, Southern California won its fourth consecutive championship December 4 with a 7-4 victory over UCLA at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif. Denne- rley, the Trojans’ senior goalie, fi nished the championship match with 15 saves, while seven diff erent fi eld players scored for Southern California. The Trojans (24-3) become the fi rst school to win four consecutive NCAA men’s water polo titles. It was the 10th NCAA championship (7 men’s, 3 women’s) for coach Jovan Vavic. UCLA, winner of the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation tournament, dropped to 24-5. The Bru- ins were led by a pair of goals from junior Josh Samuels. UCLA defeated Southern California in the MPSF title game in sudden death, 10-9. In the championship match, UCLA’s Samuels scored fi rst on a fi ve-meter penalty shot with 3:05 left in the opening period, but then the Trojans ran off fi ve consecutive goals -- from Michael Rosenthal, Connor Virjee, Nikola Vavic, Stephen Siri and Mace Rapsey -- before Samuels was able to score again with 2:29 left in the half. From there, Southern California controlled the contest with tight defense as Dennerley was able to block several of the Bruins’ shot attempts.
