We will have more information on this experience during our April meeting, and will express thanks to the several people who provided leadership and willing hands for this important event. Contents 1 Our Show & Sale provides great opportunities for our members to sell their plants and display Pres. Message 1 their exceptional specimens. Board Minutes 2 This activity also enables our society to serve the growing number of succulent gardeners and April Program 3 raise funds to support services to members throughout the year. April Mini-Show 4 You have undoubtedly noticed that this issue of On the Dry Side is both later than usual and March Mini-Show 5 different in appearance. Also, due to technical issues, this issue does not include March Mini- CSSA Show & Sale 6 show Winners. These changes have resulted from the hassle of working with a recent update of computer software. Microsoft Office 365 appears to provide many desirable new capabilities, Open Greenhouse 7 and definitely requires time on the learning curve. Show Winners 8 Our April meeting will feature Stan Verkler’s talk about his recent visit to South Africa. Spring Sale Pics 9 This will be another interesting and informative presentation that adds substantial value to our Officers, Chairs 10 monthly meetings, along with the enjoyment of getting together with friends and growers of succulent plants. -

In the past we have donated funds to the CSSA (2014 Convention), CGCI Thanks to those who helped in February: (Anza‐Borrego renovation project), and the SCBG (more tables). Héctor M. Hernández*, Carlos Gómez-Hinostrosa and Gibrán Hoffmann Departamento de Botánica, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Apartado postal 70-233, 04510 Mexico D. F., Mexico. *Correspondent: [email protected] Abstract. With the aim of assessing the extent of geographical rarity of Mexican Cactaceae, we calculated the distribution size (area of occupancy) of 142 species from the Chihuahuan Desert. In addition, using 2 variables (number of localities and range size), we preliminarily assessed their conservation status using the current IUCN Red List criteria. The results showed enormous variation in the areas of occupancy, although from the biogeographic and conservation perspective the most exceptional group comprises the extremely narrow endemics (42 species), whose range is restricted to areas smaller than 10 km2. Our results reinforce the reputation of this plant family as exceptionally rare geographically. We suggest that geographical rarity of Cactaceae in the Chihuahuan Desert is a natural phenomenon; however, we propose that the range of several species has been infl uenced by human activities. Regarding the conservation status of the species, 75 of them are categorized as Least concern. The remaining 67 species (47.2%) fall in 1 of the 3 categories of threat (27 Vulnerable, 11 Endangered, and 29 Critically endangered). These fi gures confi rm the critical conservation status of Mexican Cactaceae. -

Dave Palzkill: Biography I was raised on a mixed beef/hog/chicken farm in the hill country of southwest Wisconsin near the former mining town of Mineral Point. I majored in Horticulture and Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. During my graduate studies I also spent eight months at the University of California - Davis, a time which awakened my interest in the dry west. My dissertation research at Madison focused on the influence of environment on Ca-transport and Ca-related disorders of vegetable crops. I taught Horticulture and Agronomy courses at the University of Arizona for 14 years and conducted research on new/alternative crops for dry regions; primarily jojoba, but also low water-requiring landscape/ornamental plants and mesquite for energy production. Since 1990, I have worked as a consultant on new crops projects (jojoba, chia, lesquerella, mesquite, moringa) in several countries. For the past 15 years, I have also managed a nursery in northwest Tucson specializing in Adenium, but also including lots of Pedilanthus (Lady's Slipper) and miscellaneous cacti., especially small-padded/jointed Opuntioids, which I first fell in love with on travels in various South American countries. -

Apartado postal 63 91000 Xalapa, Veracruz RESUMEN Se presenta un listado revisado de algunas especies de plantas mexicanas silvestres consideradas como raras, amenazadas o en peligro de extinción, desglosadas por categoría UICN, tipo de vegetación y entidad federativa (estado); también por primera vez se incluye una relación de hongos amenazados. Se discute el papel de los jardines botánicos en la conservación de las mismas. Se realiza además un análisis numérico de las especies registradas por familia, categoría UICN y vegetación. ABSTRACT A revised list of some rare, threatened and endangered plant species of Mexico is presented. Listing is by IUCN category, vegetation type and state. A list of threatened fungi is included for the first time. The role of the botanic gardens in the conservation of these species is discussed. A numerical analysis of the reported species by family, IUCN category and vegetation is also presented. INTRODUCCION El primer listado de especies de plantas amenazadas para México (Vovides, 1981) así como la versión actualizada de la misma (Vovides, 1988) se compilaron por medio de encuestas enviadas a los taxónomos colaboradores. Las categorías de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) (Anónimo, 1981) fueron asignadas subjetivamente según el criterio de los expertos, como una primera aproximación para evaluar la problemática de las especies en peligro. Estos listados son útiles tanto para los jardines botánicos como para las autoridades involucradas en la toma de decisiones para protegerlas. -
