Signature ………………………………… UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX Adam Fishwick, DPhil in International Relations INDUSTRIALISATION AND THE WORKING CLASS: THE CONTESTED TRAJECTORIES OF ISI IN CHILE AND ARGENTINA SUMMARY Research on import-substitution industrialisation (ISI) in Latin America continues to portray it as an aberration of state-led development inevitably condemned to failure and held up as an example of the mistakes scholars and policymakers must avoid. In this thesis, however, I show that this misunderstanding of a “model” that lasted several decades and brought gains to a wide array of socioeconomic actors is due to an inability of leading approaches – those that focus on institutions, ideas, and class – to understand the role of labour.

Resumen: En Argentina, a partir de 1976, el sistema industrial y productivo del país sufrió fuertes transformaciones a partir de la implementación del paradigma neoliberal imperante a nivel internacional. Este cambio estructural, implementado de forma gradual, alteró también -conjuntamente a las relaciones de producción- la dinámica social, laboral, educacional e institucional del país, imprimiendo una lógica capitalista a todo el accionar humano. Como parte de ello se dio en este periodo el proceso de concesiones, privatización y cierre de la mayoría de los ramales ferroviarios que poseía el país, modificando hasta nuestros días la concepción de transporte y perjudicando seriamente al colectivo nacional. De las graves consecuencias que esto produjo trata este trabajo. Ponencia: 1.0 Golpe de Estado de 1976. In 2006, the first autochthonous case of human urban visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recorded in Misiones in the presence of the vector, along with some canine VL cases. After this first case, the vector began to spread primarily in northeast Argentina. Between 2008-2011, three human VL cases were reported in Salta province, but the presence of Lu. lon- gipalpis was not recorded. Captures of Phlebotominae were made in Tartagal, Salta, in 2013, and the presence of Lu. longipalpis was first recorded in northwest Argentina at that time. Systematic sampling is recommended to observe the distribution and dispersion patterns of Lu. longipalpis and consider the risk of VL transmission in the region.
