Hoher Markt 5 Kärntnerstrasse 16 Kärntnerstraße 12 5 After his son Ludwig joined the company, E. Bakalowits & Sons grew and became one of the foremost crystal chandelier manufacturers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1892 Ludwig Bakalowits received the order to manufacture the chandeliers for the Neue Hofburg Palace in Vienna for Emperor Franz Joseph I and was appointed Imperial and Royal Purveyor to the Court. 6 1885 the company was exporting its products to America and Asia. In 1900, Bakalowits & Sons displayed their crystal chandeliers at the World Exposition in Paris. Other exhibitions in St. Petersburg, London, Geneva and Turin followed. 7 In 1955 Bakalowits was entrusted with the manufacture of new lighting fixtures for some of the Viennese buildings that had suffered damage during the Second World War. These included the Parliament, the State Opera House, the National Theatre, City Hall, St. Stephan’s Cathedral, and others. 8 Recognizing the increasing demand for luxury products in Asia and the Middle East in the 1960’s, Bakalowits extended its business to those regions through close cooperation with international architects and designers.

Produced by the hand of a skilled master The creation of the Pen of the Year demands the highest standards of craftsmanship. For the latest edition, we were able to commission the Herbert Stephan gemstone manufactory. It carries on the great tradition of the Idar Oberstein gemstone workshop which dates back to the 15th century and is still of world renown. The manufactory's masters impressively demonstrated their unparalleled skill with this year's Pen of the Year: Its platinum-plated barrel and cap are adorned by four green Silesian serpentines and a Russian smoky quartz – both ground and polished by hand. The special edition combines 24-carat gold plating with green serpentine and rare chrysoprase, Frederick's favourite natural stone. Chrysoprase has not been mined for many years and is only available on the antique stone market. The special edition is limited to 150 fountain pens and 30 rollerball pens. The platinum plated fountain pen is limited to 1,000 units, the rollerball pen to 300 units. Each writing instrument is individually numbered and comes in a highly polished, deep-black wooden case. It includes a certificate personally signed by the manufacturer Herbert Stephan attesting to the authenticity of the natural stones.

We continue to the square Bassinplatz. The weekly market as well as the St Peter approx. 2 h (or 4,5 h) and Paul Church are well worth a visit. The brick red of the Dutch approx. 4,5 km (or 9 km) Quarter shines here from afar. Frederick William I, the soldier Potsdam Hauptbahnhof king, wanted to bring Dutch craftsmen to Potsdam with this special architecture. By Marcus van der Meulen. In this presentation sacred architecture in rebuilding war damaged cities during the the period 1945-1975 is discussed, starting with a short look at the postwar reconstruction of Minsk and Magdeburg as socialist cities, followed by a look at East Berlin and Warsaw. This presentation is an adapted version of the paper presented at the conference State (Re)construction in Art in Central and Eastern Europe 1918-2018 in Warsaw 2018. We will look at the first three decades of rebuilding the nation after the end of the Second World War. 1975 was a pivotal year. It was the European Architectural Heritage Year, shifting the heritage values regarding religious buildings from the traditional religious connotations towards the important values of education and economy, including tourism, and the year the German Democratic Republic adopted the Denkmalschutz Gesetz in the DDR, heralding a change, a growing awareness of the significance of historic buildings including sacred architecture. Introduction. At the end of the Second World War in May 1945 two capitals were in ruins. The war had destroyed much of Europe. Cities and towns had been bombed or damaged in combat. Some buildings were even calculatedly dynamited and burned down. As the Nazis retreated historic buildings, in my home country especially the church towers, were targeted and detonated. Severe combat damaged the German capital until the final days of the war.
