Bandets ellevte album har fått navnet “Pale Communion” og slippes mandag 25 august i Norge. “Pale Communion” ble produsert av Mikael Åkerfeldt, bandets frontfigur og låtskriver og mikset av Steven Wilson, som tidligere har produsert tre av bandets album samt utgjør andre halvdel av duoen Storm Corrosion sammen med overnevnte Åkerfeldt. Første smakebit fra albumet er låten “Cusp Of Eternity” som nå er tilgjengelig for alle som forhåndsbestiller albumet på iTunes: Forhåndsbestill Pale Communion på iTunes, få singlen Cusp Of Eternity nå. Opeth – Sorceress (56:36, CD, Moderbolaget/Nuclear Blast/Warner, 2016) Old School-Fans, die Opeth auf Growls und Death Metal reduzieren, werden mit dem dritten „Just clean vocals“- Album in Folge erneut Schwierigkeiten haben und also weiterhin nur noch bei Konzerten bedient. Wer aber bereits zwischen „Heritage“ und “ Pale Communion“ eine deutliche Steigerung und Weiterentwicklung wahrgenommen hat und sich vielleicht für die Ausrichtung von Songs wie ‚Faith In Others‘ besonders erwärmen kann, wird diesem Zauber nun komplett verfallen. Obwohl kein wirkliches Konzeptalbum ist bei allem Abwechslungs- und Ideenreichtum doch eine deutliche atmosphärische Geschlossenheit spürbar – sowohl was musikalische wie textliche Themen angeht (vgl. dazu auch den Interview-Link bei den Surftipps unten). „Sorceress“ gelingt der Trick, den Eindruck von kompakter Zusammengehörigkeit, den „Heritage“ vermittelt, mit stärker anhaftenden, ohrwurmigeren Melodien wie bei „Pale Communion“ zu kombinieren. Akustische Gitarren und analoge Keyboardsounds sind nochmals wichtiger geworden – vgl. etwa die Ouvertüre ‚Persephone‘, das Album-Finale ‚Persephone (Slight Return)‘, oder das nach einem heftig zerrenden E-Piano-Intro in Midtempo majestätisch losrockende ‚Sorceress‘. Steven Wilson, 17.07.18, Bonn, Kunst!Rasen Der Prince of PopProg als (teils) übellauniger Bademeister »You look wet!« Was die Galligkeit seiner Ansagen angeht, ist Steven Wilson offensichtlich bei seinem Storm Corrosion-Buddy Mikael Akerfeldt in die Lehre gegangen. Allerdings ohne die Leichtigkeit von dessen Humor kopieren zu können. Apropos Sturm und Unwetter: ein solches hatte sich unbemerkt von wetter.de und Regenradar an den Kunst!Rasen angeschlichen und alle frühzeitig Erschienenen einmal gründlich gebadet. Bis der Regen dann nachließ. Nicht nur der ausnahmsweise mal mit dem Fahrrad entlang des Rheins angereiste Autor war – wie man sagen könnte – wet to the bone, ein anderer Betreuer ließ sich von den kurzzeitig wahrnehmbaren Blitzen und Donner sogar leider komplett in die Flucht schlagen. Allen, die zu bleiben riskiert haben, ward auf Wunsch ein rosa Cape zum Lohn (was ein weiteres Steven- Bonmot provozierte: „I see a lot of Pink –Nick (Beggs)‘ favourite colour!“). REVIEW: Steven Wilson at the Colston Hall By The Bristol Post | Posted: January 27, 2016 By By Michael Scanlan Steven Wilson at the Colston Hall YOU may have thought Prog Rock was dead. It ruled the world in the early 70s when bands like Yes, ELP and King Crimson strode the earth like mighty dinosaurs. Prog seemed to get swept away in the musical upheaval of Punk Rock, but really it just moved sideways into its own little niche. Currently the top dog in that little niche is probably Steven Wilson, who was at the Colston Hall on Tuesday night to show prog still rules for a lot of people. Far from a household name, Wilson is a very big fish in the progressive rock pond, but swims under the radar of mainstream recognition (to mix a metaphor or two). He's sold a shedload of albums, been four times nominated for the Grammy Awards and was crowned "King Of Prog Rock" in the 2015 Progressive Music Awards. He's also in great demand as remix producer of choice for all those top prog band of the 70s as they re-release now classic albums, revitalising recordings by Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and XTC, among others. The influences of Yes, Genesis, Crimson et al were present in Tuesday night's performance but there were plenty of more modern influences and creativity as the music swung from the melodic to hard-hitting – extremely hard-hitting – industrial metal. The first section of the close-to-three-hour concert was devoted to Wilson's latest album Hand.

Opeth – Deliverance & Damnation (Bookset) (61:52, 43:24, „Buchset“ 2CD/2DVD, Music For Nations/Sony, 2015) Jetzt dröhnt und tönt zusammen, was zusammengehört! Wir erinnern uns: Die ungleichen Geschwister „Deliverance“ und „Damnation“ hatten in den Jahren 2002 und 2003 auf Wunsch der ursprünglichen Plattenfirma zwar getrennt das Licht der Plattenläden erblickt, waren aber von Opeth „gemeinsam“ konzipiert, von Mikael Åkerfeldt geschrieben und – mit Steven Wilson als Co-Produzent sowie Hintergrundgesang, Mellotron u. a. Keyboards – auch eingespielt worden. Mikael hatte zunächst ausdrücklich ein Doppelalbum im Sinn gehabt. Beide Alben sind denn auch seiner Großmutter gewidmet, die während der Aufnahmen bei einem Autounfall starb. Im Jahr des 25-jährigen Bestehens der Band veröffentlicht Music For Nations nun beide Alben als wiedervereinigtes Werk in zwei leckeren Konfigurationen. Zur Besprechung liegt uns das bildschöne 4-Disc-Buchset mit neuem Stereomix und zusätzlichen 5.1 Mixen vor. Der 5.1 Surround-Mix für „Damnation“ wurde von Steven Wilson besorgt, der von „Deliverance“ seitens Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief, Katatonia, Wisdom Of Crowds). Mikael dazu: „Es war pure Spannung, als ich mir die einzelnen Tracks angehört und sie wiederentdeckt habe. Besonders beeindruckt bin ich vom Sound der Drums von Martin Lopez, und gleichzeitig total baff, wie abgefahren und außergewöhnlich das Album ist.“ Man sieht schon – es gibt also auch Liner Notes vom Opeth-Boss Mikael. Und von Jerry Ewing vom Prog Magazin (der den Einfluss von Katatonias Jonas Renske betont). Und es gibt ein von Travis Smith für das Buch nochmals geschmackvoll-düster überarbeitetes Artwork!
