Abstract South America is diverse in climatic and thus vegetational zonation, and even the uniformly looking tropical rain forests are a mosaic of different habitats depending on the soils, the regional climate and also the geological history. An important part of the nutrient webs of the rain forests is formed by the terrestrial Isopoda, or Oniscidea, the only truly terrestrial taxon within the Crustacea. They are important, because they participate in soil formation by breaking up leaf litter when foraging on the fungi and bacteria growing on them. After a century of research on this interesting taxon, a revision of the terrestrial isopod taxa from South America and some of the Antillean Islands, which are traditionally placed in the family Philosciidae, was performed in the last years to establish monophyletic genera. Within this study, the phylogenetic relationships of these genera are elucidated in the light of phylogenetic systematics. Several new taxa are recognized, which are partially neotropical, partially also found on other continents, particularly the old Gondwanian fragments. The monophyla are checked for their distributional patterns which are compared with those patterns from other taxa from South America and some correspondence was found. The distributional patterns are analysed with respect to the evolution of the Oniscidea and also with respect to the geological history of their habitats. -

Eviction of poor communities - Malaysia – 15th August ,2019 Introduction Pre colonized Malaya, would have had many types of land ownerships relations. As many parts of the country would not have been explored and settled by our early inhabitants. It can be assumed that under feudal Malaya, the Kings or state heads would have been the authorized owners of the lands together with their ruling nobles. The lands were however allowed to be cultivated by peasants and the general masses as long as their produce was paid as taxes to the ruling class. Besides these lands, we have to take note of native customary land owned and managed by indigenous communities. Land was owned communally there was no clear demarcations and borders of land owned. This all changed and abolished during the British occupation, with the introduction of National Land Code 1965 (‘the Code’), which codified the concept of Torrens system which was ownership via registration of ownership, title and interest, named after Sir Robert Torrens who introduced the concept in South Australia in 1858. This system was obviously incompatible to Asian tradition and culture. Till today there are continuous land disputes between settled communities and new private landowners whom purchase these land without the knowledge of their tribal occupants from state or other previous private entities. There are cases where community occupied lands are state lands. Thus the state with its wide powers evicts the occupants and then alienates these lands for a price to private entities. -

Wilson, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences/Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences Abstract Habitats in the anchialine ecosystem are defined as coastal ponds, pools, and caves that lack surface connections to the open ocean, but possess both seawater and freshwater influences due to subterranean connections to the ocean and groundwater. Such habitats are rare worldwide, but are concentrated in the Hawaiian Islands. Organisms that live in these habitats must cope with changing salinities, variable oxygen regimes, high levels of UV radiation, and anthropogenic effects such as pollution and invasive species. Accordingly, such organisms represent an opportunity to shed light on environmental physiology and invasive species biology. However, few studies have investigated physiology or response to invasive species in anchialine organisms. Accordingly, the objective of this dissertation is to examine the effect of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the physiology and ecology of anchialine organisms. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the anchialine ecosystem and outlines the specific aims of the dissertation. Chapter 2 presents a series of field and laboratory based experiments investigating how endemic Hawaiian anchialine organisms have responded to invasive fishes. -

No publications dealing with Syncarida, Mictacea or Thermosbaenacea were found. This report does not deal with Amphipoda, Mysidacea or Cumacea. These updates have been made to the Zoological Catalogue of Australia Volume 19.2A on the Australian Biological Resources Study website. Introduction New taxa are listed in bold. Parentheses enclose the names of taxa no longer recognised in the Australian fauna. Other taxa are listed only when they have been referred to in the Volume 19.2A of the Zoological Catalogue of Australia recent literature.
