With the aid of a set of cartoons representing prototypical bullying scenes, we interview 120 schoolchildren (50% girls) from kindergarten to third grade (age range: 5.44–9.58) from three mainstream public schools located in the eastern Community of Madrid, in order to analyse their perceptions regarding this phenomenon. Results show that 94.2% (n = 113) of schoolchildren are able to recognize when a partner is victimized. Nevertheless, significant differences were found by grade (p = 0.017), with kindergarteners giving more responses classified as one-off aggressions. CYBERBULLIES ON CAMPUS Darby Dickerson * I. INTRODUCTION A new challenge facing educators is how to deal with the high-tech incivility that has crept onto our campuses. Technology has changed the way students approach learning, and has spawned new forms of rudeness. Students play computer games, check e-mail, watch DVDs, and participate in chat rooms during class. They answer ringing cell phones and dare to carry on conversations mid-lesson. Dealing with these types of incivilities is difficult enough, but another, more sinister e-culprit-the cyberbully-has also arrived on law school campuses. Cyberbullies exploit technology to control and intimidate others on campus.' They use web sites, blogs, and IMs2 to malign professors and classmates.3 They craft e-mails that are offensive, boorish, and cruel. They blast professors and administrators for grades given and policies passed; and, more often than not, they mix in hateful attacks on our character, motivations, physical attributes, and intellectual abilities.4 They disrupt classes, cause tension on campus, and interfere with our educational mission. -

Two parts comprise the article. The first one briefly defines the concept of collective insecurity and the second one bridges existing sociological and political science literatures relevant for the analysis of the politics of insecurity. This theoretical framework articulates five main claims. First, although interesting, the concept of moral panic applies only to a limited range of insecurity episodes. Second, citizens of contemporary societies exhibit acute risk awareness and, when new collective threats emerge, the logic of “organized irresponsibility” often leads citizens and interest groups alike to blame elected officials. Third, political actors mobilize credit claiming and blame avoidance strategies to respond to these threats in a way that enhances their position within the political field. Fourth, powerful interests and institutional forces as well as the “threat infrastructure” specific to a policy area create constraints and opportunities for these strategic actors. Finally, their behavior is proactive or reactive, as political actors can either help push a threat onto the agenda early, or, at a later stage, simply attempt to shape the perception of this threat after other forces have transformed it into a major political issue. -

I noticed how much impact persuasive methods have on the young generation of consumers through social media and digital marketing. This was illustrated through the various sources on social media such as influencers, bloggers, celebrities, social media outlets and much more. This thesis sought to determine if these persuasive techniques that brands use to market their products to younger generations are increasing the amount of purchases these consumers make or influence their decisions to purchase beauty products. A survey was conducted through Qualtrics and distributed to the target market, comprised of the Millennial Generation and Generation Z between the ages of 18-40 years old to determine how much of an impact these persuasive methods conducted by the beauty industry has on them overall; as well as to gather demographic information. Results showed that although these methods have a strong impact on the purchasing decisions of young consumers on beauty products many still rely on word of mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members. -

The Effects of Naming and Shaming on Public Support for Compliance with International Agreements: An Experimental Analysis of the Paris Agreement1 Research Note Dustin Tingley, Harvard University Michael Tomz, Stanford University June, 2021 Forthcoming, International Organization How does naming and shaming affect public support for compliance with international agreements? We investigated this question by conducting survey experiments about the Paris Agreement, which relies on social pressure for enforcement. Our experiments, administered to national samples in the United States, produced three sets of findings. First, shaming by foreign countries shifted domestic public opinion in favor of compliance, increasing the political incentive to honor the Paris Agreement. Second, the effects of shaming varied with the behavior of the target. Shaming was more effective against partial compliers than against targets that took no action or honored their obligations completely. Moreover, even partial compliers managed to reduce the effects of shaming through the strategic use of counter-rhetoric. Third, identity moderated responses to shaming. Shaming by allies was not significantly more effective than shaming by non-allies, but Democrats were more receptive to shaming than Republicans. Overall, our experiments expose both the power and the limits of shaming as a strategy for enforcing the Paris Agreement. In this study, the focus is on the perceptions and experiences of victims of bullying. The purpose of this research is to find out—from the adult survivors’ perspective—how victims of bullying have survived and what kinds of coping methods they have used. A qualitative research approach was selected to study this serious phenomenon and to acquire survivors’ perceptions and experiences. The data were collected from open internet forums where people can write anonymously. Altogether, the data consisted of 190 messages written by 142 pseudonyms. The data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Coping methods and strategies were eventually categorized into the following categories: Cognitive, Emotional, Social, Creative, Physiological, and Spiritual coping methods. The perspective researchers took on bullying was fundamentally a phenomenon of bullying at school and was discussed by grounding on the ideas derived from positive psychology. The fundamental question is how to make school a positive institution that would not only prevent bullying but also increase children’s well-being. Roughly said, both disciplines deal with people and their behavior. I think people are interesting. Why do they behave, think and feel the way they do? But also, what causes their beliefs and wishes, how does that evolve around rationality and emotions? And how do we relate to each other, what is the right thing to do in a specific situation? Research in psychology works on the explanation of behavior, looks for possible causes and results of interventions. Psychology can deal with both normal and deviant behavior, and also with moral behavior and emotion. -

1 Helena Saarikoski, 2002 Verbal Bullying and Abuse of Girls in Schools1 In modern society, an essential step for a girl on her way to womanhood is to come to terms with the notion of sexual reputation. Along with the post-modern style, the master narrative of good and bad women has become tentative; girls now wonder about the double standards of morality concerning the reputation of girls and boys and are troubled by the possibility of losing theirs. There are discourses on many cultural levels about the concept of reputation, which I describe and also engage with in this study. The present study on the concept of a girl’s sexual reputation as it exists in the youth culture of today's Finland originated from concepts within Girls’ and Women’s Studies about the essential meaning of reputation in girls’ culture (Hukkila 1992; Lees 1986) and the actuality of the whore /Madonna dichotomy, its new problematisation and its growing importance in Finnish culture during the 1990s (eg. Julkunen 1994; Koivunen s.a.). From 1995 to 1997, I collected young women’s informal stories about their experiences of being named and labelled a whore.2 These experiences occurred in leisure-time peer groups, at home, and particularly at school: the largest amount of material is from the 1 Author’s accepted manuscript, pre-print.
