STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

The Dynamic Jerry Robinson
Inspicio the last laugh Jerry Robinson, 1972. Photo: Kristen Robinson. The Dynamic Jerry Robinson By Jens Robinson y father, Sherrill David Robinson, known as Jerry Rob- inson, was born in New York on New Year’s Day in 1922 Mand died on Pearl Harbor Day in 2011. In between, he did a lot of historic things. BATMAN Jerry was a 17-year-old journalism student at Columbia Uni- versity in 1939 when he was discovered by Batman co-creator Bob Kane, who hired him to work on that fledgling comic as an inker and letterer. Kane, with writer Bill Finger, had just created the character Batman for National Comics, the future DC Com- ics. Within a year, Jerry became Batman’s primary inker, with George Roussos inking backgrounds. Batman quickly became a hit character and Kane rented space for Robinson and Rous- sos in Times Square’s Times Tower. By early 1940, Finger and Kane discussed adding a sidekick. Jerry suggested the name “Robin” after Robin Hood books he had read during his boyhood, saying, in a 2005 interview, that he was inspired by one book’s N.C. Wyeth illustrations. The new character, orphaned circus performer Dick Grayson, came to live with Bruce Wayne (Batman) as his young ward in Detec- tive Comics #38 (April 1940). Robin would inspire many similar sidekicks throughout the remainder of the Golden Age of comic books. Jerry Robinson and his startling invention -- The Joker Batman’s nemesis, the Joker, was introduced around the same time, in Batman #1 (Spring 1940). Most comic historians credit my father for the iconic villain, modeled after Conrad Veidt in the 1928 movie, The Man Who Laughs. -

76052-1: Batman™ Classic TV Series – Batcave
76052-1: Batman™ Classic TV Series – Batcave By Jetro Pictures by Jetro and LEGO System A/S Batman is back in glorious 60s style and in a large 2526pc set that includes a total of 9 minifi gs. Is it a collectors item? A playset? Or is there too much nostalgia for either option? This review will (hopefully) give you the answer. Even though I wasn’t even around when the original Batman TV series aired in the 60s (January 1966 to March 1968), the iconic images of Batman and Robin chasing villains in loud colours, accompanied by large speech bubbles emphasising the power of their punches are still etched in my memory from the many reruns of this iconic show. As a result the 76052 Batman Classic TV Series Batcave is instantly recognisable, if only because of the classic lines of the Batmobile – they don’t make cars like that anymore. 72 Today’s Batman is a much darker knight, but even so, the colourful lines of the original TV series as represented in this set have an instant appeal, and not only those of us who saw the series on TV. I wanted to know if it was just my memories that drew me to the set (despite not being much of a super heroes fan, at least not when it comes to LEGO), so I sat down with my kids to build the set together and see what their reactions were. The instruction manual for this set is one hefty volume. On the one hand this has the important advantage that it is less likely to bend and deteriorate inside the box. -
Bat Gotham Final
William Uricchio The Batman’s Gotham City™: Story, Ideology, Performance The trademark affixed to Batman’s Gotham City™ suggests something of its special status. Plastered across games, amusement park rides, toys, and other collectables, Gotham City as brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros. As a place marker and invocation of urban space, Gotham City’s protected legal status in fact extends to little more than a ten-letter sequence. It lacks borders, elected officials, citizens – none of which is surprising given its fictional status. But it does have a history and a raison d’être, and with them an accretion of representational strategies, icons, and of course, characters. This essay will side-step the value of Gotham City as intellectual property and generator of profits, looking at it instead as a generative element in the production of Batman narratives and related ideological value systems, both of which offer an opportunity to rethink urban cartographies as enacted rather than objective spaces. As the Riddler once put it, “When is a man a city?” “When it’s Batman or when it’s Gotham…. It’s huge and contradictory and dark and funny and threatening.” (Gaiman 1989) It is difficult to argue with this broad spectrum of descriptors. And yet the Riddler’s remarks regarding the mutual definition of the character and the city bring with them a crucial implication. The interdependence of the Batman and Gotham City is as William Uricchio ! 4/2/09 8:03 PM Deleted: mutual essential to sustaining the logic behind the endless iterations of the narrative as the William Uricchio ! 4/2/09 8:03 PM Deleted: are Batman’s oft-invoked origin story. -

Math 181 Quiz 6 Fall 2013 Name Solutions • You have 15 minutes • No calculators 1. Batman dies leaving behind this property to Robin and Batgirl. The as- sets include the Wayne Manor, the Batcave, the Batmobile, the Batwing, and the Batboat. Assume the points are assigned as follows: Robin's Batgirl's Asset Points Points Wayne Manor(WM) 20 40 Batcave(BC) 30 20 Batmobile(BM) 30 28 Batwing(BW) 18 10 Batboat(BB) 2 2 Use the adjusted winner procedure to determine a fair allocation of the property. Answer: Wayne Manor(WM) 20 40 Batcave(BC) 30 20 Batmobile(BM) 30 28 Batwing(BW) 18 10 Batboat(BB) 2 2 Robin Points: 78 points Batgirl Points: 40 points So the Batboat goes to Batgirl Total points: Robin Points: 78 points Initial winner Batgirl Points: 42 points Initial loser Point Ratio: BC 30=20 = 1:5 BM 30=28 = 1:07143 BB 18=10 = 1:8 1 So the Batmobile is the first item to be transferred. It can be transferred completely without making Robin the initial loser, so the item must be shared. 78 − (30)x = 42 + (28)x 36 = 58x 36 18 x = = 58 29 Robins gets the Batcave, Batwing and (11/29) of the Batmobile. Batgirl gets the Wayne Manor, Batboat and (18/29) of the Batmobile. 2 2. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore inherit a house, a recording studio and a car from Dave. They submit the following bids. How should they arrive at a fair division? Alvin Simon Theodore House $210,000 $180,000 $150,000 Recording Studio $150,000 $90,000 $120,000 Car $6,000 $12,000 $9,000 Answer: Alvin Simon Theodore House $210,000 $180,000 $150,000 Recording Studio $150,000 $90,000 $120,000 Car $6,000 $12,000 $9,000 So Alvin gets the House and the Recording Studio, and Simon gets the car. -
